personality: perth is a gentle soul who couldn't even swat a fly. he has an overwhelming concern for the environment and nature, and eagerly tries to pursue a life of being green. he's very organized and manages to keep all of his belongings in immaculate order, assuring himself that it shouldn't be hard to go back and find the thing he'd been seeking. he can't just call out to someone and ask where it is, after all. he keeps to himself, barely associating himself with crowds or other plumerians; whilst he also craves romance and attention, he refuses to let himself grow too connected in fears that his deafness will ruin things later on. he's hopeless when it comes to putting others before himself; being caught up in keeping his own feelings locked up in a box makes for others to claim he's selfish and immature.

• he sings in his sleep, which is strange for a deaf plumie, but people have said it's breathtaking
• listens to music by placing a paw on a speaker and feeling the vibrations

his deafness: he was not born into a world of silence. during his first five years of life, he discovered the sounds of music, the sounds of his mother's laughter, and the sound of wind chimes tinkling: all of which made him feel like he would be able to hear forever. when he was born, he was declared a healthy child, but at the age of three, problems occurred in the middle ear portion of his ears. the doctors told his parents first: they told him about the conductive deafness ravaging their son's hearing. choosing not to tell him in fear of panic, they plainly rushed him into sign language classes, which he thought were foolish but he took them anyways. it was when he was four and strained to hear his favorite song that they told him important tiny bones in the middle ear were failing, unable to pass sound waves throughout his ears. he didn't understand until he woke up to ringing inside his ears and nothing but silence one morning, and he screamed and cried, in which both fell upon empty hearing.

communication: at work, the children don't really seem to understand deaf sometimes. they'll yell at him and become offended when he moves a paw backwards against his chin, below his bottom lip, moving his fists in a downward movement in front of himself, then he taps his ear twice. this means 'i cannot hear' in sign language. he'll only sigh and motion to the expo board in the exhibit reading: "our worker, perth, is deaf! please point to a problem or speak slowly and he will understand to the best of his abilities. if possible, seek out another worker first." his sign language is restricted what with paws, so he tries to read lips instead and will type an answer onto his phone, then press a text-to-audio converter, and a cheerful robotic voice will read what he cannot say. he focuses very heavily on technology for his communication.

backstory: as a child, he felt he lived to his fullest when he could actually hear, and he has retained many, many memories from those first five years of his life. school became very hard for him, as he could no longer call out to preschool friends or hear the enlightening laughter of others. he fell into depression at just seven years old, in second grade, when he was moved to a different school specializing with children with special needs. he hated it there, and angrily chose to go to a public school for his middle school and high school years once more. there he went through bullying, but many chose to leave him alone, and he felt normal until something else arose: the realization of his sexuality.

he realized freshman year that he was definitely more into males, and knew it had to be wrong. others didn't feel that way about the same gender, right? he researched it on the internet and came to terms with his sexuality, until senior year, when his parents saw him holding hands with his best friend who he walked home with every day. they thought it was unnatural and cut off all ties with the school, transferring him into a homeschooling unit in their own living room. they barely let him go off to college, fearing he'd find another male. surely, though, this would not change inside of him, and reluctantly he decided to move far away from his parents in virginia and ditch their hopeful major for him of accounting. he switched to entomology, with sign language and culinary studies as his minor. he is in year two of college and has taken up the occupation of a butterfly specialist in the exhibit at the local zoo, alongside two others.

As a young child Perth grew up with his mother, unsure to where his father was. He never truly wondered about his father, no, but he was always so focused on the stars above. He wasn't born deaf, in fact he could hear just fine so when Perth started hearing less and less he grew scared. Eventually his mother took him to the doctor, she hadn't thought much of if and believed Perth was fine. Unfortunately, it had already been to late. At the age of 5 Perths nerves had been attacked by an unknown virus, causing his ears to slowly fail him. By the age of 7 he was completely deaf, the medication had not been able to save his hearing. He and his mother were devastated, and Perth wasn't ready to go on into the world. He spent quite a bit of time in his room, rarely ever coming out. His mother did feel bad, but knew there was nothing they would be able to do. She didn't want her baby to be confined to his room forever, and she knew he had a deep love of stars. On Perths 8th birthday she had bought him a giant telescope, and that lifted his spirits much more. He set it up in his room by the window, and at night he would spend hours looking outside and identify the constellations.

Although it had been two years since Perth was pronounced deaf, 9 year old Perth needed a better way to communicate other than writing it down. Although he did know how to speak, he preferred not to due to his inability to hear himself. He and his mother learned sign language, and by the age of 11 he was ready to go out into the world. His deafness came by surprise, and due to this his mother had pulled him out of school. He was pretty far behind, but with a lot of hard work they caught him up and he was ready. He went to a special school where he noticed many other disabled Plumerians, and he didn't feel so alone anymore. although he had a bit of a hard time socializing with other Plumerians, he had found a way. Perth had been able to read, so when someone didn't know sign language very well he would simply motion for them to write it out.

At the age of 17 Perth was like any other teenage boy, rambunctious and rather sneaky. One thing Perth had always enjoyed; a good party. He never drank, although he had been tempted quite a few times to at least try it and see what would happen. It was still hard to socialize, but it was always manageable in a way. At this point perch had felt okay with not hearing anything, although he wished he could hear the sound of his mothers voice again, or listen to music just one more time. Unfortunately, that couldn't happen, but Perth will always have that dream.

When Perth was 18 he was still as fascinated with the stars as he was when he was younger. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to pursue his dream of becoming an astronomer of some sort due to having little money for college due to growing up in a one parent home. Although he was crushed, Perth was determined and started to look for a job.

Not many jobs were easy for someone that was deaf, and it was in fact a horrible ride for him. He tried his hardest, unable to find work for himself. Everything required hearing. At this point, Perth had been ready to give up. Finally, one of his friends offered to help him out with communication, willing to be his mouth and ears for him. They eventually found work in the food business, and although it was difficult they made it work. He currently is working to go to college in order to become an astronomer.

Perth; a name meaning from the thorn bush or thicket, fitting considering his hardships cause by his disability; people with this name often have a great interest in travel and worldliness.

Perth identifies as male, and uses masculine (he/him) pronouns.

➣d i s a b i l i t y
What do you do when you cannot hear anyone? You dream. Perth is deaf. He cannot speak, nor can he hear.This pains him, as he really does wish to know what it's like to hear the world, and communicate with other Plumies normally. However, Perth has found a resourceful way to cope with his disability -- while he is deaf, Perth's eyesight is exceptionally good, and thus he uses this gift to its fullest potential. Since has paws,so he can't use sign language; no, Perth opts for a different mode of communication. He has a small white board, with a marker (shown below), that he carries everywhere he goes and writes what he wants to say on it. He then hands it to the other person and asks them to do the same so he can read it. It's his own special way of interacting with the world around him, and he's been able to make his way through the world despite his deafness. His favorite symbol is a heart, in accordance with his loving nature, and it's rare that his little messages aren't ended with one.

Perth identifies as bisexual, with a homosexual lean -- while he is attracted mostly to men, he wouldn't mind being with a girl if she was the right one!

Not surprisingly, due to his talent for writing and love for teaching (Perth is also a school teacher on the weekdays, minus Friday. He teaches younger Plumies; his subjects are English and Writing), he writes books for children and young adults. Perth is also quite the artist, and does commissions if he has free time or needs a little extra cash.

Aqua

Like everyone, Aqua has given him a nickname -- around Aqua, Perth goes by Perthy. She often steals his whiteboard as a joke, running off with it and hiding it in a playful game of hide-and-seek. He considers her a good friend, and feels protective of her, as if he were her big brother; but you can only be so threatening when you can only write on a board.

Melody

Melody, or Mel, as he likes to call her, is one of his student's -- one that that he is particularly fond of, and that he doesn't mind spending time with. She enjoys spending time with him as well, since she likes silence.

Leonardo

Leon is another one of his students, a perfect fit his class since he loves to write. Most often, it's Leon giving his classmates grammar lessons.

Titan
Titan is a rabbit, Perth's childhood pet and best friend; he loves that rabbit to death.

Perth is one of the most mellow Plumies you will ever meet. He has nary a mean or excitable bone in his body, and handles stressful situations with a cool head and steady hands.

He is very gentle and loving towards almost everyone he meets, and will always lend a helping paw to anyone who happens to need it.

Perth spends most of his time alone, writing his books or drawing. He isn't a big fan of crowds or just being around a person at all, so when he meets someone he's not familiar with, he's is often very shy and tends to make spelling errors when writing to them.

It really doesn't take much taunting or rudeness to make Perth cry. He is very self conscious and doesn't take much pride in himself or his appearance, especially that he's deaf and has difficulty dealing with others. However, he does have one trait he prides himself on -- his eyes. That deep, teal color is his favorite.


Depressive

Surprisingly, Perth suffers from unipolar depression.When he has nothing to do, and is alone with his thoughts, his mind becomes a nightmare of "what if's". -- what if my friends hate me,what if I'm annoying,what if I die tomorrow,what if someone I love dies..? It doesn't take much to send Perth into a downward spiral; part of the reason he focuses so intently on his writing.

Above all, Perth wants to travel the world with his best friend,Eleazar. Never one to let his disability hold him back, he has always wanted to globetrot, desperate to learn more about the world around him, always filled with wistfulness and wanderlust. And he has finally found someone who shares this dream -- Eleazar. He's willing to do almost anything to make his dream a reality, no matter how long it may take.

hello there! my name is meowien, currently the owner of two lovely plumies -- and I'd love to make Perth my third.
His design really caught my eye -- he has four of my favorite things! One, a pattern of tan colors. Instant love already. Two, a bright turquoise color -- almost neon. Three, he has a heart marking. What could be more adorable than that? You have no idea how much I love heart symbols. Heck, I always put a <3 somewhere in my posts. Lastly, he has a sort of issue that I can work with -- I enjoy the challenge of helping a character around his or her disability. But that's all skin deep -- I haven't connected this much with a Plumie since #339. This is a design I love to death, and it inspires me to no end -- I've fallen in love with Perth, even his flaws.
