What injury put a stop to his racing days? Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's broken bones and dislocated ankle may have been repaired by surgery, but the injuries were so devastating his life remained in jeopardy.

What injury put a stop to his racing days? He fractured three bones in and around the fetlock of his right hind leg and then developed laminitis in his left rear leg. Then once he underwent a successful surgery in his right leg, he developed laminitis in both of his front legs. He was then euthanized by his veterinarian under his owners' consent.
Link: What a shame he's no longer with us :/
Fact: He won his first ever official race which was at Delaware Park, in Wilmington, Delaware.

Fact: Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby by charging ahead at the last straightaway, gaining a lead of six and a half lengths, the largest margin since 1946 when Assault (Triple Crown Winner) took the lead by eight full lengths.

Fact: Unfortunately, many healthy racehorses end up at the slaughterhouse because they are at retiring age or have not brought in enough profit to their owners. Ferdinand, Kentucky Derby winner and Eclipse Horse of the Year, met this terrible fate in 2002. Help them if you can - adopt one, train some to become jumpers (I have done this before), and they are the sweetest, most loyal horses you may ever meet.

Fact: According to the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses, 18,000 horses are bred for racing each year. At any one time, around 31,000 thoroughbreds are ‘in training’ in Australia - the number is beginning to drop, however.

What injury put a stop to his racing days? After breaking out of the gate, Barbaro landed wrong on his right hind leg, which put more of his body weight on the leg than it could hold. This resulted in a broken cannon bone above the pastern, a broken sesamoid bone behind the fetlock, and a broken long pastern bone below the fetlock. In addition to the fractures, he also dislocated his fetlock joint.

Fact: The lineage of all racing Thoroughbreds today can be traced back to 3 individual sires, the Godolphin Arabian, the Darley Arabian, and the Byerley Turk. Although a majority of today's thoroughbreds are closer related to the Godolphin Arabian than the other sires, approximately 95% of all male thoroughbreds can trace their heritage back to the Darley Arabian.

Seeing this equid made makes me very happy (and also a little sad at the same time to remember). I was an avid follower of Barbaro after I watched his Kentucky Derby victory live, and I still have my pile of Barbaro story newpaper cuttings and the Barbaro Breyer horse model on my desk at home.

Fact: Wild horses usually give birth in mid to late spring, but racing horses are bred to be born as close to January 1 as possible. This will give them a size advantage when competing against other horses born later in the year.
