What is a Hummingbee Pup?

A Hummingbee pup is a mix between a hummingbird and a domestic dog. Hummingbee pups live mostly in warmer environments such as the southern United States, along both the west and east coasts, Mexico, and South America. The height of a full grown Hummingbee can be up to about the size of a Golden Retriever, most are usually smaller. Not all Hummingbee pups are born with wings, which is just as common as those born with them. Hummingbees with wings are able to fly for short distances and only up to about five feet in the air before their wings get tired. Their diet consists of nectar from flowers, most nuts and seeds, and insects for protien.

They called my name out... mine. I stood there, rooted to the spot as prickles of apprehension flowed through me, from my pawpads to the tip of my beak. This must be wrong, a mistake in printing or something... How could it be right? Head of the Volleyball team? Certainly not. I had failed the test miserably, or at least that's how it had felt. So how on Earth could they have chosen me? I certainly didn't try the most...

I shook my head and headed down to the front. One of the other applicants who tried out for the team glared poisonously at me from the bleachers. She was the shoe-in, her friends had told me, that she was going to be captain, paws-down. Her friends murmured around her, worriedly, trying to placate her. After all, being both the most popular and the prettiest Hummingbee in school did have some drawbacks... It turned her into a monstrous beast (although not literally!) and she tended to lash out at whoever happened to be closest when she didn't get what she wanted. Whatever the case, what they told her must have been what she wanted to hear, because her malicious smile found its way to my eyes and I nearly squirmed in my skin.

I shouldn't be here... I shouldn't be here... Not me.

They continued announcing names and one by one, they trickled down like flood water. My team... mates. Calling them my team would be a lie. I have to keep reminding myself that I don't deserve to be their leader.
The most popular Hummingbee stood next to me, her ruff freshly made up. She leaned in and whispered almost imperceptibly to me, "You know, I don't think I can forgive you for this one, Fabie." She glanced at me from down her polished beak. "So, I don't think I will. You'll be wanting to step down soon... Otherwise, I'll just have to step on you. Captain's Assistant sounds simply awful, don't you think? Awful like... you?" She tittered and looked away from me, beaming for the group picture, as if she hadn't said anything at all. I was stone-faced, but that probably made me look stoic or something dumb like that. I could have rolled my eyes.

I took my result sheet back, as the rest of the team finished congratulating each other.

It read out something like I was accepted as Captain because there was still room for me to grow into, but also because I was already one of the top positions. I wasn't the best I could possibly be yet, but with training and practice I could easily become the best Volleyball player in the entire school, even fit for the Co-Ed or State teams. I clenched my fist in disbelief and my form crinkled. I was actually good at something?

Well, if that's the case... I thought, Then it should be no problem to take her challenge on. I tried to imitate her earlier grin, but it came out more like a grimace, from the reaction of the other Hummingbees. They stirred on, murmuring to her about how I should be assistant, but I couldn't hear them. It was like my blood was boiling and they were on a distant planet, the clouds of adrenaline sharpening my perception.

They better believe I'm Captain, because this game's about to get started.
