      quote from this episode
also just in case you haven't seen the tv show
    amethyst's story;
"Come on, Amateur!" Carter* called out.

"Carter, I told you to stop calling me Amateur. You know I don't any of your nicknames for me," Amethyst replied, sounding a bit annoyed.

Carter turned around while walking backwards, "Hey, come on, Buttercup. Cheer up, we're going for a trip." Carter tried to add some pep to his tone, hoping his attitude will change Amethyst's.

Amethyst looked up at Carter, "Well, where are we going?" There was just a slight hint of annoyance in Amethyst's voice now.
"It's a surprise, you'll find out when we get there," Carter replied, turning back around to walk normally.

The two kept on their walk, going up and down hills through the town, cutting through fields outside of town. Finally the duo came to the edge of a forest with a large opening with a trail. Amethyst started to slow his pace as they walked through the opening. He was looking around at everything, amazed since he grew up in the city and was never let to go out like this. There were butterflies and bees flying all around. One bee was buzzing around Amethyst and all he could heard was the buzzing noise in his hears and he hated it. He quickly shook it off and hurried to catch up with Carter again, hoping he wouldn't realize he was dragging behind a little.

"Do you know where we're going?" Amethyst asked, a bit worried they might get lost.

"Of course I do, Amateur. I've been coming down here since before you were born," Carter replied, a small smirk on his face.

Carter kept walking back deeper and deeper into the forest, Amethyst right on his heels. They kept going for about another seven minutes until Carter stopped suddenly.

"Hey, why the sudden stop?" Amethyst asked, backing away from Carter since he bumped into him, feeling a big ticked off for him stopping without warning.

"We're here, Amateur," Carter replied, turning around to look at Amethyst. "Well? Come take a look."

Amethyst slowly walked up past Carter and saw what he was talking about - a beautiful, peaceful river that went straight through the middle of the forest. Trees from all around were hanging over the river, as if someone sat on the branch too long and it warped like that. Some lily pads floating around, small, lavender flowers growing every few feet along the river. Everything about it was just beautiful, like nothing Amethyst has ever seen in his young life.

"Wow," Amethyst started out, trying to find the right words. "This- this is absolutely perfect here," He slowly trailed off. He had a big smile on his face and his eyes seemed to look more bubbly than how they normally do.

"Yeah, I thought you'd like it," Carter smirked and turned away, looking up through the leaves of trees to try to see the sun to figure the time.

As Carter was looking away however, Amethyst decided he needed a closer look. So, slowly he crept down a steep slope to get to the edge of the river. He got down to the water so that his front paws were slightly in the river. He looked at himself in his reflection of the water, thinking of how peaceful it all felt.

All of a sudden, the muddy slope Amethyst was standing on had slipped from below him. It was way too muddy for him to try and get a grip or his balance steady. He ended up slipping into the water where the current was faster than he thought. His head bobbed underwater and once he came back up he yelled for Carter, while being taken down stream.

Carter whipped around. "Amethyst!?" he called out, running back to where he last saw Amethyst. He got to the slope and looked out into the river and saw Amethyst's head bobbing underwater slightly a few times as his was being pushed with the current. "Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no..." Carter kept repeating, not knowing what else to say. He hesitated for a split second, and then dove into the river. He swam as hard as he could to try and get caught up to little Amethyst. He was scared out of his wits the little guy would get pulled underwater and hit his head on a rock and go unconscious.

Amethyst was struggling to just keep his head above the water to keep breathing. He called out for Carter again, although he could see him, hoping that would help him get there faster.

Carter swam harder and harder. Then, for a moment, as Amethyst called out his name again, he disappeared underwater. Carter couldn't even tell what he was thinking - it was only his adrenaline keeping him going. What felt like forever of Amethyst being underwater, he finally came back up, grasping for air. Carter got closer and closer, so close until he was right by Amethyst's side. He grabbed Amethyst by the back of the neck gently with his giant mouth and swam him back to safety.

Carter found a flat area on the edge of the river and thought that would be the best spot to climb. Exhausted, Carter pulled Amethyst out of the water and up a small slope and over a log and set him down. The little plumie was gasping for air and coughing on water.

After a few seconds, Amethyst caught his breath and looked up at Carter, who was also trying to get air back into his lungs.

"Never let me do that ever again," Amethyst told Carter, a small smile on his face. "I've had enough adventures for the day, I think it's time to head home."

"I couldn't agree with you more," Carter replied, taking small pauses between each word to catch his breath.

UNDER THE SEA

It was a beautiful day on the seashore. Seven little Plumerian kids were jumping and playing, making their way down the rocks to the shore. There was Arca, the smallest, a little rainbow girl with a heart of gold. Mocha was there too, a young Plumerian who had the loveliest shades of brown. She is blind, so Arca helped her along in places she stumbled. Nala was there too, a pretty Plumerian with white spots and black striped feathers. She was bouncing along with the rest of them, excited to see what they’d find at the seashore. It was their first time down there all together without any adults. The other four Plumerians were Vermont, Otto, Zevia, and the little bunny-eared Calix. Vermont was trying to carefully pick his way down the rocks, but he was also thinking about a girl… a pretty girl he knew, but he was too shy to go and talk to her - for now at least. Otto was jumping down the rocks, a little bit away from the others, wondering if there would be any crab down here or anything that he could bring home and cook. Zevia was poking good-humoured fun at Calix, but she didn’t mean it, and Calix knew that. They were basically racing down the rocks, trying to trip each other and get to the shoreline first. Calix was a purple Plumerian with odd bunny-ears, a mutation that was kind of cool but sometimes he got teased about. He didn’t mind, though. He thought you should live for fun and be happy, so almost nothing got to him. The seven little Plumerians finally made it down to the seashore, Calix getting there a split second before Zevia.
“I win, I win!” he proclaimed.
“No you don’t, it was a tie!” Zevia argued.
“Alright, alright. But we’ve still got to wait till the others get down here. Hey guys! HURRY YOUR FEATHER BUTTS UP!” He bounced a few times, laughing as the others scrambled down the rocks.
“So, what’dya wanna do?” Calix asked.
“Hey, what’s that?” piped up Otto, which was only the second time he’d talked the whole trip.
“What?” said Nala, hopping down next to them.
“That,” he said, pointing to a deep, dark part of the water with his tail.
“I wanna figure out what it is,” said Vermont. He dived into the water. Mocha heard the splash and squealed. “Stop! We don’t know what’s down there!”
“Oh relax,” said Calix. “We’ll help him if something happens. I bet it’s fine.” Sure enough, Vermont’s head reappeared right after.
“Hey guys! GUYS! I found a cave! It’s cool! We should check it out!” He scrambled up on land, fur dripping, feathers drooping slightly from the water. “One of us should go. Someone who can hold their breath for the longest.
“Well I can’t go, I won’t be able to see anything,” Mocha said.
“I’m not the best swimmer and well.. I don’t wanna go!” Arca said.
The others all made excuses, backing up a few steps, except for Zevia and Calix.
“I’ll go,” said Calix. “I can hold my breath and I wanna know what’s in the cave!”
“No, no, no! You don’t know if there’ll be air above it or anything. It’s not safe. Don’t do it, Calix!” Mocha protested.
“C’mon, Calix, it won’t do any harm. You said it yourself, you can hold your breath for a long time.” Otto said.
“I’m going with you, then,” Zevia told him sternly. “You’re not backing out.”
All the rest of them had their opinions on it. Arca, Mocha, and Nala wanted them to stay, Otto and Vermont thought it would be kind of cool.
“Alright, alright,” Calix said. “Let’s go.” So the kids all lined up at the shore and watched as Calix and Zevia dived into the water headfirst, swimming towards the cave. They swam into it, under the hard rock, no air bubble above yet. Zevia couldn’t hold her breath long enough, though, and so she swam out to the open water again and surfaced, Calix nowhere in sight.
“What happened? Who surfaced?” Mocha asked, and Arca responded.
“It’s Zevia! I don’t know where Calix is.. Zevia, what happened?”
“Dunno - he kept swimming, I had to get some air. But I can’t swim underwater that long. He can, I’m sure he’s fine…”
They all waited for him to come up, but he didn’t. Not yet.

Calix was being dragged up to the bank, inside the cave, coughing and spluttering. His ears were flat back, his feathers and fur drenched. His eyes were still closed. When he tried to open them, he was almost blinded by fuzzy lights. He tried to get up and gentle paws pushed him down.
“Shhh… it’s alright, little one. We’re here to help.”
“Wha-what? Who are you? Where am I?”
“It’s alright. We’re here to help,” the voice repeated. All at once, Calix felt a warm, tingly feeling, spreading from his chest to the rest of him. He opened his eyes, all the tired and drowned feeling going away. Sitting up, he coughed a few times. Turning, he saw the body to whom the voice belonged. She was beautiful, a golden Plumerian, her feathers shone silver like moonlight. But where her back legs should have been, there was a…. a tail? A fish tail, sparkling silver-blue, fins and scales and all. She was a beautiful Merplumerian, like the legends! But Calix thought he must be hallucinating… they didn’t exist, did they?
“It’s alright, little one. I’ve healed you. You’ll be safe now. Would you like to stay a little bit? I don’t know if you’d like our food..” She giggled. “We’re veggie-vege… vegetarians, I think that’s it, yes, and according to older records, your kind don’t usually eat like us. Sorry for my English, we’re more accustomed to speaking our native language.”
“That’s… that’s okay… uhm… wait.. What!?” Calix looked down on himself and saw bubble markings. They were in his fur, on his feathers, and when he looked down at his reflection in the water - his eyes - one of his eyes was white, and they both had bubble markings! What?
“Oh yes, I’m sorry… that’s the only side effect of our healing… We all have them,” said the merplumerian. And sure enough, upon closer inspection, Calix saw that she had the same bubble markings, just in a tone that matched her fur and tail color. “But you should be getting back now. It is not good for mortal plumerians like you to lurk here, in our magic, for too long. I will escort you.”
Calix was too stunned to speak, and so he let the merplumerian grab his paw and guide him through the water. Her magic must be working somehow, since he could keep his eyes open without any irritation at all, and he didn’t have to hold his breath while she was touching him. They swam for a few minutes, and finally they saw daylight above them. The merplumerian stayed under, though, keeping Calix for a moment.
“T-thank you,” he said, though underwater.
“You are welcome, little one. Maybe someday we shall meet again, and may you be ever safe in water. I give you my blessing,” she said in her silky, golden voice. She touched his ears with her other paw, and the warm glow spread through Calix again. She let go and he instantly needed air, resurfacing with a gasp. Looking down in the water again, he could not see her, but in the distance, by the cave, he saw a shimmering tail flip and send a spray above the water.

Swimming back to his friends on the sand, they stared at him and his new bubble markings, his white eye. It was not blind, but it was different. Arca and Zevia pulled him up, and they all started bombarding him with questions.
    “What happened?”
    “Are you okay?”
“Why do you have those bubbles on your fur?”
“Why were you down there so long?”
    “Why’s your eye white?!”
“We were so worried! C’mon, we’ve got to get you home!”
“Woah, woah, woah, one question at a time,” Calix said. “I… I don’t remember what happened. I don’t know how I got these markings. C’mon, let’s just go home…”

Calix never told them exactly what happened; they never knew why he was so good on the swim team, winning every race. They never knew how he could hold his breath so long, seemingly breathing underwater.

And that’s the story of how Calix got his bubble markings.
