how did she get her scars? The lovely young mare was outside grazing, the final vestiges of after noon light giving way to evening filtering through green leaves. She looked to the sky, and now it was that warm color that gets on a summer evening as fine as this. Said young mare perked her ears as she thought she heard a sound, but shrugged it off as she moved to a different area of the pasture to feed. She hoped the pretty young odd-looking creature with the wonderful scented long curled red mane would bring her in soon, she enjoyed spending time with her. Hearing the sound again, she now raised her head and watched a young Quarter horse with foal getting nervous. This mare was pregnant with her first, and was stressed enough without all the sounds of evening. Where was Little Red, as she had dubbed her? Shaking her mane, she watched the mare whom was in a smaller enclosure some of those strange creatures called a paddock. She looked to the wooden fence on three sides of it, the furthest facing the forest...Then squealed and reared as some dark shape, no two, three...as three dark shapes came from the forest...
The mare reared as she realized what they were. They were coyotes, and starved looking ones too...Shaking her head and pawing the air, she screamed a warning, a challenge. The 'mutts' paid her no mind, jumping the fence as it was no higher then five or six feet, and going straight for Anya. Shrieking, the Quarter mare tried to fight back, and then the Grullo Tolter leaped the fence and ran, leaping the paddock fence and breathing heavily as she stood a moment. She screamed as she ran at the coyotes, and the biggest a male jumped and caught her rump and lower are of her back just above her rump. A second one caught her near her foreleg and she almost fell. She kicked and fought, driving them off, but the Quarter mare had perished...Neighbors, hearing the shrieks, thought that the human and her mate had abused the Tolter and that their dogs had been set on her and the Quarter, and took them away to the Shelter.
Weeks later, she was with a man whom seemed nice, but turned out he was just like those coyotes...He tried to use the mare as a broodmare and even a runner, and when she would not run he zapped her with a small device some jockeys would use, and whipped her on the neck because she would not stand for the stallions. She kicked and reared, and the scars faded with time but are still there.
