Short Story: Mint remembers her first experience with peppermint only in short memories, as she was very young when she was first introduced. From what Mint remembers it was a cold, snowy December day. Then her memory fades away. The next memory that she has was next to a tree with strange glowing lights and strange stripped upside-down J's. The last memory that Mint has was nibbling on the strange upside-down J's and feeling warmth and happiness.
Mint may not remember every blissful detail, however I do. Allow me to piece together Mint's scattered and faded memory. Mint had been with her mother walking through a field with the rest of their herd. The snow had been falling lightly but was getting increasingly worse. Mint had gotten separated from her mom and ended up wandering around the field in circles. She was cold and alone. One of my own Chincoteague Nymph Ponies had escaped from the barn and I had been out bringing her home. I happened to stumble upon this tiny foal walking in the same sad circle, looking for her mother.
Now knowing me, I could not leave her there alone to freeze. I had managed to get Mint to follow my pony back to the barn, but that is a story for another day. The tree with strange glowing lights was none other than the Christmas tree that was outside the door of the barn. Of course I decorated the tree with horse friendly treats that I could just grab and bring into the barn. Those upside-down J's Mint remembers were none other than peppermint candy canes.
The morning after I found Mint, I had come down to the barn to find not just one candy cane gone, but the majority of them missing. The only ones she left were the ones out of her reach. I reached up to grab one and her eyes lit up. She instantly won over my heart, and once I realized how much she loved peppermint, I knew instantly her name would be Mint.
