Leonard is very spiritual. Instead of taking medicine, he will use herbal remedies. He loves myths, legends, and folklore more than the television, and he is constantly trying to find signs in nature. He also adores camping, and his favorite pastime is telling one of his many stories around a fire. Leo finds solace in watching the water in a nearby creek or river, taking a long walk through the forest, and picking berries to add to his spiral (he finds new specimens and tapes them in according to color.) Despite all of this though, he is not religious because he only believes what he sees. Superstitious by nature, if he finds a heads-up penny on the ground you better believe that he'll pick it up. He actually has a jar full of "lucky coins" that he keeps in his sleeping quarters. Leonardo does not value riches or beauty, but kindness and sincerity. In a mate, he looks for someone who won't call him a hippie, and a funny girl who has a lot of room for love.

Leo was never like the other baby Shao. He never liked to dawdle around his mother, but rather go outside and get dirty. The others used to mildly tease him, but he quickly generated a tough skin and just smiled through it all. In his teen years, Leo was also different. While others complained about the hot sun, he embraced it, and lay outside for hours. "It helps me feel closer to nature," he would say before exiting his den. They all watched him cautiously. Some that he was weird, others flat out crazy. But this didn't bother him- as long as he was dong what he loved, he was content.

I always knew I was different. I mean, I was the first to explore, and the first to love the grass and the rocks and the trees. Nature has always fascinated me, and while others think that I'm insane, I find solace in the breeze. It wasn't until one day, though, that I realized just how interesting and special I was. It was a Monday and the days had grown both hotter and longer. Which for me, was a sign to go camping. And that's exactly what I did. I went out into the shallow mouth of the forest and lay back, watching the stars. I finally fell asleep, and when I did, a strange dream came over me. I was there, of course, and also other Shao. Ones that I had never seen. "Leo, you are not like the others, and neither were we," they began, "we were picked on, teased, harassed... But I promise you that as long as you stay true to yourself nothing bad will happen." I then woke up, and I haven't gotten their words out of my head since, and I don't believe that I ever will.
