I'm sorry- I know only 2 or 3 sentences in the final paragraph express that the human does not have the money to keep him around. I may or may not alter it slightly- I was just so focused on the story itself, and of course there was the paragraph limit {which I totally understand}, so I basically just focused on the story and the actual adventure. I also tried to stick to being really descriptive. So...that's it. x3
Adabaki stalked silently through the eerie, shadowed forest, a few shafts of moonlight picking their way through the leafless branches to rest their cold fingers on his coat and illuminate his white patches. Long ears, carefully set on top of his head for maximum hearing ability, swiveled around to catch any stray sound he could possibly be making. Walking straight through a human-owned forest in the middle of the night was not exactly his most safe or well thought out plan ever, but he was determined to carry through with it. A barely three-year-old colt, firm-set in his desire to prove himself to his herd. Perhaps, one day, he would charge ahead, leading his herd valiantly and protecting them always. Yes, someday, he would be the head of the bunch, the lead stallion.
A noise alerted Adabaki to another presence. He froze, limbs locking into place, feathery tail drooping to the decaying leaf floor. The dusting wisps caught one another, and soon entangled each other with a sound like a fluttering whisper of a breeze. This was no mere squirrel, and it certainly had not been him. Hardly daring to breathe, Adabaki stood noble in the moonlight, outline paled by the light of the full moon. He awaited his capture and his punishment, and knew he should never have taken thus risk. But alas, it was too late for the bombard of "what if's", as the young stallion saw the little human, who was immediately swallowed up into the glare of the moon when it took a few steps into the clearing.
Cautiously, she approached him, her light brown hair held back in a very loose ponytail. Her green eyes shone, reminding Adabaki of his own mother's emerald gaze. He held back obstinately, refusing to let the young child get anywhere near him. His nostrils flared; the whites of his eyes flashed; and he felt the sensation to rear up and flee as she pressed him back against a massive redwood tree. Frightened, he let out a fierce bray, which terrified the girl almost to the point of tears, but she held firm, walking towards him now with a lowered stare and an outstretched hand. Slowly, Adabaki realized that the little human meant him no harm- she only wanted to touch his silky white coat, with the same burning curiosity as he had once had to harness. He looked again at the human, and saw parts of himself reflected in her. So he relaxed, alert but calmer, and let her tiny palm land gently on his shoulder.
He disliked the touch, but the faint gasp of awe from the girl made it bearable. The clouds floated away, lifting away into skies unknown to reveal the bright, shining moon again. And another ghostly touch lightly fingered Adabaki's coat, the moonlight touched by a chilled wind- and again he looked like no more than a patchy, faded phantom. This time, while the young child was still frightened, she was also too fascinated to have any sort of reaction whatsoever. After a long moment of an almost haunted silence, the human reached for him again, but this time did not only stroke him but hugged him, chest to chest ,with her arms wrapped around his neck and shoulders. He snorted, causing her to jump, but then the discomfort faded away and he found himself actually quite enjoying the sensation of warmth on his broad and sturdy body. Nudging her away, he trotted over to the nearest tree stump and whinnied excitedly, wondering if the little human was smart enough to catch on. If she was, she would truly be deserving of riding him, as he so intended for her to do.
She noticed almost immediately, and with a high-pitched squeal that made Adabaki pin his ears back she sprinted ovef and leapt onto him ,throwing caution to the wind in her eagerness. Flinging himself into action, Adabaki made a huge show of walking with an exaggerated stride before trotting off back the way he had come. But the little girl was starting to get frightened. All alone out in the wilderness, with only a strange equid to keep her company, and indeed to rely on for her life, it was becoming a bit too much for such a young creature. After appproximately half an hour of travel, she began to cry, and then Adabaki could do nothing but stand and try to figure out what to do. It was several minutes more until he decided to attempt to let the human tell him where to go. He pricked hiscears high, and turn one direction, the one with trees growing thicker and thicker, and let out a questioning nicker. Evidently, by the tight clutching pull induced on his withers, that was not the way to go, but by process of trial and error, they managed to find the path that would hopefully lead back to the young child's home.
Hours later, picking path after path, selecting the safest paths to take, and trying to ultimately protect the tiny girl at all costs, he found himself stumbling onto a well-worn clay path. Adabaki realized that the girl had dozed off, so he stomped his hind foot, jolting her into awakeness. Upon opening her eyes, the girl took a large breath and whispered to him, "Yes this is it! Thank you." It was clear that she expected him to leave now, and for a moment he found himself wanting to, but now Adabaki discovered with a fair amount of astonishment that he actually wanted to stay with the little girl. When he tried to express to ger, he carefully delivered her to the ground and took a few hopeful steps towards an old-looking barn, but she shook her head and began crying again. He understood at once that she couldn't keep him, but he was determined to stick around still. How fervently he wished that he could speak to her! Then he could say he didn't require anything but space to roam. Fortunately, the next morning her parents found her in bed, but how shocked they were to find the equid in her bedroom! They nade arrangements with their neighbors to take care of Adabaki in return for giving him an acre of pasture, and so while Adabaki now leads a reclusive life, it is certainly not a lonely one.
