How I work with her:Roma has been deaf since birth, but that doesn't stop her from being a great competitor! Unfortunately it makes her a little more nervous then other horses but what she lacks in confidence she makes up for in sheer talent and will power. Roma has learned how to be a Western Pleasure show horse by being tapped in her shoulder while her owner is next to her. On tap means walk, two means trot, three canter, and 4 gallop, but that's hardly used unless they want to watch her gallop across her pasture. An open palm on her shoulder means go, and a closed fist on her shoulder means speed up a bit without breaking pace. And even though she cant hear a thing, she always seems to know when I'm coming down to her stall to feed her, she sticks her head out and gives a loud whinny (the only time she really makes a sound), curious hmmm? Sneaky horsey :)

This mare is actually a bit special to me being a pinto and being deaf. I recently lost hearin in my left ear due to a car wreck about a year ago and it ended up destroying the inner ear bones in my ear. Because of this, I have to wear a hearing aid to hear my music that I play. (I'm a musician) because of this, to communicate with this lovely mare, I would use American Sign Language (which I know and have taught deaf dogs with). I would teach her specific signs along with showing her, which she would be rewarded when she did what I asked. This method is used with deaf dogs and deaf horses and has had great success so far. She is an intelligent mare and I know that with patience, she will be a great competitor. When she has a rider, the rider would be trained with her to know which specific movements or touches in the saddle meant what. Just because one is deaf does not mean one cannot do the unexpected. She may not be able to hear my voice, but that doesn't stop her in the ring.

Call name: Annie
Gender: Mare
Age: 2 Years

Breed: Gypsy Vanner
Discipline:Dressage
Breeding fee: 2000c

~Annie & Criminal~

Miss Annie is hardly affected by her loss of hearing! Seeing as in dressage it is mainly only leg, seat and hand commands, and rarely voical commands, this Gypsy mare can still compete and excell without difficulty. Annie also has little trouble communicating with her paddock pal and best friend (so we think) BH Snowy's Partner In Crime, seeing as horses mainly communicate through body language. Criminal has also helped her become less nervous. She's still nervous, just not quite as bad. He will be trained alongside her as an example for Annie, in case she is ever confused. Despite her disability, this little Pistol-Annie has been held back very little in her training so far, and looks to have a bright, triumphant future in store!

herro der mes amis, i am believe. proud canadian, ottb loving, colt breaking, nfr dreaming. pictured on the left is my racetrack reject, landofmakebelieve, aka molly, moo, shmoo, whatever name comes to mind x] molly is a 10 year old canadian bred thoroughbred mare, and standing at about 16.2hh, we look a little wonky when we chase cans, but la dee da that's alright. molly and i tried several disciplines. i tried desperately to get her to catch on to dressage, but unfortunately, she still has the race bred mind and is all go. however, together we found a discipline which we could both enjoy; western gaming. this summer we started travelling to barrel races locally. our current record on a standard size pattern is 17.314 and we are improving with every run. and to all the low budget barrel racers out there such as myself, a word of advise; chin up darling. you may not have a million dollar mount under your butt, but you and your crossbred, rejected, hard headed, rescue baby can do it. you know why? cause those girls sitting in their custom circle y's, upon shiny, top of the line mounts are full of themselves. they think there's no way they can lose. they get cocky. stay humble, believe in yourself, in your horse, and most importantly ride your little heart out.

The wild beacons a horse to be in complete top of the line health. Including its eye sight, hearing, ability to eat as well as it ability to run. Tegan would never be able to survive in the wild. But Luckily for her, she has a loving home with Claire. The training Claire would undergo with Tegan would be simple, yet exactly what this stunning Gypsy mare would need. Using the basics of body language to help the mare determine right from wrong and to help her understand concepts that are unfamiliar to her. She would be taught through Claires knowledge of horsemanship and also trick training and liberty. This helps ensure the mare is working at her own will and with Claire, not against her. The trick training would be basic and taught with a dressage whip, including a reward to show the mare is going in the right direction or doing the correct thing. Liberty would bond Claire and Tegan to a partnership where Tegan trusts her riders commands even though she cannot hear. The soothing and gentle touch of her rider is a calming and rewarding gesture to the mare, and Claire understands this. Tegan would understand the horsemanship training, as it is to the mares needs and requirements. Teaching the mare to trust, be loyal and creates a defined relationship between horse and rider. Tegan would get the full benefit of Claire's slow approach to her training before taking her to her first three day eventing competition where she would eventually soar over fences with confidence.

When working with a deaf mare, I make sure they can understand my body language, using natural horsemanship and trust, Angel has been deaf since birth and has had lots of time put into her, learning every movement you make.

Samuel Roberts wrote:The first step with any unusual horse is research. I mean, there were obvious things; making sure she can see you approaching being the main one of course. But the research really showed us what to do. From there, it was just a case of trying techniques and seeing what worked.

For Vienna, we always start training in the same way. We head out into the pasture, and move around the outside of it until we get to the fence she's facing. Then I climb up to sit on the top of it, making my movements slow and deliberate. When she notices I'm there, either she comes over to me or I slip off the fence and approach her. From then, getting the tack on and such, it's much the same as with any other horse. I talk to her; I know she can't hear me, but a lot of the research said it was best to talk anyway, and really I can't help but witter on. I keep a hand on her at all times, just so she always knows where I am, as I slip her tack on.

In all honesty, training her with the cart has been slightly easier than it normally is; there's no sound of the cart behind her to freak her out. Still, what with her being overly spooked by seeing anything that she's not expecting, we've had to start her off with Levi walking by her side, a hand on her shoulder, just so she's reassured it's alright. And so she doesn't wrench my arms out of their sockets by suddenly bolting when I'm on the long rein with her. When it comes to actual commands, I tend to find she's more responsive than most. Smaller actions are required for the same effect. The tiniest flick or tug of the rein will get her to do what you want, where a normal movement will get a wild over-reaction. It's quite nice, really. I mean, I couldn't drive her with another horse, they'd respond differently and the movements would be off, but with her on her own we've found it works just fine. You've just go to make sure you're calm and relaxed and don't do anything drastic, and she's a good worker.
