PTP Name: Kuiper
PTP Gender: Male
PTP Rarity: Rare
Link to your favourite thing in space: The Kuiper Belt
HistoryThe Kuiper Belt is a thick band of small celestial bodies that orbit outside the orbit of Neptune. Hypothesized many times since the 30's, it wasn't until Gerard Kuiper's publication on the subject in the journal Astrophysics in 1954 that the hypothesis became more widespread. Kuiper's original belief was that the belt had formed during the beginning of the solar system, but no longer existed.
In 1987, MIT-Graduate duo David Jewitt and Jane Luu began investigating "the apparent emptiness of the Solar System", discovering two candidates for Kuiper Belt objects [(15760) 1992 QB2 and (181708) 1993 FW five years later. This pulled more studies toward the mysterious belt, and its connection with the Oort Cloud.
Interesting Facts• Three dwarf planets both reside in and dip into the orbit of the Kuiper belt, including MakeMake, Haumea, and Pluto.
• It is hypothesized that some of the planets moons, such as Neptune's Triton and Saturn's Phoebe originate from the Kuiper Belt.
• It is similar to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, but is 20 times wider and is 20-200 times as massive.
