Week 1 Report

Week 1 Report

My first week with Ranger went off pretty swell. We've accomplished a lot and I'm proud to call him my horse. Here's what we've accomplished:

~Gaining trust
~Wearing a halter
~Being led around
~Walked with other horses
~Communicating friendly with other horses
~Companionship
~And gentleness

Were still though having problems with getting him to stop kicking his stall. We all know though that this is going to stop. Hopefully soon we'll make an improvement.

Day 8

Postby ScarletFeather11 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:15 pm

Day 8

Ranger nipped at Dixie swiftly when she was trying to groom him, only earning himself a swift bite to his ear to punish him. I couldn't help but laugh slightly watching the two out on the field. He only snorted and folded his ears back as she kept grooming him. I was pretty glad he was getting along well with other horses. He's done so well his first week here. He's my boy, my big spoiled one.

"Is he doing alright?" my dad asked as he walked up beside me to lean on the gate.

I looked over with a nod, "He's doing really well with Dixie. I'm glad she's doing well with him too. So far all of the horses have done alright with him and it makes me happy about it."

"Good. I'm glad to hear," he smiled and kissed my temple.

"So have you called Dr. Claire?" I asked after a few moments of silence.

"No not yet. I want you to call her December. You're old enough and Ranger is your responsibility dear," he answered as he looked at me.

I nodded in response then watched him leave. I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and looked through my contacts for Dr. Claire's, our vet, number. I dialed it up and waited for her receptionist to answer. Soon enough he answered.

"Hello, this is Ricky Taylor of Dr. Claire's Equine Veterinarian Care speaking. How may I help you?" Ricky, the receptionist and Dr. Claire's husband answered.

"Hey Ricky it's December Dawson, Jacob Dawson's daughter," I answered gently as I leaned against the gate.

"Oh hey December. I didn't recognize your voice. What's the matter?" he asked.

"I recently last week took in a mustang from the 2014 Mustang Makeover held at Cottonwood Ranch and he's got a horrible problem with kicking in his stall. Do you think maybe you can schedule me an appointment with Dr. Claire? I want her to see if maybe he has something going on inside of him maybe? I just can't have my gelding hurt himself," I answered softly.

"Of course December. I'll get her to come over soon. I have an appointment open on July 10th. Does that work for you?"

I nodded as I replied, "That works just great Ricky. What times are open?"

"We can get her to come out at 3:30pm."

"That works for me. Thank you again Ricky and tell Dr. Claire I'll see her soon."

"You're very welcome and I will December. Have fun and be careful with that mustang of yours."

With that he hung up and I did the same. Soon enough we'd have Mr. Ranger figured out.

Day 9

Postby ScarletFeather11 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:15 pm

Day 9

Ranger quietly followed Night as I rode him, a lead rope clipped onto Ranger's halter. I wanted him to get used to be in the gaits of English riding. So far Ranger has been doing pretty well. I'm proud of him. As I looked at him I started realizing the big boy needed a hair cut. His mane and tail were getting too long and sort of knotted pretty bad in places. I already got my dad to lend me the scissors and comb to work on his mane and tail tonight.

I wanted his mane cut sort of like a zebra's mane and his tail like a draft horse's. It was only for the summer so he'd have his long flowing mane back soon. It's be perfect for a while and he wouldn't get so hot. He wouldn't mess it up either in the mud as much. I wanted him to be different than the rest.

After a while of continuously leading around Ranger and riding Night I set Ranger out into the field. I rode Night into the barn, untacked him, washed him off, then set him out into the pasture as well. I walked back to Ranger with a sweet whistle, "Ranger."

Ranger swiftly perked his ears and trotted over to me happily. I clipped his lead line back on then walked him around a few times before leading him into the barn to where Ren was with scissors, comb, small bucket of water, and a small sponge. I tied up Ranger then looked at Ren, "You ready?"

He nodded as he patted Ranger, "Indeed I am. Now how are we cutting his mane and tail?"

"I want his mane like a zebra's and his tail like a draft horse's. Can we do that?" I asked as I started washing out Ranger's mane.

"Yeah we can do that but do you want his forelock messed with at all?" Ren asked as he washed his tail.

"No just leave that alone. He doesn't mess his forelock up a lot," I answered as I finished wetting Ranger's mane.

I grabbed the scissors and started cutting his mane, chuckling softly as Ranger whinnied curiously and flicked around his ears. I smiled and kissed his cheek to praise him for staying still. I kept cutting his mane until I had it like I wanted. He shook his head swiftly when I was done but boy was he handsome with his cropped mane. I leaned down next to help Ren cut his tail. Soon enough we had that done as well and Ranger was all ready to go.

I rubbed his head then led him back out to the field. He whinnied and pranced beside me, only making me laugh. He was one heck of a sweetheart and jokester. I patted his neck before turning him loose and walked over to Ren, kissing him gently, "Thanks for the help."

He kissed me back with a smile, "No problem December. It was fun helping you."

I grinned and walked with him around the horse fields for a while with him before turning in for the night, rather content with everything along with Ranger's hair cut.

Day 10

Postby ScarletFeather11 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:15 pm

Day 10

I was out working in the garden with my dad and Ren. We had Ranger hooked up to the plow to get the garden ready for some more crops to eat in the fall. I had horse treats in my back pocket to praise Ranger every now and then for being such a hard worker. I whistled and got him to keep moving when he slowed to a stop. I felt bad for pushing him hard but he had to keep moving. We couldn't stop so much if we wanted to get the garden done today.

I looked over to watch as Ren whistled and got Luck to move quicker while dad got Bo to do the same. I leaned against the plow handles as I kept Ranger moving. I tapped the handles gently with a long yawn, hoping night would fall soon since I was so tired. I got up early this morning to do my chores and then this evening I had to plow and wash off Ranger. He was good about being washed though so I wouldn't have a problem with him.

I slowed Ranger after a while for a small break. I walked to his head and rubbed his nose gently as I gave him a treat, "You're doing good boy. Just a little while longer then I'll hose you down and let you into the pasture for a while. You can cool off and relax that way without doing anymore work for a while."

He whinnied gently as a thank you then started pulling the plow once more when I whistled after getting to the handle bars. I yawned again as I kept working with Ranger. He kept pulling the plow like a good boy. Eventually we finished working and I clipped his halter on after untacking and unhitching him from the plow. I led him to the shower and clipped him to the hook in the shower. I turned the water on and rinsed off his pelt first.

"Does that feel good boy?" I asked gently as I kept rinsing him off.

He whinnied in reply as he relaxed under the water. I smiled with a soft giggle when I noticed him enjoying his bath. I turned the hose off to started soaping him up. I whistled softly as I got his coat all sudsy and bubbly. I patted his neck and scrubbed it all in. After a few minutes I rinsed all the soap off him gently then gave him a treat and led him out to the field. I kissed his cheek before taking his halter off and setting him free into his pasture. He soon went to his water trough and sipped on the water while I walked back out into the garden to start planting seeds for the plants.

Day 11

Postby ScarletFeather11 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:15 pm

Day 11

I was up by noon, cleaning out all the stalls in the stable. Ranger was quietly looking around from his field, checking everything out. I smiled softly at him before going back to working. Ren had gotten the mats for the stall and we were going to install them as soon as we were both done with our chores for today. I had about three stalls left and Ren was fixing a part on the tractor so he'd be done soon.

Eventually I finished up and walked out to the garage to see how Ren was doing. I grabbed two waters from the fridge inside the office first before making my way up there. I slid inside and walked over to where Ren was, "Hey. You almost done?"

He looked over from standing up, gratefully taking the water, "Yeah I'm done. Just finished actually. What about you?"

I nodded as I sipped on my water, "I'm all done for today. I'm just waiting on you."

He nodded then slid his hand into mine before walking down to the stable to go start on Ranger's stall. I smiled softly and laid my head on his shoulder as we walked. Ren grinned and kissed my head softly before heading inside the stable. I led him to Ranger's stall then let him go to get the mats. Soon enough after a while Ren came back with the mats. We slipped inside the stall and started working on them.

"So it's the right wall right?" Ren asked as he looked over at me.

I nodded, "Yeah. He kicks there all the time."

He nodded in return then with my help we started working on the stall. After a while we soon had it installed. At least it was done before Fourth of July in two days. My family always hosts a large party and shoots fireworks every year. It's a tradition and we wouldn't have this done in a mess like that.

"Were done right?" I asked as I looked at my boyfriend.

He nodded as he shut the stall door, "Indeed we are. Hopefully we can test it out on him soon."

I nodded my head then walked with him out of the stall to the house to cool off for a while.

Day 12

Postby ScarletFeather11 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:16 pm

Day 12

Ranger shook his head softly as I brushed out his pelt. I was getting him all dulled up for a small parade in town. We've already tested him with loud noises and such and he seems alright with it. He trusts me and that's all that matters. He's quiet and reserved and isn't phased any by a lot of people. I'm surprised but he's been a good gelding since he first arrived. Dad has already said if he starts acting up to take him out immediately and let him calm down before taking him back in. If he acts up again we'd take him home.

We did the parade every year with a few of our horses. Paradon and Kimberly always go together, dressed in a patriotic costume. Dylan takes Diesel and does dressage and other tricks while they ride. Bo and Luck pull a carriage with our mayor or some model from around here. Dixie is the flag carrier with Emma and Night is beautifully dressed in a costume fit for him with Ren leading him around. Lastly, Pepper and Zoey do the same as Dylan and Diesel. The rest of our horses stay behind or we use for back up in case any get hurt. I was just leading Ranger around in his dulled up costume.

Ranger was quiet as we loaded him up into the trailer after Paradon. He didn't kick or buck, just did what he was told. I gave him a treat as I praised him. He whinnied softly then went to eating from the hay bag while I climbed into the truck with Ren, Kimberly, and Dylan. Ren drove while I sat in the passenger seat and Kimberly and Dylan sat in the back. I was pretty excited for my first year of the parade with a new horse. Last year I rode Dixie and now this year I got to work with Ranger.

~Few Hours Later~

I patted Ranger gently as he flicked his docked tail while I finished the final touches on him. He flicked his ears as I kissed his cheek, "Come on boy."

He didn't object, too curious about everything going on around him. I smiled and patted his neck as we walked after Ren and Night. I was soon leading him after everyone when the parade started. Ranger was high stepping with his neck arched, a way he liked to show off. I laughed softly and kept leading him. He whinnied at passing people excitedly as I kept walking him. He happily flicked around his tail as I kept walking him.

~Hours Later~

I took off Ranger's costume and led him back up into the trailer once the parade was over. I yawned shut up the trailer and got up in the truck. I was asleep by the time we left, tired from a great night with my family, friends, and horses.

Day 13

Postby ScarletFeather11 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:16 pm

Day 13

Ranger looked up as cars piled up into the driveway. He trotted over to the gate when I walked over, my hair in two braids and myself in jean shorts and a red, white, and blue tie-dye tank top. I patted his neck gently and kissed his nose, "Hey boy. You alright?"

He snorted as he twirled his ears, silently watching all the people chatter and kids run around. I climbed the fence and stood in the field with my horse, "It's just a party boy. They won't hurt you."

It took him a few minutes to calm down before he shook his mane out and went back to grazing. I rubbed his back gently as I murmured soothing words to him. It was getting late and the wind was a little chilly. I slid out of the field and grabbed Ranger's Fourth of July blanket. It was a simple blanket with an American Flag design to get him into the spirit of things. He swished his docked tail and lifted his head as he watched me strap on the blanket.

I kissed his cheek softly, "Be good and I'll come out here before we start fireworks to check on you."

I jogged out of the field and straight over to my family and friends. I enjoyed my time, every now and then checking on my horse.

~Hours Later~

I walked out to the field with Ren to check on Ranger. Ranger was grazing, not minding the fireworks. He lifted his head softly to watch me carefully. I reached my hand out gently to rub his muzzle. I smiled softly at him then disappeared off with Ren to go watch the fireworks together.

Day 14

Postby ScarletFeather11 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:16 pm

Day 14

I cleaned up around the yard and stable while Ren worked with Ranger in his stall. We were trying to get him working today but honestly it's a lot of work. At least we have the vet coming soon in a few days so maybe we'll fix him up hopefully. I walked over into the barn just in time to see Ranger start kicking.

"Ranger woah calm down boy," I cooed as I jogged over to help Ren pull the large gelding out.

Ranger squealed and shook out his head as we pulled him out gently. I rubbed his neck gently as I calmed him down. I felt terrible for him being so scared and nervous of his stall. I patted his back gently once he was calm and took him for a few laps around the barn to calm down.

"How many more days till the vet is coming?" Ren asked as he walked beside me.

I sighed before checking my phone to see the date, "It's July 5th so five days since she's coming on the 10th of July."

He nodded and helped me keep walking Ranger around, trying to keep him calm and relaxed. Every time we walked him into his stall he bucked and we ended up having to take him for more laps around the stable. I eventually gave up for today and set him back out into the field to graze. I patted him softly and kissed his cheek before letting him go to relax for a while.

Day 15

Postby ScarletFeather11 » Mon Jul 07, 2014 8:49 am

Day 15

I brushed out my hair gently as I looked in the mirror. Ren was taking me out today while Ranger was having a break from working on his stall. I pulled on my clothes then brushed my teeth and jogged out of the house after pulling a pair of shoes on. I waited out on the front porch for Ren, soon walking over when he brought out Diesel and Sea. I thanked him as he helped me up onto Diesel. I leaned back into the saddle as we rode side by side, "So how was Ranger this morning?"

"He was great actually," Ren replied.

I nodded as I listened to him, "That's good. I'll wash him later."

"I already gave him a shower," Ren chuckled as he looked over.

"Oh," I giggled sweetly with a nod as we rode together on the trails.

I patted Diesel gently before eventually turning her around and making my way back to the farm with Ren. We got off the horses and untacked them. I washed off the two horses with Ren then took them off out into the field. I walked over to Ren and walked with him out to see Ranger. I cooed softly as we sat on the gate, "Ranger."

Ranger lifted his head and trotted over swiftly to enjoy my rubbing hands in his fur. I smiled gently and rubbed his head softly, "Hey boy."

Ren kissed my cheek as we played with Ranger, "You love him don't you?"

I looked over with a nod, "I love him a lot. He's a sweet horse."

"I know he is," Ren chuckled softly and continued patting Ranger.
