Small 500 word story:
Skitter, skitter, faint chirp, skitter, skitter. There, lurking in the darkness, what is it? Another skittering noise. What on earth could it be? A faint scratching noise is heard, so faint, almost inaudible. When going to investigate though, there's nothing there. Could it be my imagination? Or a ghost perhaps? What could that possibly be? Skitter, skitter, faint chirp, skitter skitter. Wait, has it left the room? Where could it be heading now?
I know it's here somewhere, I saw them have it, it's somewhere. But where? Wasn't in the last room. Maybe it's in here? Hmm, I know it smells good, where did they put it? In here? No, not there....but wait, what about over here? No, not there either. Over there maybe? Is it not in this room? Better move to the next one then...
Is there something glowing? I could have sworn I saw something...but it's not there anymore. Skitter, skitter, faint chirp, skitter, skitter. Is it a mouse maybe? Did a creature get in the house? Maybe it scurried in when I got home? Or someone left he window open? Turn on the light, but nothing's here. Skitter, skitter, faint chirp, skitter, skitter. It must have moved on. It sounds like it's in the kitchen. Is that the rustling of wrappers?
Ah ha! Here it is! I knew they had it! It all smells so good, and it all looks so pretty! I wonder what it is, it smells so sweet. This one's called...gum? What a silly name! Hey, this one looks like an eye, gross, and that one looks like an ear. What is this stuff anyway? Oh! Those ones are so pretty, and this one smells like grapes, this one has a stick in it, and this one looks really fake.
Skitter, rustle, skitter, chirp, skitter, rustle, skitter. What in the world? Did it get into the candy? Turn on the light again after seeing a faint glow, and well...what do you know! There, among all the candy that was left out on the table, is a little flinching, glowing red, he's buried himself among the candy. He pokes his head out and I can't help but laugh, sneaking over and reaching out gently. He chirps and emerges from his candy burrow, rubbing against my hand. I pet him and hold him, and cuddle him close and gently before taking him upstairs. I think I'll name him Kyandi, the sweet little thing. He chirps and sings and cuddles with me while I sleep.
