History And Life
I was born in the middle of the day in the middle of my herd, which was quite weird on my part, I was up and standing in the first 30minutes of my like which I sometimes regret because that was all my mother would talk about for the next few weeks. It seemed that I was the youngest in the herd but once I grew a little I was certainly not the smallest. I had little interest in girls like most of my other colt friends, and even if I was younger than them they treated my equally as good. I did not stay with my mom half as long as most of the other shy fillies in my herd, who seemed to get scared of a leaf falling form a tree, but I did hang around and listen to their conversations, which some where quite interesting. I listened and learned about us creatures, who where out of many in this jungle, but I also heard about a stallion swallowed up by a moon phantom, which I was immediately interested in because I loved scary stories. I asked about it and my mother went on a few hours about him and how he got in a fight with a large stallion glowing like the moon, with a mane that swept to his ankles, and about how a young mare in the group had run away with him, and of course, how he had killed my father.
With me around, by the end of the day the all of the foals where talking about it. It seemed that it never came out the same time, and by the next morning their where seven different versions. I finally called them all over and straightened it out by trying to tell the exact story my mom told me, which believe me is HARD after all of the other versions.
I will tell you it was almost a coincidence when the next day that mare came trotting up. We all ran to our mothers when a foal came trotting up behind her. An immediate anger swelled up in me, and I wanted to go and get that mare and her foal and make them hurt the way my father did, it was obvious the foal was the daughter of the moon phantom. When the mother saw that we where not welcoming she turned around and trotted away. We could see thru all of the trees she had stopped a distance from us and was now making a place fore her and her foal to sleep.
We only saw them a few times those next few weeks, and maybe a glance of them where they where staying. Our mothers said for us to keep our distend and play in the opposite direction that they where. We did, but we where always tempted to go and spy on them.
One day I decided to go and chase dragon flies with my buddy, Hatchek. Their was on really slow one that we could keep track of, but we where so into following him that we did not keep track of where we were! It was terrible when we lost sight of him and came back to reality realizing that we did not know where we were! We tried to re-track our steps but we only got even more lost. By the time the sun started dropping we got really scared and started think of that night phantom. We did not sleep that night, we wandered, and by the morning it seemed that we would hit the ends of the earth. We got to the edge of the jungle, which WAS the ends of the earth to us. We made imprints on the hot sand with our hooves which where eventually washed away by the tide. We stared at the moving waters, and it eventually came to us that we might just get swept away, disappear forever to our families, just likes our hoofprints....
"What are we to Codemion?" asked Hatchek. "I really don't know, I was about to ask you the same thing." I replied.
"What if we never see them again?" He asked me again. "I have been thinking the same thing all day too." I admitted.
It was the afternoon when we decided to go back into the jungle. We walked for another six hours of weird noises and smells.
Suddenly we looked at each other. Hatchek had heard it too. A twig breaking. then two. Something was walking, bigger than a lizard, snake, or jungle mouse ; and it was close....
"What is it is another one of our kind, we could take the risk, or if it eats us I guess I would rather die than be alone out here for the rest of my days." Hatchek whispered to me. I nodded and answered, " I agree..." , so we took off following the sound. We heard a sigh, just behind the branches and rock, which is where we took our place so we could spy. We both took a beep breath and held our stomachs in....
We gasped quietly with amazement when we saw the most beautiful young filly on the other side. Her hair was long and glowing and her coat dappled like the moon. It was indeed the filly that we hated so much but she was not little and scrawny any more. She was the most beautiful of our kind that I had ever seen. All of the hatred in me dissolved into dust and I decided I wanted to watch her all day. After nibbling on a few blades of grass she must have felt us watching her because she put her head up and looked alert. She shivered though it was not cold and trotted off.
We followed her and when they lead us back to the herd everyone was so relieved. We told our long stories on how we had used our sense of direction and found our way back because we did not want to admit that the young filly had saved our lives. After that day we seemed to notice her more and more. We realized that every morning, when we where waking she was watching us form behind a few big trees, and watching us intensely while we played. And to tell you the truth, we spied on her.
After a few weeks of spying, we had decided that she was a mute. For we had learned that her father never gave the slightest of a grunt when our mothers saw him, and this filly didn't either. Even her mom hardly talked to her, just gave motions, or like if she already new what she was asking by looking into her eyes....
That day came when we where playing. King and queen actually, and a foal named Tasker was king, and a filly named Grantcia was queen. I was a servant and I fanned them with a branch.... well, to get back to the story....
All of the sudden the really pretty filly cantered out from behind a bush. We where all startled and scared she was going to come and make us into moon rocks because of her sudden appearance, and so we stared to run away to our mothers.
"WAIT!" she loudly cooned. Her voice was smooth and not to deep, and you just felt like you where dust being sucked into it. We all stopped and froze. "Don't go away! I don't want to be alone any more!" she continued. It was most interesting hearing her voice and I kind of mumbled to myself while looking at her, "So you can talk, we thought you where cursed with silence..." I drifted off. She herd me, "Why did you think that? Where would I get a curse?" she asked. I took a step forward, "By your father of course!". She looked surprised and interested, "My father? Can you tell me about my father. My mother told me that he is not here but what does he look like? Tell me everything you know!". I relaxed. She was just an ordinary foal like us. I was fascinated that she did not even know her father, but it did make us all more comfortable.
By the time I had told her the whole story all of the foals had come quite close her and where al examining her face. A thought ran thru my head that she was the daughter of a stallion that killed our father, but she was so innocent and delicate that I whipped the thought away. She asked several more questions and interduced herself as Melody before she asked, "Thank you, but may I ask you one more question. Where can you find the moon. I have only seen it fully once, and maybe a couple more times just seeing the corner or the shine of it. Do you know where I can find it?". It was weird because for all we knew the moon was her father itself. " I have never seen the moon. So I am afraid I can not help you on that one, but I wish you luck on finding your moon Melody!" I answered as my mother called me as did the other mothers, the sun was getting low and the sky was losing light. I looked back to see her nuzzle her mother. I smiled.
Months passed and I got closer and closer to Melody, but as did the other colts. She did not seem to notice that we where all crazy about her.
It was nearing her first birthday when we all stared thinking of going off as bachelor stallions, which we would all have to do in about a half a year. The second someone said something about taking Melody, a huge argument would arise. After about three big arguments us boys started fighting.
Friends no more as we walked back to our mothers to say goodnight before we went to our own places now. We glared grimly at eachother as we watched the herd that night... we where all getting practice.
The next morning all of the colts got together to figure out how to solve the problem. We all made an agreement that the night of Melody's birth we would gather together near a pond a mile away and fight for her. We worried no more about who would get hurt and who would not.... we where all set on winning.
That night Hatchek came around. I glared at him as he walked up but all he could say was, "Good Luck." and give a pip of a smile. I knew that it also meant "goodbye" to our friendship. I nodded in return. Never would we wander on adventures again. I would never pick arguments about stupid things, and he would never tickle me on my withers as he always did. Those day where we would stay up till the morning came and then sleep all day was just history. For a few moments I wished that I would never have to grow up....
The weeks where creeping by and her birth date was coming in a total of three days. Every day, alone, I practiced and trained. Every day I ran four miles, 45minuts of swimming, and the rest of the day practicing my horns on branches and trees. And if I was not doing those I was going out into the forest to find healthy plants to eat. I would also sharpen my horn a lot on rocks and such.
I saw other colts doing this, and all I could do was hope that I was just a little better.
Finally it came. We gathered around the pond, our muscles rippling and our coats shining. All of the sudden a beam of light cut through the trees, we all gasped. The moon was shining brighter than ever and seemed to watch us stand their. A bird of some sort broke the silence and immediately we started.
Two at a time.
Fighting till one fell or gave up.
Hatchek was winning so far. He had brought down three and it was my time to go up. I looked him straight into the eyes an lowered my head, getting ready to slash my horns into his flesh.
Time flashed before me.... my past... the present... and the future.
I felt his horns touch mine......
I cry of pain came from Hatchek as I got him in the neck. He did not give up. We had been up here longer than any of the other horses and where still fighting. Our breathing was hard, "Give up Hatchek!" I said as we held our horns as each other. "Not just yet my friend." He mumbled back. We slashed ourselves again and he got me hard in the chest. A burst of anger came apon me. I charged at his face, my head down, and with al my strength, tore him down.
After Hatchek their was few other colts, or should I say stallions. We where not playing anymore. This was a test for all of us, for our strength, and our soul. No more stallions as friends. No more.
I breathed hard as I the last stallion shied away out of the ring. I had won. My breathing was fierce and heavy. I was bleeding intensely and bruises covered my body from the kicks I had received. we all took a bath in the pond silently and headed home. The moon had left and the sky was regaining its lite. Hatchek was injured the most out of all of the others. He had to lean on another stallion as he limped home.
After a few attempts to wake her I yelled, "Rise and Shine Melody! It is your birthday!" in her ear. She opened her eyes a little and grunted. "Aren't birthday girls allowed to sleep in?" she protested. "Not today Melody!" I replied, and being so close to her face i had the urge to nuzzle her. But I kept it back. "Ok Codemion, but I am not staying here!" she got up quickly and cantered away. I let her go as she went to say good morning to her mother. I was about to go get her again when the annoying little mare named Grantcia dragged her off somewhere.
It was a few minutes later when she walked out of a bush, the same one she did when we first talked to her.
I looked around to see that all of the other colts/stallions where looking at her too. She did look extra beautiful this morning with her coat shining like the summer sky. I looked over and glared at them, "Dream On~" is what my expression looked like and they glared at me back. This must have bothered her because when she saw it she trotted away towards the watering hole. At first I did not know whether to follow her or wait here. I decided that I should follow her. "Melody?" I asked. She had her head up when i came into view and seemed relieved to see that it was just me. Had I scared her? I stood their for a second, hoping she would not turn me down. She seemed to examine me and a fear came to my stomach. How was I going to say this? When she did not answer i decided to go on. "Melody." I repeated, "I need to ask you something.". "What?" she asked, she turned to me timidly. I continued, "Well, I don't quite know how to say this but, well....." I stopped. What was i to say? I love you and I want to have you forever as my own, that is could you, or would you be my lead mare? No. I stiffened up and held my head high as I continued, "It is your birthday, and my mother sais that the moon will be full tonight. As I was wondering one day I saw a place where no trees covered the sky. Could I take you their tonight?" All at once, I had no idea why I had said that. She thought for quite along time. I just stared at her. Finally she replied, "Yes Codemion, I would be pleased to go with you tonight.". A large smile spread onto my face. I probably looked like an idiot when I trotted away but I really was so happy that she had said yes.
Just at sundown i went and picked her up. My memory burned as I tried to remember how to get to the open field that Hatchek and me had found once, and played in it. After wandering a little I exclaimed, "Here it is!". She looked at it and burst into tears. I looked at her in the eyes. "Are you ok melody? Do you not like it?". " I love it~" she replied, "You see Codemion. This is where I was born." I did not know what to think because I was confused about her feelings, But she made it clear that she was happy by smiling the biggest smile I had seen on her face yet.
She said yes to being my lead mare. And I will protect her and love her with all my heart and soul until the day I pass.
I guess you can say that we lived Happily ever after~
