I was young, just a filly. Barely trained, but I was friendly and trusting. A little too trusting. My owner, a young girl, was on my back. It was strange, but I accepted it. My momma always told me it would get better. My owner was a nice girl who always brought me treats, tasty peppermint ones. We were in the forest today, a peaceful place with beautiful trees, calming skies, cooling winds. I wasn't spooked by anything; I had been here before, many times. She sat very still out of my field of view, trying not to disturb me. Smart girl. If she got dumped, she'd be wolf lunch. Of course, I would never dare hurt her, but when a horse is scared there's no going back. Anyway, we had just turned around the corner and into a beautiful meadow. Across the meadow was a cliff that led down to a lake, and across it was a dam. The dam had a safe space to cross above it, and the girl turned me towards it. Without hesitation, I stepped onto it. We had nearly crossed when my back legs slipped. I couldn't find my footing, and went sliding, sliding towards the edge, where a sharp, rocky demise awaited us. I could feel her tense on my back, grasping at the saddle...

I tried. I really, really tried. But I couldn't find a foothold. We fell. Down, down far, the wind whipping past. Vague noises sounded around me, the sound of a scream. A child's scream. I couldn't react, though. My brain was numb. I couldn't feel a thing. The last thing I saw was her blue eyes, staring into mine, tearful. Then everything went black.

I didn't believe I ever actually woke up. I was physically conscious... but I could see nothing. Just darkness. I could feel again, but extreme pain seemed to shoot through every nerve in my body; it hurt. It really, really hurt. So I just lay there, next to the water. It was cool, almost calming- but it carried the scent of death. I could feel her next to me, but limp and cold. So, so cold. I couldn't smell anything but blood. It was over. All over. She was gone. It was dark. It seemed like the Sun would never shine for me again.

It was much later when the loud machine arrived. It descended from the sky, but I was too pained and tired to react. A human, female, stepped close to me. I could hear her whispering, but I couldn't see her. She lay a hand on my scarred cheek and whispered, ''Everything's going to be alright.'' I realized then that it was. The past was in the past. As my eyelids grew heavy and the already dark world seemed to fall away, I knew it would be nothing but a memory. A scarring memory, but a memory none the less. It was time to move on.

OMG I'm seriously crying right now. I feel so horrible. :'''( But I do think Rhea is a wonderful name for her, don't you?

Hopefully my first!!!! But I'm still crying...
