A horse and a man above, below;
One has a plan but two must go.
Mile after mile, above, beneath;
One has a smile one has teeth.
Though the man above might say “hello”,
Expect no love from the beast below.

“What if you were really old,
And really kind and alone,
Your whole race dead; no future.
What could you do then?
If you were that old, and that kind,
And the very last of your kind,
You couldn't just stand there and watch children
cry.”

about ↣ A little bit about this form.
You may be wondering why the main title of this form is "The Beast Below". Well, you're about to find out. I am basing this form, and this WtD's persona/story on two things. The first is the Doctor Who episode, "The Beast Below". To watch the episode, click here. If you read the article (there is a link above) you will understand some more about this. The second is a more normal thing that others tend to base their forms on; music. This WtD is based on the song Ho Hey - The Lumineers.
For now, just enjoy my form.
name ↣ Darwin
I believe that "Darwin" is the perfect name for this Whiptail Dragon. I chose the name "Darwin" because it matches both his personality and story so very well. The name "Darwin" means "old friend". You shall soon see why.
gender ↣ Male
Darwin is not a female name, surely. this WtD doesn't look like a girl to me anyway.
age ↣ 25 years old
So young, yet so old. He has had a long life in his short years. He has seen so much in this short life; many people in their entire lives have not seen what this young one has.
personality ↣
kind and compassionate Darwin is kind; so kind. He loves everything; from the the buff WtD next door that knocks over his flowers to the smallest lady beetle in his shrubs. Darwin never lets things pass by on their own. He loves to help, and will always go out of his way to help that ant make its way across the little river of water to its home. Darwin can't stand watching others get hurt, nor can he stand anything cruel. He can't stand by and watch anyone cry or fall. He will always be there for you, to pick you back up after you fall. Even if he doesn't know you; he has often been called a Guardian Angel. If Kindness is a virtue, then Darwin is a living entity of Kindness. He will never let you walk away with even the tiniest scratch. Darwin befriends those who no one loves, he is always found playing with those that no body else wants to be around. He's the missionary of the lost souls. Darwin seeks out those who are broken, who are lost, and befriends them. He will never turn away a lost soul. His kindness is a strange thing to many. He is constantly asked, "Why do you speak to them? Why do you talk to the weirdos?" His answer will always be, "Why not?" Darwin holds respect for every living thing, and does not want to see anyone left out or left behind. All he wants is for people to be kind to each other. Every living thing is precious to him.
If Darwin sees someone hurt, anxious or scared, he will come to the rescue. And he will not leave until he knowsthat they are okay. He refuses for anyone to fall short of love.
intuitive, wise For his young age, Darwin is very intuitive and wise. He can sense when others are not okay. He knows when others need to be cheered up, and he knows when they just need to feel loved. Hugs work for some, for others just a kind word will do. Sometimes it's sharing that piece of chocolate you have, or perhaps just listening. He knows how others work.
The cruelest beings out there know what hurts and how to inflict the most pain on others; emotionally or physically, maybe both. They use what people care about the most and they use it against them. Darwin knows what those weaknesses are, too. With what happened to him, he could have easily used those things against the world, too, and become powerful and cruel and feared. But he didn't. Most others who have met him barely remember his name. Darwin instead chose to use his knowledge for the good of others. He understands people; he can understand a lot of bad things that happen, and he can even relate to some. This makes him both very easy to trust and very hard to trust. Most others cannot understand that he is real; they cannot understand that some can be kind just for the sake of being kind and not for their own benefit.
selfless, lonely Darwin loves others. His whole life force is centered around others and their feelings. He never gives a thought about himself and is solely focused on making others happy. This does not mean he neglects himself, he washes and he combs his hair and if he's hurt he takes care of himself; but the others come first. All Darwin wants is to give and to make others happy. The reason for this is because he was hurt so many times that he wants no one else to feel his pain; all he wants is for everyone to experience the kindness that his world can offer.
However, Darwin is very lonely. He's the very last and he's so alone in this universe. Despite all the kind things he does, no one loves him. They cannot stand to go near him as he's "Weird" and he "is nice to other weirdos". When they say weird, they mean his markings. He is one of a kind, and is hated every day for it. Although he befriends the lowlifes, etc, they all eventually turn away from him and hurt him because he's different. This is also how he is so kind; what else has he to live for? Nothing.
story ↣ (Ho!) I've been trying to do it right
(Hey!) I've been living a lonely life
(Ho!) I've been sleeping here instead
(Hey!) I've been sleeping in my bed,
(Ho!) I've been sleeping in my bed
(Hey!)
Darwin was born to an enormous family. He was not born into Oracia, but on earth as he was descended from those who left Oracia for adventure. His particular family (or should I say 'clan') was centered in the jungles and the tropics. This probably explains Darwin's love for very strong, vibrant colours and his green thumb. These WtD's were very unusual, in two ways. First, they were totally nocturnal. In the day, to warm their reptile skins, they would sleep in the jungle canopies, close to the skies. Not to hot, not too cold. They would sleep here until the night, when they would go about the business of any other WtD, just under the moon's light and not the shine of the sun. They were able to do this because their scales retained their heat. This is also the reason the 'whites' of Darwin's eyes are black. They are built for the pale light of the night. There was a second reason that his family was highly unusual. They all looked virtually the same; dark greys and blacks with vibrant, glowing markings that throbbed gently in the moonlight. There were three main families in that clan, yellow marked, green marked and of course, blue marked. These were designed to light paths and dangers on dark nights and in thick foliage.
Darwin (as should be obvious) was born to the blue family. They were a huge clan. He had many brothers and sisters and he had wonderful parents, by the names of Sara and Adam. They loved him much and taught him well their ways. When he grew older, he was never at a loss for entertainment, because he had billions upon billions of cousins and brothers and aunts and uncles of all sorts to talk to and play with. The yellow and green marked clans were peaceful too, so he often made friends with those in the other clans. He was very comfortable with this arrangement and, although it got annoying when he slept beside a snorer, (it seemed all his uncles enjoyed snoring) or if he was smothered by his cousins, he loved every minute of his huge family. One day, as he slept, some hunters came through the bush. They were looking for leopards or perhaps monkeys to shoot and skin, for their cruel and wicked hobby. However, they found something else much greater. Whiptailed Dragons. They had not been heard of much in those parts, and were said to be very expensive creatures and the two vile humans had found the perfect prey. They left and returned the next day, prepared with an army of rich snobs with guns and their pockets stuffed with cash. The promise given to the rich was fulfilled. Loud rapports filled the air and down, down down went every single dragon in the canopy.
(Ho!) So show me family
(Hey!) All the blood that I will bleed
(Ho!) I don't know where I belong
(Hey!) I don't know where I went wrong
(Ho!) But I can write a song
(Hey!)
Darwin had awoken at the first few gunfires, as it was right near where he slept. He saw his mother and father shot that day. One of his aunts had rather quick reflexes and snatched up the small Darwin and a yellow marked baby and ran for it. She did not turn back until there was silence all around them, save for her footsteps and the alarmed calls of birds.
After several more hours of running than a WtD could possibly run, his aunty collapsed, breathing very rapidly. She spoke softly to Darwin and the yellow Whip tail dragon baby. "Keep running," she said. "Run until you reach the harbour. Get on the large boats and hide away until you reach the new land." (The dragons knew what harbours and boats were because older Whip tail dragons told them stories of people and their strange machines). Obeying his aunty, Darwin kissed her and ran with the yellow dragon neck and neck. He never saw his aunt again. They soon reached the harbour and boarded the first boat they saw. This is how their journey began.
I belong with you, you belong with me,
you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me,
you're my sweetheart!
Darwin and the yellow Whiptail soon began to get to know each other. Her name was Joy, named for her uplifting, gentle personality. Darwin explained that his name meant "Old Friend", as his parents believed him to have the personality of an old friend; always there behind the scenes, just to slink away quietly when his job was done; no praise or thanks, just a quiet goodbye. Joy and Darwin got along splendidly in their few months on the boat. They had no problems on the boat, as they both learned how to sneak fruits from the kitchens and how to dodge cabin boys cleaning. At last, when they landed, they were both older, sneakier, wiser and more sea-worthy than land-worthy. Their markings had become more like that of an adults; Darwin's a rich cyan and Joy's a brilliant shade of molten gold. They landed in a nice, plains area with a few large oak trees and settled there. They spent a few, peaceful years there, and their closeness grew. Joy meant more to Darwin than anything else in the world; and his love for her was reflected right back in her golden eyes. They were perfect for each other, and I cannot describe with words the amount of love that they shared. I would also have liked to say they lived happily ever after, but this was not so.
One night, as the two dragons went hunting for fruits under the stars, Darwin's life was changed forever; and Joy's was taken from her. They came across a pack of ferocious wolves, looking to take the territory for themselves. Two Whiptail dragons might take down one or two wolves, but a whole pack of wolves could not be beaten. Joy and Darwin fought side by side, tails lashing and markings throbbing brightly. They were clearly no match and fell within the hour. Joy was pressed against a tree, slashing furiously at the alpha and his crew. Darwin was held back by a few warriors; he whipped his tail powerfully against two, yet more still came one, fur and fangs flying. He knew Joy would be killed if he couldn't get there fast enough. His heart pounded violently against his chest as he saw less and less of Joy and more of the wolves. In a flying leap, he tore out of the circle of attackers and towards Joy. Pure rage and love poured out of him as he attacked these wolves. Back, back they went, although many teeth found his scales and tail. At last, he reached Joy, hauled her out of the mess and ran, the victory howls of the wolves following them through the night. He ran and ran until he felt the sun on his back. Overwhelmed by exhaustion, he climbed a nearby tree, Joy in his jaws (for she was a petite dragon) and promptly fell asleep.
When he awoke at dusk, he noticed that Joy had not moved an inch. Terror raked through him like claws of ice. He gently nosed her. Despite the fact that her position meant she was in the sun all the day they slept, her body was freezing cold.
Darwin did not eat, drink, or even move that night. He sat watch over her body, tears pouring from his eyes.
(Ho!) I don't think you're right for him
(Hey!) Think of what it might have been if you
(Ho!) Took a bus to China Town
(Hey!) I'd be standing on Canal
(Ho!) And Bowery
(Hey!)
(Ho!) And she'd be standing next to me
(Hey!)
Day passed, night fell. Darwin buried Joy beneath a peach tree, her favourite fruit, and left. He walked. No plan in mind, no hope for the future. He survived, but he did not live. He simply walked. Darwin traveled over at least a half of the place he landed in, a small area on the coast of little New Zealand. So far from home. Darwin had no love, no family, no one, nothing. This is what brought out the deep kindness in him. Because he was so kind and so alone, he set off. He decided that no one should have any of this happen to them; loss of family, loss of love, loss of companionship; loss of hope. So he decided that he would find more dragons like himself. And he would help them. Darwin could easily have turned violent, vicious and cruel, never accepting anymore friendship or help and hiding away his heart from pain. But he didn't. He opened his heart to the world and his journey began.
He wandered through New Zealand first, starting slowly. His first encounter was with a small, black and white Whiptail and his three fluffies. One was ill, and because of his green thumb and plant knowledge, Darwin was able to cure her. Yet the father sneered at Darwin, calling him a horrid beast, something of legends, not a true whiptail. Darwin forced away tears and ran. It continued like this, Darwin traveling, helping or being rejected. Everywhere, because of his markings, he was frowned up on and called a hated beast, a terrible burden to the dragon race. Little did they know of Darwin's family.
Love, we need it now
Let's hope, hope for some
Cause oh, we're bleeding out
I belong with you, you belong with me,
you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me,
you're my sweetheart
Darwin went everywhere. He walked and walked. One day, he found a harbour on the other side of New Zealand. He took a boat from there. He landed in Australia. All around he went; Queensland, the NT, Western Australia. He caught a boat from there to the islands like the Philippines and Singapore. Then it was Sri Lanka, India. All over, he found more and more Whiptail dragons. He never knew so many Whiptails were out there! He met them all over the place, and helped them. A burning forest in Sri Lanka, an injured fluffy in the Philippines. And he didn't stop. All over he went. He went to Africa; Landing in Somalia, then Egypt, then Libya. Sudan, Chad, Niger, Morocco. Then he hit South America after a long boat trip. Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia. A widowed dragon in distress, a homeless teenaged Whiptail needing a place to stay.Throughout his journey, Darwin did not always find welcoming paws. He often encountered bitter rejection. Strange one, weird one, hideous loner. His markings were mocked all over Africa and South America, although everywhere he went he encountered at least one bitter, scared Whiptail. His markings became a huge burden to him, and he was kicked out many times from villages in need yet refusing his help. And Darwin suffered, he was so lonely and broken. He was a horrible Beast, the Beast that lurks below. (For remember, Darwin was nocturnal. While all the other whiptails were in trees and dens, he was below them, walking the earth). The last of his kind, mocked, spat upon, frowned at and so alone. He was no stranger to an empty heart or a tear smudged face. And yet still, he helped and helped and helped. He traveled to North America, Alaska, Canada. He doubled back to Europe. Italy, France, Germany. He helped a large group of Mountain Whiptail Dragons from a landslide, warned plains dwellers of oncoming floods. Helped a young family rebuild their lives. Despite all the loneliness, the pain, the inevitable rejection, so many other loved him. Darwin even gained a few names for himself.

There was one thing, though, that all these people, places, and names had in common. If anyone asked of this Saint, this Gentle One, this Golden Heart, there was always one reply.
He was like an old friend in my time of need.
He was there when I needed him most, and old friend, perhaps of another life.
When I needed him he came, like an old friend, an old bond.
Darwin, my old friend. everywhere he went, so many people loved him and hated him and longed for his company or screamed revenge. This strange, weird glowy whiptail dragon. He was so kind that some people loved him to bits, irrespective of his strange markings. Some hated the sight of him and his strange markings, strange eyes and generosity and fled from him. But everywhere he went, rejected or accepted, he helped. And he cared and he loved. All the pain, all the suffering. The calling of names and mockery of his once great family and their markings. And not once did he complain. Darwin the Gentle One, the Golden Heart, The Wonderful. An old friend; always there behind the scenes, just to slink away quietly when his job was done; no praise or thanks, just a quiet goodbye. He opened his heart for all the world to know love and kindness and gentleness. Because he was so hurt and tortured inside, he could not bear to see the same happen to others. And so he became what he is now. A lonely wanderer. An empty heart. The Kindness of a divine. An old friend. The Beast Below.__________________________________
