Name: Ambrosia
Gender: Female
Backstory: Ambrosia doesn't remember her parents, or whether she had any siblings. Her earliest memory is from when she was 7 months old, scrounging for food along the coast when a human girl found her and took her home in a fishbowl. "I'll name you Ambrosia," the girl told her. "The food of the ancient Greek gods." Ambrosia sensed, in the girl's arms, that she was loved. She purred and stuck her head out of the glass, rubbing her little cheek against the girl's finger.
For a long time Ambrosia was kept hidden in the girl's room. Her family was poor and the girl knew that if her father found out about Ambrosia, he would toss her out. For 5 months she was kept hidden. Then, when Ambrosia was about 1 year old, the unthinkable happened. The girl's father discovered Ambrosia's existence and demanded with his daughter to know "what this filthy creature was doing under his roof." The girl begged her father to let Ambrosia stay, which only made him angrier. "We can't afford this!" he thundered. "I'm dumping this foul cat into the garbade!"
"Daddy, no!" the girl begged.
"It's for our own good, Elianna," he growled. He strode out the door, holding Ambrosia by the scruff, down to the Dumpster nearest them. The girl, Elianna, followed him with tears rushing down her face, begging him to stop, but he refused.
At that moment, Elianna and Ambrosia both screamed, a horrible, high-pitched sound of terror. Seeing the open Dumpster rushing toward her and unable to breathe out of water, Ambrosia closed her eyes and prepared to plunge into the disgusting, choking mess.
Suddenly, there was a bright flash and, just as Ambrosia hit the garbage, she felt the soothing sensation of water all around her. She thrashed her paws and tail, trying to swim up to the surface to see what was going on. She was back in the fishbowl, and Elianna and her father were staring at her with expressions of shock. There was also a woman standing next to them with one arm outstretched, pointed in her direction. The woman had pale skin and dark flowing hair in ripples down her back. She was an enchantress.
The strange woman smiled and then pointed at Elianna's father, who simply vanished. She took Elianna's hand and the two disappeared. Just before she did, though, the enchantress uttered a spell, and Ambrosia found herself in a tank, inside a room lit by torches. A few minutes later, Elianna came into the room and smiled as she saw her mercat there. Turns out, the enchantress, Ezra, was Elianna's mother. Elianna was beginning her training as an enchantress, following in the footsteps of her mother, and Ambrosia was to be her "familiar," or companion animal. As Elianna whispered the story to Ambrosia, she purred in happiness. Elianna then told Ambrosia that if they did well in training, the two of them would be granted the ability to talk to each other with their thoughts so that Elianna could understand Ambrosia. Ambrosia purred even harder. Her life was shaping up well for being just one year old. ~
