Answer: Russell's best friend is {h o r s e}'s Monochrome.
Russell, for a while, was a pushover. He didn't think for himself, and constantly needed a leader. The stallion saw Monochrome as a rather strong 'quid, and latched on. And for a while, Monochrome was fine and dandy with having her personal follower. After a while, though, Monochrome became increasingly annoyed with his constant presence. One day, Russell was, quite literally, breathing down her neck, and the mare snapped.

"Will you stop that?" Monochrome turned on her heel and narrowed her eyes at Russell, who stumbled backwards. "Stop acting like some lovesick puppy!"
Russell shied away and said, almost inaudibly, "I-I'm sorry M-M-Monochrome." He constantly stuttered when he was nervous.
Monochrome rolled her eyes at the wide-eyed stallion. "You need to learn to not be so follower-oriented."
"I don't think I know how to do that..."
Monochrome took her body and slammed it into Russell, forcing him off balance. "I just came at you. What are you going to do?"
Russell glanced up to her. "I am going to avoid conflict and walk away."
"Wrong. Consider this spot your territory. You do not let any equid take your territory, understand? Try again. Stand here." Monochrome motioned to a place.
"Okay." Russell obediently stood firmly where Monochrome told him to. Oncemore, Monochrome slammed into Russell, and he briefly teetered, but managed to stay put. His "retaliation" was a gentle nip to the mare's neck. Monochrome gave an exasperated sigh and said, "We're not in love! Be aggressive!"
They spent the rest of that day practicing the same thing. By the end, Monochrome was beginning to wince slightly at the stallion's attacks.

The next day, Russell slightly edged himself up, walking beside Monochrome's rump rather than directly behind her. Without looking back, the mare neighed to him, "Stop following me. I am not your leader, not your brain. Either walk beside me or go away." The mare had to admit she was slightly disappointed when Russell stopped and simply let her move on. Suddenly, she whipped back around. "And don't let me boss you around. You have to stand up for yourself, Russell."
"I want to learn how to do everything you're telling me to do, Monochrome. I'm not like you, not yet. I can't stare an equid down, make a stand. I don't know how." Russell's voice was stronger.
Monochrome studied the stallion, pondering for a moment. "I can help you."

In the following days, Monochrome coached Russell on everything having to do with confidence and leadership. He was a dutiful student, and learned quickly. Soon enough, Russell could be found among the other group of stallions, laughing and wrestling. Yet he was much happier when he was with Monochrome. And the next week, he no longer walked behind the mare, he walked beside her. As equals. As friends.
