A young girl lived
In a small town fair.
She went to a big city,
And brought the town to its knees.

name: Elmira
Elmira, New York. A small industrial city.
Just before Elmira was born, her parents went to Elmira for a small trip. Though it isn't exactly considered modern in our sense, to them, it was the most modern place in the world. It was so much different than what they considered home.

gender: Female
------
ImageImage
backstory:
Elmira grew up in a town that was just far away enough from any other city to escape the fast-paced growth of population, industry, and technology. Almost no one left the town, and no one felt a strong urge to leave unless it was for education or a better job, or maybe they were sick of the rural-suburban lifestyle and wanted to go to the fast-paced cities. Anyhow, that town was a town of where fairytales came to life; you could just imagine elves peeking out from behind rocks, or fairies coming out of the few flowers that bloomed each year in the snowy weather. Everyone knew everyone and everything in it. There were no tourists. It was like the town was a secret itself, buried under all the snowfall.
There was a myth about the Kiamaras living here. They all were part-Yeti. No one believed the Yeti myth except for a few elders. Whenever someone doubted them, they would point at a young Kia trying to master the frost breath as evidence, and say, "That's proof of our history."
As youngsters, Elmira and her friends were unable to control their "frost breath" powers, and constantly wrecked havoc. Being able to master that ability was a huge stage in your life, and you would get a free ice-cream from the ice-cream truck as a celebration. As they grew older though, it was clear that frost breath wasn't anything special; everyone had it. Who cared if you could make frost grow on a rock? They could too! But it was just like celebrating birthdays when you were young, thinking it was the most important thing in the world. They cherished that innocence and those childhood beliefs.
There was absolutely no technology at all: no T.V., no cellphones, and *gasp* no Wi-Fi! It was just a town that could be considered a winter wonderland, keeping its economy stable by the few crops they could grow. The citizens' frost breath helped with the economy too; some people could keep the frost from melting for a long period of time, and they would make designs or sculptures from the frost, which they then gave to Kiamaras in the big cities to preserve properly with technology and sell.
The frost breath was nothing too special to them. It was a small part of then, like an idea that came and went.
However, to the cities, in a town hidden from the entire world, there was a secret of snow and ice as though from a fairytale.

backstory: It all began in a rather secluded settlement, where this kiamara was born. But the town was not constantly bogged down in snow, as one might think upon first laying eyes on her. No, this town was a lovely and bright town that seemed to be stuck in an eternal summer. However, the denizens of this town were really quite greedy, and decided to take advantage of the constant sunlight to grow food and produce all year round, which they would then sell at an inflated price to the towns that were covered from peak to valley in snow, unable to grow food for themselves.

But all that changed after this kiamara was born.

Normally, kiamaras born and living in this town had naturally short coats, an adaptation gained over the years that prevented them from overheating while working in the hot, hot sun, harvesting food all year.

But this one, this strange little kiamara Solstice, was born with an unusually thick coat, her body constantly cold and shivering. Her parents were worried at first, fearing that this anomaly would set her aside from the other little kias of the town, and ultimately, prevent her from working in the fields like the rest.

The mark on her shoulder, a mark that resembled a snowflake, was what worried them most. Snow was something that the town absolutely despised, because it would render them the same as the other towns -- poor and starving at wintertime. At a young age she was given a shawl to cover her mark. Her parents told her never to take it off in public. And she didn't.

Little Sol was well-received by her peers and proved herself to be a fine worker. She harvested produce with ease under the blazing hot sun. In fact, her differences seemed to help her; she was never drenched in sweat after a day's work. All was well, her differences seemingly forgotten.

But then there came a day when the sunlight was blotted out. For the first time in centuries, snow appeared at the heart of the town. The sky became a cold, unforgiving grey.

The plants on which the town depended for money withered away in the frost. Orders were coming in from all over the country, demanding their food. But there was nothing. Nothing but snow.

No one could figure out why the sunlight that they had enjoyed for so long had suddenly disappeared overnight. The town's dissent was voiced in a cry of outrage. They all turned towards strange little Sol. With her long coat and cold breath, she was considered a prime suspect by the panicked town.

The kiamaras of the town gathered, an angry mob, at the door of the mayor. An emergency meeting was called. Kiamaras milled about in the the town square. It was more crowded than it had ever been in years. Most of the time everyone was tending to his or her field. First snow, first crowds... there certainly were a lot of firsts that day.

After a hushed discussion, the mayor announced, in a booming voice: "We have decided that the kiamara Solstice must leave, for she is certainly the cause of this widespread cold. Her name was given to her as a representation of the longest day, a day where the most work can be accomplished, a day where the most money can be made... but she has forsaken us! She instead took it as a representation of the shortest day... of the terrible, cold winter! Her fur and cold breath are proof that she is the embodiment of winter, a season that hinders our progress. For that it must be banished!"

Agreement rippled through the crowd.

"I have nothing to do with this! Are you blind?" argued Sol. "Can't you see that it has been getting colder all around? Wake up and see the reality that is all around you! You've lived through easy days of sunshine and rainbows for too long! But reality is not so...

"You've ignored the others who've suffered; instead of helping them in their time of need, you've made them pay. And now you will pay too. You all are undeserving of the pile of gold upon which you sit!" she sneered.

"Enough!" called the crowd, some kiamaras lurching towards her in anger.

"Can't you see it's true?!" she cried, moving away from the aggressive crowd, barely dodging an angry swipe from an old farmer. "Your sunny days were numbered anyway! I can't believe you actually thought you'd have sun forever and ever and ever! HA! EVERYONE HAS THEIR WINTER! AND YOU'RE NO EXCEPTION!"

"That's enough!" cried the mayor. "Remove yourself from the premises! You have an hour to gather your belongings, and then you will no longer be allowed in this town! It was YOU who brought this winter to us, it was YOU! You are trying to destroy our way of life! YOU are the one who is blind! Stop the snow this instant! If you won't, then take it elsewhere! LEAVE!"

"Yes, take it elsewhere..." the crowd chanted.

"There we go again..." said Sol, shaking her head. "You think it is me that caused this snowstorm. It wasn't me. All I'm saying is that it was a natural turn of events --"

Suddenly, a large, frozen tomato flew through the air, barely missing her nose. "Hey! Stop!" she snarled. Another hit her square in the shoulder, taking her shawl with it as it fell. She reached for it, but she knew it was hopeless. Her bare shoulder faced the crowd, the snowflake marking clear as day.

"A snowflake!" screamed a voice, filled with disbelief, from somewhere in the crowd. "Yes, it is truly she who caused this winter!"

More spoiled fruit followed, and she was forced to leave the town square.

Image

She gathered what few possessions she had. She grinned maliciously as she did so.

"Oh, they'll see," she said to herself. "Banishing me won't do a thing."

She left for the far-off mountains, and found, as she traveled further and further north, that the mountains were covered, quite thickly, with snow.

"That's strange," she pondered. "Didn't they say these mountains were volcanoes? They're so distant and far off; no one from the town has ever visited them... But I know they shouldn't be frozen over."

Several days had passed before she finally reached top of one of the volcanoes. The crater, which once had released a constant and steady stream of overwhelming heat, was sealed shut by a large boulder. From her vantage point atop the mountain, she gazed at some of the smaller volcanoes, finding that their tops had been covered as well.

"So that's why it's so cold," she said, to no one in particular. The trees rustled in the wind, snow falling from atop their branches. "But this cold... this snow... it's quite nice. It's very pretty. I don't see why the town disliked it. Perhaps it is too different, too bold for them. Like me.

"Maybe I should tell them. Tell them that returning their sunlight is only a matter moving a couple of rocks."

But another malevolent grin spread across her face. "No," she declared, pressing her paw into the snow, quite melodramatically. "I'll let them suffer, just as they did me. I won't give them another chance. I'll give them... a taste of their own medicine!

"Yes... and if anyone tries to set foot on this volcano, I will chase them out! I will keep them in an eternal snowstorm... I'll be their winter solstice! I'll be the bane of their existence! By trying to destroy me, they've given me the power to destroy them!"

And so, having forever destroyed the economic position of the town from where she came, she realized she could never return. She chose to wander the snowy mountains instead, basking in her revenge.

Other Tidbits;;

Personality: Imaginative | Naive | Stubborn | Determined | Spiteful | Vengeful | Unforgiving | Overly Dramatic
Residence: She lives in an abandoned log cabin atop the volcano she wanders.
Occupation: She doesn't work anywhere. She lives off of the land, specifically the frozen volcanoes. She sees her job as guarding them. She will visit the town, usually in disguise, and scrounge around if she really needs something. Although she came from a rich town, she never had very many possessions to begin with, so she is used to living like this.
Physical Traits & Abilities: Any sort of physical work comes easily to her. She is of a robust build, and her body can withstand extreme stress. She is strong, overall. She rarely overheats (or gets cold) because she is able to maintain her body temperature. But there's a catch -- it is much lower than other that of regular kiamaras, because it takes too much energy to keep it at a high temperature. Even her breath is cold. Overall, her physical self is super-efficient and conserves energy wherever possible.
Talents: She showed an innate artistic ability when she was younger, but she never really had the chance to develop this.
Hobbies: She loves to build sculptures out of snow. She also loves to read; she will sometimes leave her volcano solely to search for new reading material.
Feathers: She was given her feather before she was banished, after showing exceptional working skill in the fields. Though still a feather, it was broader and larger than most because it was meant to represent the plants she had harvested.
Orientation: Demiromantic Demisexual
She hasn't shown romantic interest since her banishing, and hasn't been known to at all, for that matter. But perhaps if someone shared her motives...

my life started in a town, a dull, grey town. it was hot and muggy, and i guessed that changed the minds of all the kiamaras around me. all i ever heard was 'we need more money!', 'we need more crops!', 'we want!', 'we need!' me; i was a young child when i realized there was something missing. in fact, many things were missing in my life. a community of loving kiamaras, unlike the greedy indidviduals all around me. necessity had gone to waste as more and more kiamaras began to riot. their shouts of needing more money and more food, the burning homes, the screaming, it scared me. one day, another thing that was missing; was life. we didn't have any seasons, no wildlife, just humid air and anger everywhere i went. one day when i was about ten, i decided that enough was enough. i asked for no consent or permission, i just left.

ᴀ ɴᴇᴡ ʟɪғᴇ;
that day, to my luck, a trade ship from the mainland had come with more useless goods. no food, no drink, just swords and guns, the weapons of evil. i leaped upon the ship and immediately rushed to find a place to hide. i hid in the dark, deep dungeon where they held unruly crew members. i found a corner, and started to weep. "no turning back now, i am truly alone." was the first thing i'd deeply thought in that mad rush from my town to the ship. all too quickly, water sloshed at my feet and rats skittered across the floor. the rocking boat and the murky, black water matted my bright-blue fur. my white mane was soggy. the shawl i wore around my neck was soaked, the small puffs on the edges flat and a muddy brown. the water grew deeper, soon it was up to my loosely tied mane. "this is the end," i thought. "you should have never left, Kirsta." Soon, the crashing thunder stopped, and no more water was pouring into my chamber. i swam over to the rotted wood steps, and opened the door. saltwater burst through, accelerating me all the way to the starboard side of the ship. suddenly, i realized something. no one was around. they had all jumped overboard when they realized they realized their ship was going to go down. "if only they had held on." i muttered. i noticed a small wooden boat, some glass bottles of water and some salted meat in a container. i hurried to the boat, untied it, grabbed the food and drink, and was on the water. after days of paddling, rationing food and water, and scrawling the days i'd been on the water, I hit land.

i hit land, and i noticed some brightly colored kiamaras climbing trees. they glanced at me, and rushed to my aid. "you look so sick, are you okay?" "where did you come from?" i meekly said, "i want to find life." one of them replied, "life is everywhere. you're going to have to go on a big journey to find all of life." they took to a small village and nursed me back to health. soon, i was on my way to discover "all of life." i found not only winter, but i found spring, summer, and fall. the world wasn't grey anymore. the pink sunsets, the cloudy blue-greys, the blood orange sunrises, and much more. the most amazing thing was a thing i learned myself. while living with a group of pure white kiamaras, i learned how to use frost breath. my frost breath allows me to freeze things when i exhale. i can only do it ever so often, and only use it for good. the point of this retelling is that not only did i discover life, but i found myself. now, no more time for this story. i must put my earmuffs and shawl on and discover the world.

Sorry for the wait, guys!
This contest was reaaaalllly hard to judge for multiple reasons, but I think I have it figured out. All of your forms were phenominal, and I wish I could choose 900 different winners. :<

I considered giving out a RU, but I decided against that and there will just be one winner.
Never mind, there will be one RU because I had such a hard time choosing. RainbowCharizard, if you choose to accept, stay tuned for a runner-up Kiamara! :>

Please don't post if you have nothing nice to say, and do not PM the winner with anything even remotely mean. I have seen this happen far too often and will not tolerate it, so please don't be rude.

So, without further ado, our winner...

1956 - The Cave Behind the Waterfall

Bright, white snow swirled over paw prints left behind in the early-evening sun. Up ahead, a teal and white kiamara stared at her paws as she padded along through the light snowfall. In the pine trees before her lie a shimmering waterfall, it's icy water cascading into a pool below. As the young kiamara reached the tumbling water, she picked up her pace. Galloping, she rushed forward and in one giant leap, she disappeared through the waterfall.

Once inside, crystals seemed to fall off her fur as she shook the drops off of her pelt. The female kiamara snuggled up in a pile of fabric scraps she had collected and closed her eyes, though it was clear she was still awake as she jumped up at any sudden noises. She breathed heavily and rapidly before seeming to cool off. Sometimes, one just needed a break from home and that was exactly what she was doing.

Time passed slowly but this kia was content to go over her thoughts in silence. She spent almost all day like this, lying alone in the mysterious cave behind the waterfall. She went there to calm down or just be alone, as plenty of people do. Normally, the journey seemed like an adventure to a secret destination. This time was different.

While she was in the cave, a snowstorm had begun high on the mountain. The storm raged outside but it was time to go home. Her family mustn't worry or panic, heavy snowfall was nothing new. She took a few steps back and ran forward, gaining momentum to leap back through the waterfall. White paws crashed against the stone floor as she headed for the rushing water. A patch of ice glazed the surface of the ledge, but it was too late to slow down now. The kiamara's front paws left the floor as she took a big step and leapt into the air. But she misjudged her footing, as shining droplets of water covered her pelt and her torso exited the fall of mountain run-off, she plunged headfirst into the quickly-freezing water.

She struggled to come back afloat as the air was knocked out of her by the cold. Water flooded her lungs while she sunk deeper into the pool of slushy mountain water. Panic seemed to fill her up from top to bottom. She thrashed around even more as her sodden fur weighed her down and dragged her further into the shallow depths of the slushy water. Spots blurred her vision and the white and teal kiamara blacked out.

2007 – The Discovery
Wandering alone in the Swiss Alps, a young scientist stumbled upon a pool of ice, a wide opening in the stone walls behind it. The cave wall had been eroded over time, the once jagged rock now smooth and shiny, as was the waterfall that once covered it. The source from which the waterfall was emerging seemed to have stopped providing for the small pond and stream down below. Now, the pond remained, completely frozen.

He walked over the pool of frozen water, trying to see the depth to which it extended. The pool had not been very deep, but enough so that if he fell in, he would have a difficult time getting out. The water would have been over his head, he was glad that now it was entirely ice and he didn’t have to worry about slipping and falling into the frigid water.

He tried to make out the shapes below his feet, frozen in the thick layer of ice. He passed over one particularly interesting form as he passed over top of it. He squinted at the turquoise blob beneath him, attempting to tell what it was. He stared for a few more moments before deciding he would come back tomorrow with a pick to carve it out of the ice.

* * *

The early morning sun began to rise into the sky as the scientist set out the next day, alone once again. He carried with him his pick, and whistled as he went.

Upon arrival at the location of the waterfall, the scientist set to work chipping away at the ice to discover what lay down below. Shards of frozen water flew and sparkled in the air as he dug farther and farther into the pool. He dug around the shape in the glass until he was able to attach cords to the object and pull it out. He squinted at it, trying to make out the blurry form in the ice. Wait, it wasn’t an object hidden in the ice, it was a kiamara!

The scientist jumped back in surprise before returning to the side of the ice chunk. He stared at it a moment longer before re-attaching the cords he had brought. After examination, he found that the other kiamara trapped in the ice was a female who was only about 14 or 15 years old, still quite young. The scientist grabbed hold of the ropes and began to drag the ice back towards his lab. There might still be a chance to unfreeze this kiamara and he was going to take it.

2007 - Awakening - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ---------------------------------------- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------
My eyes snapped open to see two men I didn’t know standing directly in front of me. I jumped back, surprised to see the two strangers in front of me. I glanced around me, starting to panic as I had no recollection of who I was, where I was or why I was there. All that I knew –if I knew anything at all- seemed to have disappeared from my mind. My brain was completely empty of memories. “W-where am I?” I accidentally said aloud.

I lay in a pool of water and I was freezing, my teeth chattering even though I didn’t realize they were. These men in front of me seemed to be studying me though I had not the slightest idea why. The whole situation was beginning to frighten me. The more I tried to push my memory and remember why I was here or where I was before here or who I was, the more it all seemed to elude me. I had no idea what to do but get away from these strangers. I began to slowly edge backwards, fur bristling when I slipped and came crashing to the floor.

“I see you’re awake,” one of the scientists said. “My name is John and this is my colleague, Frederic. Welcome to our lab.”

“A l-l-lab?” I stuttered, still frightened. Why would I be in a lab? I wasn’t being experimented on, was I? “H-how did I get here? Who am I? Where is this lab?” I asked.

The scientist frowned at my confusion, “Do you remember anything before you were frozen in that pool of ice?”

“Frozen? What’s going on? How did I get here?” I tried again. I didn’t remember being frozen in ice or how, if it was true, I had ended up in that ice. The more questions I asked, the more confused I seemed to get. I needed some answers.

“You don’t remember anything?” Frederic chimed in. “Anything at all? Nothing before you were frozen in that pool? How you ended up there..?”

I frowned, this was all too perplexing. Why didn’t I remember? A tear rolled down my cheek as the two scientists asked me question after question I didn’t know the answer to. I shook my head and sniffled, “I don’t remember a thing, not even my name. Could you please explain this all to me?” I gestured around the room as I spoke.

As I had asked, I was told what the two scientists knew about me. They had found me in a patch of ice in the Swiss Alps, where it seemed there used to be a waterfall. The pool beneath the place of the waterfall was where I had been frozen. I had been dug up by the two scientists and brought back here. That was it. It wasn’t much at all, but it was something, and now that I had learned all the information I would get, it was time to restart my life.
