----->I gazed into the sun and I walked towards it, towards the voices calling me home. As my eyes adjusted to the light, I made out two figures. My mother and father were standing there gesturing into a brightly lit house. *Home,* I muttered to myself. *Home!* I yelled and awoke myself from my dream. There I was lying on my hard, uncomfortable bed, in our trailer, with the scent of bacon and eggs filling my room! I, unwillingly, fell out of bed and walked into the kitchen to find my dad cooking up a storm. Ever since my mother died he had been trying to be both my mother and father. It was sometimes hard for me to take in. He always tried to cheer me up with funny jokes and little trinkets, since it didn’t always make me overjoyed to be on the road all the time!
Daddy danced around the table before placing a small wrapped box onto the table before me. I put on a smile for him, when he gave me a little gift. I opened it and there before me was a small green bead with the name Oklahoma carved carefully into it. Another bead meant another move. I quickly took it out and put it onto my bracelet. I already had 13 different beads with 13 different places carved into them. New York, Mexico City, Shanghai, Singapore, Delhi, Cairo, Johannesburg, Lagos, Moscow, London, Berlin, Munich, Paris and finally Oklahoma City. Each bead represents the places we have lived.
I don’t have many friends, having friend’s means developing a relationship. I don’t want to get attached to anyone! It’s hard on me having to home every few months. My father’s job requires us to move. He’s an engineer and rarely home. When he is it means we are moving!
“Moving again? Where are we going this time?” I questioned in a monotone voice so he couldn’t hear my sorrow. “We are off to Rome!” He smiled excitedly, “There are many new houses being built there and they need me on site!” I nodded with a mouthful of eggs stuffed into my mouth and looked back down at my beads. Each one holds memories of my life, way back to the day my mother died. I had a sudden flashback.
“Mommy! Mommy! What’s wrong?” My big worried eyes glanced at her as held her gut! “Daddy!” I screamed. I was so little and so scared that I would lose the thing most precious to me! My father came rushing in, it all happened so fast! The ambulance came and took her away and all of a sudden it was over. Time stopped. I had lost my best friend, my mother, the closest thing I had to heaven was now in heaven! I still remember her weak smile as she went into emergency “Everything is going to be ok Azuri, don’t worry, don’t cry, I will be there for you always” A single tear dropped from my little face.
Right away we moved to New York City, Dad was trying to run away from the past and forget about everything. I couldn’t say a single word about mother or even ask him anything or he would go into a mental breakdown and not say a word for at least a day. I kept my mouth shut.
I made many friends in New York. Of course I never thought we would be moving again so soon! One day, I woke up and my father stood in the door way. He softly called my name before handing me a small package. It was a bracelet with a single bead on it, carved in was the name New York. After that we were off. I left all my friends behind and began a new life in Mexico City! Again our time was short and just as before I received a small package with a small bead in it with the name of our city carved neatly into it. My life was a broken record and kept repeating itself over and over again each year we moved!
I never really had a place to call home! I was always lonely! Suddenly the flash back left me and I was again sitting at the table with bacon and eggs in front of me. As I went to sleep that night the dream came back to me again. My mother and father came to me, welcoming home. I entered the house to find a small package on the ground. I opened it to find a tiny message carved into it. “Home is where the heart is.” I then realized that I have a home and I always have had one, my father and me. Together we would always be home!
