The okapi is sometimes called the forest giraffe or forest zebra, but one of its lesser known (unofficial) names is the “African unicorn.” The okapi was so dubbed because, until 1901, many believed the creature was a myth.

Fact: The mysterious creature was named Equus johnstoni, or "horse Johnston" (after the governor of Uganda, Sir Henry Johnston) first. As a skull was found later, it was clear that it could not be a relative of the horse. Based on the name, the indigenous tribes had given to the animal, it was renamed "Okapi johnstoni".
