It will never leave its skull behind because: His mom gave him it before she was forced to abandon him because she couldn't take care of him. He holds onto it because he knows his mother loves him, even though she couldn't take care of him.

When this Humming Gator was little, it was considered a runt and was bullied by the other humming gators, even his own siblings. He left his family to find peace from the taunts, and accidentally wandered into the desert. He was disoriented and could not see straight, and thought that a large skull was a piece of food. He attempted to eat it, but in the process broke many of his teeth. He cried in pain, but noticed the skull could protect him. He decided to put it on his head and continue on. Since he was defenseless without most of his teeth, he had no other way of defense. Once, he ran into a cougar. Seeing it try and eat him, and lacking teeth, he turned to his skull. As the cougar pounced and aimed for a bite on magnusses head, he face his skull to the mouth of the cougar and broke all of the cats teeth, making it bound off in fear. He has learned that the skull can protect him, and has had it ever since.
