Cain
(A play on words- Candy Cane- Cane- Cain)

Gender:
Male
Story:
Cain had just come in from the icy winter, the snow was almost chest-high and it made his hooves hurt and his horns ache to be out in the cold like that. He grumpily tossed the sticks he'd gathered into his small hearth and twitched his velvety nose, settling on the floor opposite the fire while he undid his tack. He slid it off and huffed a sigh. Stupid snowy farmwork, he thought irritatedly. He was just getting warm and cozy, munching on a peppermint and drinking some cocoa when he heard a knock at the door. His ear twitched and he gave an annoyed grumble, getting to his striped hooves, he peered out the window slats. A mass of red velvet and white fur filled his vision. I swear, if this is Prancer's idea of a joke.... he muttered under his breath before opening the door, not bothering to plaster a fake smile on his face. He looked into the face of the jolly, red-cheeked, overweight man in a suit. Santa Claus. "Mr. Claus," he said formally, dipping his head. "What brings you way out here?" he asked in a disinterested tone, not inviting him in.
"Well, Cain, you see, Rudolph has taken ill and he can't fly tonight. I hear you have excellent vision, and I know you like to fly-"
Cain's eyes grew hard. "Who told you that?" He asked crisply.
"Prancer."
Cain dropped any pretense of friendliness. "And I suppose you wanted me to fill in for Ruddy, is that it?" He sneered. Santa let out a splutter of surprise. Cain pawed the hard wooden floor and lowered his head threateningly. "I'm not your slave, and I'm no friend of you or your reindeer, and unless you want my candy antlers poking holes in your precious suit, I suggest you get off my land right now, and never come back. Not even for Christmas. Rudolph can suck it up and fly for his team like he should be doing." Cain growled, his eyes flashing.
Santa backed away, slightly horrified that any creature could be so hostile- especially to him. He shut his mouth grimly and nodded, turning and marching back out into the snow. Cain shut the door and went back to his fire, laying down, staring bitterly at his tack.
They knew exactly what that meant to me.

History:
(To explain why he's so angry in the story)
Snow was falling, settling on the ground like a heavy blanket. Two animals played in the snow- a young reindeer and a young Deersert. They laughed and tumbled over through the new snow, best of friends.
Cain had always wanted to be part of Santa's sled team, and his best friend Prancer went for tryouts and got on. Cain was happy for his friend, but a bit put out. When Prancer told him there was still one opening left, Cain immediately began training. He trained night and day, not tiring, because he was a colt with a dream. A dream to be on the team. He had one problem though- He wasn't a reindeer. He couldn't fly.
Prancer got the other members of the sled team together and they snickered, devising a plan.
Cain walked to the meeting place, his breath puffing gently out in white clouds in the quiet of the snowy forest. He was wearing his new tack, Prancer had asked him to bring it. He wondered what Prancer was doing. He'd just said he had a surprise for Cain.
Reaching the meeting place, he saw all eight of the chosen team members sitting in a half circle, waiting for him. Prancer stepped forward, a small brown bag of oats in his mouth. He set them down and told Cain to eat them. Cain did as he was told, wondering. As soon as he finished, he felt really light. He looked to Prancer with wide eyes and Prancer nodded. Cain leapt into the air, and his heart soared along with his hooves. He was flying. He could be on the team.
The next day were the tryouts, and Cain stepped up with a pounding heart, his hooves dragging, weighed down with excitement- or so he thought. When his turn came up, he performed all the checks with tack and harnesses. Then it was time for the flight check. He leaped elegantly, proudly into the frosty air, his striped hooves clearing the snow- and then he fell face-first in a snowdrift. He couldn't fly. The reindeer all erupted into laughter. The special oats only worked 24 hours, which is why they had to eat them everyday, but they hadn't bothered to tell Cain.
Cain heard them laughing, saw Prancer rolling in the snow with the others and felt tears stinging his eyes in the icy wind. He shut his eyes and ran from the course. He never went back.

Why?:
I know everyone else is going to have the same story about how he accepted. Cain's a very different Deersert, and I don't think he should be the same, or be everything everyone thinks he should be. He is his own Deer.

    Deerssert Name: Mister Blitzen II
    Gender: buck, male, brute, masculine
Story: “Now, now, Mister Blitzen,” Miz Elf chides. “Your fur's all a-tangle! Sit still, boy, so I can get the knots out o’ there!” Impatiently, the young buck squirms still under the elf's brush. “Miz, I wanna go and see them!” Miz Elf tsks. “Boy, you’za gonna hafta learn some patience!” Tonight is the night Mister Blitzen had been dreaming of for months. The chance to see the real deal, the legends. Everyone else had mocked him for his candy-cane antlers but, oho, he still managed to get a chance to see Santa himself and his team head off into the night, delivering toys. Finally, the wizened elf yanks the last tangle out of his fur and Mister Blitzen speeds off out of the gingerbread hut, bounding through the gently falling snow. The legends! The real deals! The actual reindeer that pulled the actual sleigh! Mister Blitzen is beside himself by the time he gets into the crowd of spectators. He nervously shuffles his front hooves, hoping he doesn't make a fool of himself when the team goes by. Not like he has a stuffed representation of every member of the team... that's crazy talk. Finally, the stags emerge from the massive gingerbread stables. Their harnesses jingle merrily as they take each step and they hold their heads high, proudly marching in pairs. But... something's wrong. As they go by, Mister Blitzen counts only eight reindeer. Where's Blitzen? No one else seems to notice. Frantically, Mister Blitzen looks around. What will happen to all the boys and girls? They won't get their presents! A roar sounds among the crowd and there come the man himself, Santa Claus. Mister Blitzen pushes his way through the crowd and skitters up to him. Is he really as jolly as they say? Hopefully so. “M-Mr. Claus, if you please,” Mister Blitzen stammers. “HEY! GET OUT OF THE WAY, PEPPERMINT-HEAD!” A voice shouts. Other reindeer shout their protests, but Santa silences them with a hand. He bends down to look at the buck better. “Yes, Mister Blitzen, what is it?” he inquires. “W-where's Blitzen? The real one, not me,” the deer replies. Santa straightens up, looking around. An elf emerges from the stables. “Sir Blitzen has the sniffles!” he announces. “No flight for him, he has to stay here.” Oh, dear. Whatever could they do? All those boys and girls, waiting patiently for their toys, but a sled can't be pulled with just eight! Santa frowns, in thought. “Say, Mister Blitzen, why don't you fill in” he says. “M-me, sir?” Mister Blitzen stutters, in shock, a grin growing on his face. “Aye, you. Now go get your harness on, we've got toys to deliver!” Mister Blitzen dashes in and out of the stables, donning a harness just like the ones his idols are wearing. A few elves attach him to the sleigh. Donner gives him a reassuring smile as the buck is put beside him. Rudolph turns and does the same, and from behind he hears “You'll do great, kid,” and “Don't be nervous,” from Comet and Cupid. He can even hear the encouraging words of Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and Vixen from way behind him. "Alright now, lads," Santa says, climbing into the sleigh. The reindeer, including Mister Blitzen, toss their heads excitedly. The big man in red flicks the reins, setting the team in motion.
“Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer and Vixen! On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and Mister Blitzen!”

Just as I was thinking I wasn't going to try for any of these Deerserts I came across this gorgeous guy. o.o

Username: 4dogowner
Name: Cane
Gender: This Deersert strikes me as a handsome fella. <3
Story:
"It appears that all that carrot cake really did a number on Rudolph. He has an awful tummy ache." The North Pole's head veterinarian, a short, cheerful fellow by the name of Cedar, patted the clearly nauseated red nosed Reindeer on the head, slipping his stethoscope around his neck. Santa Claus worriedly scratched his white beard. "You're sure he won't be able to fly tonight?" Cedar smiled apologetically up at him. "Rudolph will be fine, but he's not going anywhere at least until tomorrow."

Noticing Santa's concerned expression, he added hopefully,"Maybe you won't even need him tonight!" Just then, the pager on the nearby table buzzed to life, and the shrill voice of an elf came through with the Night's weather forecast. "Heavy fog is forming along the ocean, and snow storms are expected in several northern European countries." As the voice died out, Cedar shrugged. "Well good luck then." and strolled off to conduct check ups on the rest of the reindeer.

Santa sighed deeply, murmuring worriedly,"What am I going to do?" He scowled at the guilty looking Rudolph, though the miserable reindeer with the swollen belly was hard to stay upset with. Santa chuckled, stretching forward to scratch the Reindeer's ears. "A bit too much of a sweet tooth, eh? You and me both.." He chuckled, and right on cue a sweet, minty scent began wafting through the stable. Rudolph sat up and wiggled in his hay bed, and Santa turned to greet the source of the pepperminty aroma.

A small Reindeer trotted into the stable and up to Santa, his candy cane hooves clicking on the wooden floor as he tippy toed happily. Santa chuckled and gave the sweet smelling, doglike deer a pat. "How are you Cane?" With a quiet grunt, the Deersert licked the small bit of Santa's face that wasn't covered in hair, causing his cheeks to go red as he chuckled. Santa glanced up towards the open stable door as something shiny hit his eye. Suddenly, he realized that the sunlight was reflecting off of the deer's shiny peppermint antlers. He grinned broadly. "You've got reflector antlers my boy!" He chuckled to himself, simply amused, as the deer strolled over to Rudolph. As he wandered into the shade, his eyes began to brighten, his pupils widening to compensate for the much lower light.

Santa paid little attention, but Rudolph noticed. He grunted, but Santa didn't notice. He tried again, to no avail. As a last resort, Rudolph forced himself onto his feet, panting from the effort of lifting his cake filled self, and walked up to Santa. He grunted loudly, and shook his head in Cane's direction, and finally the bearded man got his inference. "You think he can see in the dark?" Cane blinked curiously at them from the shadows, his eyes still bright. Santa raised an eyebrow, then grinned as an idea popped into his head.

He stood up, shutting all the doors and windows of the stable and leaving it pitch black. As Rudolph's nose began to light the room in an eery red glow, Santa stuck a hand over it to prevent it. He called out,"Cane! Bring me a carrot for Rudolph please!" The sound of hoof steps and the pepperminty scent crossed the stable, right to where the carrots were stored. After a bit of rummaging, Santa could hear crunching, and sighed. Cane never could resist a snack. And finally Cane trotted back to him, a carrot between his teeth and an proud expression on his face. Santa grinned broadly. Maybe he didn't need Rudolph.

Eight reindeer peered in awe down the line, all the way to the small, mint scented deer being hitched up at the front. Cane stood proudly, his head tall and his eyes bright and eager to show what he's got. The rest of the team seemed rather concerned with their new team member. Isn't he too small to lead? What if Prancer runs him over? I mean he never looks where he's going.. Is he big enough to properly maneuver the team? Does he even know how to fly?

As Santa finished harnessing Cane, he glanced down the line, The rest of the Reindeer were clearly agitated, and he admittedly was a bit concerned too. He hadn't had time for a test run with Cane, and could only hope for the best from the confident Deersert. Climbing into the sleigh, Santa Claus took the reigns in his hands and awaited his elves' sign that all was ready. After one last check to be sure that the sack of gifts was secured, and that all of the Reindeer were properly equipped, the lead elf flashed Santa a thumbs up. Santa took a deep breath, then flicked the reigns. Cane snorted eagerly, clicked his hooves, and took off at a galloping start. Everyone's breath stopped short as Cane boldly leaped into the air...And flew.

Awww......So cute! My favorite Deessert!

Username: emmpie
Deerssert Name: Peppy
Gender: Male
Story: One day peppy decided to take a stroll to the park and he saw a big candy cane fall rom the sky right after he sat down at a park bench. YUM! He thought. He started licking up and didn't notice that he was growing candy cane antlers and many other cane cane things. After he licked the last drop, (Which took an hour or so) he looked at himself in the pond. "Yikes!" he exclaimed, "What have I done!" Soon other deeserts called him Peppy so his named changed too. At least he loved peppermint!

Deerssert Name: Arbex

Story:

It was a pleasantly brisk winter day. Snow lay on the ground in fluffy white drifts, easily able to be moved and played in. The light tinkling of jingle bells could be heard along the gentle whisking sound of a sleigh being pulled. Proudly pulling a bright red sleigh was Arbex, a handsome deerssert buck, silver bells a-jingling. The human family in the sleigh laughed joyously, enjoying the ride. Arbex shared their joy, for his work was his life. He lived to pull his precious sleigh and delight humans and animals alike. He loved his work almost as much as his family.
It was Christmastime, the time Arbex's business boomed. Occasionally his service so sought after, his brother Lysandre had to pull Arbex's reserve sleigh. Lysandre agreed, of course, only when the snow was fluffy, as Lysandre utterly hated slush, and the coin flowed plentily (brotherly love? Not really). Coin flowed like a river into Arbex's savings, but this year was different. For some reason, Arbex hadn't been receiving much business. The weather was the same as always... Perhaps people just weren't interested in sleigh rides anymore.
After a slow day of work, Arbex went home. He was greeted, strangely, not by his mate and two children, but only by his daughter. "Eira, where's Mom and Eph?" Arbex asked gently.
"Eph's sick, Daddy. Mom wanted you to come see him as soon as you got home." Eira said. "That's why I was waiting for you."

Unfortunately, I'm forced to drop out because I'm too busy to finish my form up, even with the extension. Finals week pretty much killed me, and I still have a lot of schoolwork to complete, so I won't be able to complete my form in time. </3
Good luck to everyone else!

Eeeee I adore reindeer <3 And peppermint. And such lovely tack :D

Deerssert Name:
Amalia

Gender:
Female.

Story:

(... well you never said what kind of Santa it had to be... /cough.)

The wind howled over the forest that night, whistling through the trees and making them creak and groan... and in one case, finally snapping and falling with an almighty crash. Amalia paused, one hoof still half off the ground, swiveling her ears some to ensure that it was indeed a good distance away and she wasn't under the sudden threat of being crushed. She was only met with the usual sounds though, so she paid it no mind and bowed her head, pushing against the raging gale. Hard pellets of snow stung at her face and eyes, but that was about the brunt of it, her thick fur helped protect the rest of her body. There would have been fat, too, but... well, it felt like winter had gone on forever, the driving snows had come over a month earlier than expected this year, and hadn't let up since.

[i']'Hard to believe it's only midwinter,'[/i] the doe thought, a low sigh misting in front of her. It was quite literally midwinter-- the sun had been up only a few hours before sinking back below the horizon, leaving the world dark and frozen. She knew humans often celebrated this time of year, or at least... she thought they did. Amalia did her best to keep away from human settlements, only passing by them when absolutely necessary.

To her disappointment... tonight constituted 'absolutely necessary'. There was a still place just on the other side of the mountain, where the wind and cold weren't as hard, where she knew she could find some food to build up her strength for the next trek. The course, avoiding humans, would take upwards of a week... whereas using their paths and the village cut it down to one night, two at the worst. If she could just push through, she'd be free and safe and full and warm. No more gnawing in her belly that made her want to crack her own antlers for just a morsel of food, no more being half blind and waking up with ice forming over her eyelids, no more--

But those thoughts were all driven from her mind, the only thing left being an absolute panic as Amalia's hooves met ice and flew out from under her, sending the deer crashing to the ground and tumbling down a steep hill... and that was the last thing she knew.

-------

Warm.

Amalia's head throbbed, her body sore and stiff, but she knew she was warm. Slowly, the doe opened her eyes, looking around aimlessly for several moments before her vision began to focus again. She was... not... outside? There was no wind, only a crackling fire in a stone pit against one wall, where... something seemed to be hanging over it. The rest of the... house? Was that it? The house seemed rather cramped for its size, the walls all covered with... well, she couldn't figure out what. Small... horses and deer and humans even, some looking made of wood and some looking soft; sweet-scented things all tied up in colorful bows, big... things covered in even more... colors; she couldn't make heads or tails of it now that her vision was swimming again. Amalia let out a low whuff of pain, closing her eyes and resting her head on the soft-covered floor, trying to ignore how everything throbbed and hurt.

"Ah... awake now, are you?"

Amalia opened one eye, noticing a figure that had escaped her first little look around the room. It was a human man-- older, by the looks of his gray-white hair and long beard; dressed all in red, a kindly smile on his face. He ambled over to the fire, carefully taking the kettle off and pouring it into a large bowl. Amalia's mouth watered at the scent, something... bitter, but almost spicy, all shadowed with sweet mint. The man stirred something white into it, then set the whole thing before her, as well as a small plate of... cookies? She recognized them from when she was a fawn and found where a human family had been traveling, they'd dropped some food. And they had been delicious, if memory served. Amalia sniffed at the steaming, deep brown contents of the bowl before dipping her tongue in... then quickly lapping down as much of the sweet, minty drink as she could, pausing only to crunch one of the cookies now and then. All the while, the man simply sat by her side, gently rubbing her back and flanks, using only the utmost care around the sore spots.

"You took quite a tumble out there," the man said once she had finished her meal, a soft chuckle in his voice. "Lucky you though, nothing's broken... well, a small chip off your antler here, but no harm done," he said, gently touching the shattered point of her lower left antler.

Amalia grunted in response, slowly getting to her hooves. Her legs trembled for a moment, but the food and warmth had given her strength, and she managed to stay standing.

"There you go!" the man chuckled, giving her a gentle pat on the shoulder. "Now, I'm real sorry to do this lass, but I'm not lettin' you out quite yet, y'need to rest up some. But I've got plenty'a room out in the stables with the other reindeer, come along! I'm sure you'll all get along... well, okay, Comet might be kinda difficult, but she's sweet enough," he murmured, carefully leading Amalia outside, towards a large, warm-looking stable. The deersert followed along-- perhaps not eagerly, but... she did trust this human. He seemed kind enough.

------------------------------------

He certainly was kind. Amalia spent two nights and three days in the stable recovering, enjoying the delicious cookies, cakes and tea the human kept bringing out for her-- three times a day, as well as a little pail of peppermints for her to snack on between big meals. The other deer seemed to accept her fine, though sadly, they couldn't really communicate much. But it was safe and warm and meant food, so Amalia couldn't bring herself to complain much.

It was the third night when it happened. A fierce storm had sprung up, and she'd seen the man wringing his hands and looking quite fretful every time he brought out the meals. The third time, she gave a questioning grunt, lightly nudging his shoulder with her nose.

"Hm?" he said, shaking his head. "Oh... nah, I'm sorry lass. Just..." he sighed, setting the pail of tea before Amalia and absentmindedly patting her head. "I've been makin' toys and treats for the kids out in town for a while now, do this every year. But the storm... and with Comet'n Dancer being laid up sick, I just don't know of we can make it..."

Amalia tilted her head to the side, letting out a small whuf and dipping her head to drink up the tea before it got too cold. Treats for the young ones? Well... that would be quite a pity if they had to miss out, wouldn't it? Especially when it was so very cold and bleak, and he'd been working so very hard...

'And I'm well enough now, aren't I?' she thought. Right. She lifted her head and stamped her hoof, looking at the man with bright eyes.

"Somethin' up?" he asked with a frown. Amalia simply let out a snort, pushing at the stable door until she was let out. She quickly trotted over to where the harnesses were hung up, nudging at them with her antlers. The man looked on, confused; but soon his expression changed and he broke out into a wide grin.

"You want to help out, that it?" he laughed. Amalia nodded, putting on her best smile in return and letting out a jubilant bellow.

"Well come on then, we've got no time to waste!" the man said, clapping his hands. The other reindeer looked up, startled by the sudden noise, but following placidly along as they were fitted with their tack and hitched up to the waiting sleigh outside. Amalia herself stood there at the front, proud and while she was going to have to get used to the odd weight... she loved the sharp, crisp jingling of the little bells that decorated her harness as they set off into the raging wind.

-----------

And after that? Well, everyone in town knows the rest of the story! The Grandfather-- the old man had given up his name long ago, he was simply everyone's Grandfather, no matter how old or young they might be-- rode into town in the middle of that blustery night, his sleigh led by the most magnificent little reindeer anyone had ever seen, with horns and hooves of peppermint and the funniest little tail, like one of the baker's sweets come to life!
And it's funny-- she was certainly a wild creature, she left as soon as the storms were gone and old Grandfather returned home... but every year since then, when the winter snows blow their worst, the sweet little deer comes back to bring a little joy into everyone's lives, during the darkest time of the year.

(... not my best story ever, but I just wanted to finish it >.<)
