Bartholomew, however
most call him Bart
or Tolly - Meaning
Gender
Male, though he isn't
classically manly, he's
not exactly feminine
either.
First of all I just want to say that
yes he is in fact named after a
LOTR/Hobbit character. I was
trying to come up with the
perfect name, and after a bit of
searching I decided on Thorin. To me
Thorin fits not only his design, but his
personality perfectly.
He isn't particularly manly in the traditional sense
of the word, he just doesn't feel the need to prove his masculinity.
The air was warm and damp, heavy with the scents of bats and mildew. It pressed against me as I slipped through the shadows on silent paws. I could feel them, thousands of eyes on my back, watching my every move until I reached my destination. There it was, the only light to be found in this world of dimness. A small stream of moonlight, dust swirling in a slow motion dance within it. As I stepped into the white light I felt some of the heaviness within me disappear, lifting away, and for just a moment I could feel it. I could feel what the creatures surrounding me felt with every beat of their leathery wings, I could feel freedom. "I am Thorin." I said to no one. "I have everything I could ever need, and yet I feel so incomplete." I could feel the creatures begin to stir. "What I yearn forever for they say I cannot have." My voice began to grow louder, reverberating across the small cavern. "None of them understand! None of them realize what is out there, what there is to be seen and to be done!" My words began to shake the walls around me as my anger and frustration grew. "I will find a way! A way to not only see what is beyond this cavern!" Voice dropping to hardly a whisper I spoke my pledge. "But to feel the air beneath me, to feel what it is like to truly be free."
As I stand on a small precipice leading towards the main cavern my gaze wanders. I see the stalagmites that stand in the corner bunched together like a group of chattering friends, the small pool of fresh water from a consistent drip, the wide expanse of bare cavern floor, and finally, my family. A smile began to creep its way across my face as I watched them together, sleeping, laughing, enjoying themselves, this is why have yet to leave, even though I would be fully capable on my own. I look at them and although I do not see the world as I someday wish to, I do see my world. This will always be my home, with the ones who mean the most to me. Shadows dance on the cavern floor as my siblings run towards me, calling for me to join in their mirth. Without another thought I run to meet them.
Night falls slowly here, the light gradually fading until it is darker then a starless night. Slowly we gather at the center of the cavern, one by one curling into each other. I feel warm breath on my shoulder and a small paw pressing against my ribs, but to me, there is no better place to be on a bitter night. Warmth surrounds us as we each begin to drift off to sleep. As I listen to the deep slow breaths of my loved ones, I know once again that, although I will see the world one day, this is where I am meant to be right now.
For this extra I made a set of chibi figurines out of polymer clay.
Better images
For my last extra I did a slightly abstract picture of Thorin when he's at his "moonlight pool"
