Why The Sun Chases the Moon
(A Filipino Myth)

There were two gods. One was Buan, the moon goddess, and the other was Arao, the sun god.
One day, Buan was worried for her children. Her silvery white stars were small and weak, compared to Arao's.
Buan's stars were constantly bullied and taunted by Arao's stronger children.
She made a pact with Arao. For their own protection, they would both destroy their stars. Buan argued that there was the threat that their children might someday start a war against each other, and this would prevent any bloodshed from happening.
Arao agreed. He devoured every one of his children.
But Buan didn't. Instead of keeping her promise, she hid her children in the safety of the clouds, away from Arao's sight.
When Arao found out about Buan's treachery, he was furious.
He wanted vengeance, so he began chasing her, as he has been doing ever since.
Buan evaded him, hiding in the clouds with her stars during the day. When night falls, Tala, the morning and evening star and Buan's eldest daughter, would give a signal to her mother and the rest of her siblings to let them know that it was safe to come out, only to hide again once the sun rises.
The cycle has been going on for eons.
Occasionally Arao gets close enough to bite Buan, and that's when an eclipse happens.
But the moon always recovers, and the chase continues.

Myth background: [from Hinduism, Vishnu and Brahma are two gods.] Once while Vishnu and Brahma were quarrelling about which of them was superior to the other, Shiva, in the form of a column of light, appeared beside them. The column seemed to have no beginning or end, stretching upwards and downwards as far as the eye could see. The two gods decided that whoever found the top or the bottom of the column first would be deemed to be superior to the other.

So they set out, Vishnu in the form of a boar, and Brahma in the form of a swan. Vishnu descended for aeons together, but could not find the base of the column, and finally gave up the search. Brahma, soaring upwards, was equally unsuccessful in reaching the top. He saw a ketaki flower wafting down, and catching it, returned to the starting point where Vishnu was waiting for him.

Then followed a spot of duplicity. Brahma, claiming success, waved the flower, which he said he had found at the summit, in Vishnu’s face. Vishnu doubted his claim. He asked the ketaki if what Brahma said was true. The flower said it was.

The barefaced lie infuriated Shiva, and he cursed the flower (another version says the flower refused to substantiate Brahma’s claim and that it was Brahma who cursed it). The ketaki, till then considered the best among flowers, lost its importance and was never again offered in worship except on Mahashivratri when it makes a shy appearance.

Perseus was the son of Danae and is famous for beheading Medusa. Using her head, he saved Andromeda from being punished because of her vain mother. As Andromeda says to Perseus," She boasted that I was more beautiful than the Nereids. Poseidon was angered and said that I must be sacrificed to a sea monster", as a monster rose from the sea. Perseus pulled Medusa's head out of the bag; the sea monster turned to stone and crumbled to pieces. Perseus cut Andromeda's chains and took her to her father, King Cepheus of Phoenicia. When Perseus asked Andromeda's hand in marriage, Cepheus gladly agreed. After many years living happily with his wife, Perseus was killed by Dionysus. To be immortalized, Perseus and Andromeda were turned into stars and would live together in the sky.

Myth background: Most everyone knows about Prometheus, but there is more to the story then meets the eye. Prometheus was a titan who sided during the war with Zeus, which saved his bacon when Zeus won and all the other titans were tossed into Tartarus forever. Prometheus pretty much after that became the protector of mankind, first with his Trick at Mecone. He gave Zeus a choice between two things, an ox with beef hidden in its stomach or bones hidden in beautiful wrappings. Of course Zeus went for beauty and finds out he gets these terrible bones, but by accepting the bones it allowed the Humans to sacrifice bones instead of beef (humans got to eat that now!). Zeus being Zeus of course got all angry at mankind and decided to hide fire from them! Prometheus, loving humans like he does, goes behind Zeus's back and steals fire and gives it back to the humans. Zeus of course is again furious so he goes and gets Hephaestus to create Pandora and gives her the box to bring on all kinds of bad stuffs to the humans. Then he goes and chains Prometheus to a rock where his liver will be eaten out by an eagle by day, regrown by night, then repeated for eternity. No worries though, Chiron and Herc saved his butt later on from his punishment.

For the Celts, who lived in central Europe, Lugh was a Sun god. The underworld god Balor was his grandfather. Balor was the leader of the Fomorii. The Fomorii were evil people that lived in the underworld.
According to a prophecy, Balor was to be killed by a grandson. To prevent the happening of the prophecy, Balor tried to kill his grandson, but Lugh miraculously survived. Lugh was secretly raised by the god of the sea ,Manannan, and became an expert warrior.

When he reached manhood, he joined the peoples of the goddess Dana, named the Tuatha De Danaan, to help them in their struggle against the Fomorii and Balor. Balor had an evil eye capable of killing whomever looked at it. Lugh threw a magic stone ball into Balor's eye, and killed Balor.

Lugh corresponds to the Welsh god Lleu and the Gallic Lugos. From Lugh's name derives the names of modern cities such as Lyon, Laon and Leyden. Today, people remember the figure of Lugh with a festival which commemorates the beginning of the harvest in August.

Myth background:
Since his mother is Loki, and Sleipnir is the offspring of Loki, I thought this story was appropriate! Though It's a little weird, I love this story! The origin of Sleipnir:

A certain smith arrived at Asgard one day and offered to build the gods a high wall around their home to protect them from any who might wish them ill. The smith (certainly a giant himself) said he could complete his work in a mere three seasons, but demanded a steep compensation: the hand of the goddess Freya in marriage, as well as the sun and moon.

The gods took counsel together. Freya was adamantly against the giant’s terms from the start. But Loki suggested that the builder should obtain that which he desired, although only if he could complete his work in a single winter, with no aid from anyone but his horse. After much deliberation, the gods consented to Loki’s plan. Of course, the gods had no intention of actually giving Freya away, nor the sun or the moon; they thought that the task they demanded was impossible.

The giant smith, however, agreed to their terms, provided that the gods swear oaths to ensure that, if their conditions were met, they would fulfill their end of the bargain, and that he himself would be safe in Asgard while he worked.

The builder set about constructing the wall, and the gods marvelled at how quickly the structure was raised. What was even more perplexing to them was that the giant’s stallion, Svadilfari (“Unlucky Traveler”) seemed to be doing almost twice as much work as the smith himself, hauling enormous boulders over considerable distances to add to the edifice. When the end of winter was only three days ahead, the wall was strong enough to be impenetrable by almost any enemy, and – alarmingly – lacking little before it was finished. Only the stones around the gate had yet to be put in place.

The anxious gods seized Loki and rebuked him for giving them such foul advice. They threatened him with death if he couldn't find a way to prevent the giant from finishing his task and making off with their beloved goddess Freya and the sun and moon, bringing never-ending darkness and dreariness to the Nine Worlds. Loki pleaded with the gods to spare his life, and swore an oath that he would do as the gods desired, come what may.

That night, the giant and Svadilfari ventured into the snow-draped forest in search of stones. Along their way, a mare, who was none other than Loki in disguise, whinnied to the stallion from a short distance away. When the stallion saw the mare and he snapped his reins and bounded into the woods after her. The mare ran all night, and all night Svadilfari chased after her. When morning came, the giant’s horse was still missing, and the now-despairing giant knew that there was no way that he could now finish the wall in time.

The Aesir then paid the giant the wages they deemed he deserved: a fatal blow from Thor’s hammer, which shattered his head into pieces no bigger than breadcrumbs.

Meanwhile, deep in the forest, Svadilfari had caught up with Loki, who soon gave birth to an eight-legged horse – Sleipnir, who became the steed of Odin.

Myth background: A horse of the sun in Norse mythology that with Alsvid, the other horse pulled the chariot across the sky. His name means 'Early Awake'. Aarvak is one of the horses that pulls Sol's chariot. He pulls the chariot during the night, and brings frost and cold with him. It is said that the morning dew is the sweat and froth coming off of Aarvak when he stops his journey at dawn. He is often mentioned in descriptions of the sun.

Myth background: The poem Thrymskvitha tells the tale of how Thor had to dress in a wedding dress to get his hammer, Mjölnir, back after it was stolen. Thor and Loki found out that Mjölnir had been stolen by Thrymr the giant. Thrymr said that he would only give Mjölnir back if he can marry Freyja. When Thor and Loki ask Freyja to help them, she goes against their plan and refuses. Thor must dress up as Freyja in a wedding dress to trick Thrymr and get Mjölnir back. Loki joins Thor in the charade by posing as a handmaid. Thor deceives Thrymr long enough for the giant to bring out Mjölnir to use in the wedding ceremony. After Thrymr lays Mjölnir on "Freyja's" lap, Thor proceeds to slaughter all giants in attendance wearing "a wedding dress and fabulous jewels."

This is a Maori myth!
( the mother is the earth god, and the father is the sky god. tawhirimatea is the weather god )

Tāwhirimātea lived between the embrace of Ranginui ( Mother ) and Papatūānuku ( Father ) as did the other children of his village. He liked living close to his parents. He could talk to his mother, and get advice from his father when he needed to. Tāwhirimātea didn't mind the difficulties of living in continual darkness, or that space was so confined that he and the rest of his siblings had to crawl to get around. But the other children had had enough.

A meeting was called and the majority of the children decided that their parents had to be separated.
Tūmātauenga addressed them, "Once they feel the blows of my patu they will soon loosen their grip and we'll finally be free to walk upright and greet Tamanuiterā, the sun."
Tāwhirimātea disagreed."How dare you! How dare you think of hurting our parents in such a way. They fed you, nurtured and raised you, and now you reward them with this?"
The children bowed their heads in shame, but Tūmatauenga stood his ground.
"We have asked them to separate, we have pleaded with them to let us see the light, but do they listen? No, this is the only way!"
Tūmātauenga raised his patu to strike at his parents but Tāwhirimātea was on him in a flash. Grappling in the dark they struggled, until finally Tāne Mahuta pleaded for quiet.
"Stop! Fighting will not resolve our problem, we have agreed that we cannot continue to live this way. I'm sorry Tāwhiri but separating our parents has been agreed upon by the majority of us. With the gentle push of my arms, and without hurting them, I will push our parents apart."
The others agreed, but Tāwhirimātea refused to support what he didn't believe was right. Firstly Tāne Mahuta braced his legs on Papatūānuku and pushed Ranginui with his arms. He used all his strength, but without success.
"You cannot separate them," said Tāwhirimātea. "Give it up, they are meant to be together!"
But Tāne Mahuta wasn't finished. He lay on his back, pulled his legs to his chest then pushed from below. Slowly he pushed, but still nothing happened. Again he pushed, using all his strength, but nothing happened. He took a breath and pushed once more. Releasing his breath, and taking another, he pushed again, a new surge of strength pumping through his body. And at last there was movement.
Tāwhirimātea roared with fury, "No!"
But it was too late. Ranginui and Papatūānuku were forced apart, and light filled the world. The brothers lay in shocked silence covering their eyes from the brightness of Tamanuiterā shining down on their cowering bodies.
Tāwhirimātea was first to jump to his feet, lashing out at the others in anger. "I will never let you rest for what you have done, even your children won't be safe from my clutches! This will be my domain forever and you will always feel my wrath," he called to the other children, and he flew up to join his father.
As time passed animals, plants and people grew in the light of the sun. The mokopuna of Ranginui and Papatūānuku populated the world.
Tāwhirimātea kept his promise living in the realm of his father, the sky. He became the guardian of the winds, Ngā hau e whā, and continues to be so to this day.
Sometimes Tāwhirimātea is content to listen to advice from his parents and forgive his siblings. On those days the weather is fine, clear and calm. But sometimes he is reminded of the pain his parents endured when they were separated, and the longing they still have for each other. On those days he sends tornadoes, hurricanes, and cyclones to hound the descendants of those that betrayed him.

Myth background: Be warned: this story is beautiful but tragic. It begins with Orpheus, the best musician that ever lived. One strum of his lyre, one note sung, and beasts would crawl to him, rocks would shift their moss to move to be closer, trees would tear their roots to be closer to him. He had more power than a mortal man ought to for he was the son of the Muse Calliope.

He lived his life simply and carelessly until the day he met Eurydice. She was a Dryad, and when they fell in love it meant everything to them. But the rustic god Aristaeus saw Eurydice's beauty and desired it, and did not care that she was unwilling and in love with another. She ran from him in terror, without thought to her step, and so it was she stepped on a poisonous snake in her flight. The venom of its bite killed her at once and her spirit went to the Underworld. Orpheus was inconsolable. His grief was bitter, but he did not let it lull him into a stupor, he decided to take action.

With his lyre, Orpheus descended into the Underworld. A normal mortal would have perished any number of times, but Orpheus had his lyre and his voice and he charmed Cerberus - the three-headed monster dog of Hades who guarded the Underworld - into letting him pass. Facing Hades and his cold Queen Persephone he played for them his sorrow at the loss of his love. The heart that was frozen by Hades' abduction melted in Persphone's breast and a tear rolled down her cheek. Even Hades could not help weeping. They let Orpheus through to Eurydice, but warned him very carefully: Eurydice would follow him into the light of the world and once she entered the sunlight she would be changed from a shade back to a woman. But if Orpheus doubted, if he looked back to see her, she would be lost to him forever.

Orpheus heard and rejoiced. He turned and left the dark hall of Hades and began his ascent back to life. As he walked he rejoiced that his wife would soon be with him again. He listened closely for her footfall behind him, but a shade makes no noise. The closer to the light he got, the more he began to believe that Hades had tricked him to get him out of the Underworld, that Eurydice was not behind him. Only feet away from the light Orpheus lost faith and turned around. He saw Eurydice, but only for a moment as her shade was whisked back down among the other dead souls. She was gone.

Orpheus tried again to enter the Underworld and demand her return, but one cannot enter twice the same way - and no other way was open to him. All that was left to him was death. Here the story changes. There are different stories of his death. Some say he played so mournfully that his songs called for death, and that the animals who surrounded him tore him apart, weeping as they did. Some say it was Maenads in a frenzy who ripped the singer to shreds. Some say he was struck down by Zeus for disclosing mysteries that were meant to be kept sacred. Either way, he was torn apart, and much of him was thrown to the winds. But the Muses mourned the death of their son and prodigy, and saved his head to sing forever.
