Short story:
Bucky looked around himself, breathing in the tangy sea air. Where was he? Ah yes, he was on his pirate ship! Well, it wasn't his. A small frown passed across his face as he thought of his cruel captain who called him a 'landlubber' and 'prissy'. He would show him - he was much braver than that old stink face! Calling the captain names made Bucky feel a little better, so he set back to work scrubbing the floors. The other pirates were singing a shanty song Bucky felt as if he should know but somehow didn't. He put it down to being the seventeenth mate of nineteen sailors - three of which were cats, one of which beat him.
"Boat ahoy!" came a loud shout. Bucky looked up in excitement. He liked seeing the boats! The captain began to bark out orders. This perked Bucky up a bit - he'd been premoted from 'stay below in the cabin out of sight' to 'flank the attacking party'! Bucky raced over to the attackers, a bunch of burly Plumerians with gold teeth and tattoos. Bucky bounced around in nervous excitement. His first real raid! With an excited yelp, he helped let down the gangplank and charged onto the other boat. Suddenly, he stopped in shock. It was a cruise ship with little baby Plumerians in it!
"No, stop! There's childre-" he began, but a neighbouring pirate shut him up with a fierce glare. Bucky managed to herd most of the children into a cabin.
"Where's mummy?"
"I want Pooh bear!"
"Me hungry!"
The children bombarded him with questions. Bucky began to cry for the poor children, and he was sobbing so much he didn't notice the captain sneak up behind him.
"A pirate crying?" the plumerian sneered, his moustache bristling. "Out! Get out!" he shouted.
"Captain, there's land 'ere! Should we chuck 'im off there?"
"Yes, thank you Second Mate,"
Bucky wobbled along the gangplank to many jeers. He jumped off onto a tiny island, and his top lip quivered. How was he going to get home now? Before he started 'eye sweating', he saw a little bird fly over to him. Somehow, it seemed familiar, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
"Hey, little parrot," he said, sniffing back his tears. "What's your name?"
The parrot gave him a look as if to say, 'How should I know?'
"I'll call you Icarus then," continued Bucky happily. "Now, Icarus, how do we get home?"
Icarus squawked and flew over to the west side of an island. There lay a huge ice cream tub, which Bucky was sure hadn't been there before.
"Wow, thanks Icarus!" Bucky clambered into the tub, and found there was a little ledge inside. "Hop in!" he called, as he began to drift off. Icarus flew over and perched on the ledge, and the two friends sailed off into the sunset. Suddenly, Icarus began to squawk, and squawk, and squawk-
Bucky woke up with a start. He found himself clutching his squeaky parrot toy so hard it was squeaking constantly. He relaxed his grip and clambered out of bed, putting on his favourite dress up outfit: his captain's hat, his bandana and his peg leg - a clever piece of apparatus designed by his mother when he was young to hide his crooked leg. Leaning out of his porthole-like window, he breathed in the fresh air. Not quite sea air - he lived over an hour away from the nearest beach - but still, there was a nice breeze.
"Perfect weather for sailing," he mused happily.
He looked in the mirror and shuddered - he forgot his eyepatch! After that experience with a knife, a toaster and an overdone piece of toast, he'd never been able to look in the mirror again.. ahh, that was better! Pinging on his eyepatch, he surveyed himself.
"Very good, captain!" he said to himself.Grinning confidently, he walked out of his house. He was ready for anything!
