I looked at the clouds above me. Just another boring day in the forest. I sighed, sprawled out in the tree where I sought refuge. Maybe, if I was lucky, there would be a storm. I smelled the air, but couldn't find any traces of the sweet smell of a summer rain. the clouds looked like popcorn, scattered in the sky here and there without pattern. It was beautiful, though. I tried counting them. One, two, three... crunch!
What was that?
crunch!
Was someone there?
crunch! I shifted my weight on the branch, peering toward where the noise was coming from, my tail flickering to and fro.
crunch! I could see it. It looked like... Like another lion dragon? How could this be? I thought that I was the only one for miles... I had only just chosen this forest but three days ago, when I was allowed to move from the den.
crunch! I guess I had neighbors.
crunch! he was... A dark greenish color. Earthy. It looked like he had some odd, darker greenish markings, and... A tree on his shoulder? His feet looked like they had walked through an ocean, and accepted its color as their own. His mane and tail were tinged with firey orange.
crunch! I had to admit, he was pretty cute, to be the first lion dragon I had seen for a few days. I was wary, though. He was passing through my territory. Mine. What was on the other side of these woods?
crunch! I hadn't been that far yet. All I knew was my forest and lake.
crunch! I watched him move quickly, he had already passed my tree, not even sniffing around to know if he was being watched. his paws parted the overgrown grass as he made no attempt to hide himself in it.
crunch! he moved with a purpose. This would be fun.
crunch! my paws hit the ground as I gave a roar that seemed to startle him, and he turned around to face me. He couldn't have been.any more than a week or two older than me, but his size showed it. My head was at his shoulder, and his head was almost twice the size of mine. I could see his eyes, they shined a hazey grayish-green, and he stared at me like I was a friend. My fur bristled and I growled "who are you and where are you going?"
"My name is Reed, and I'm going where I belong. Home."
He turned around and kept walking. I stood up from my defensive crouch and cocked my head slightly, questioning.
"where is "home" ?" I asked him, suddenly excited, and rerouted up to him, walking at his side. He looked at me and chuckled. "home for me, is a swamp. Nowhere you should be, you'll get that... Beautiful white fur... You'll get it caked in mud before you even get to see what I see."
"i will not! Are there trees?" She asked defensively, for that was where she felt she belonged.
He chuckled again "yes, there are trees, from what I remember. They aren't like your trees. Your birch trees keep you hidden easily, but these, you'll look like a croc trying to hide in a shallow puddle"
I laughed at his comparison. I was really beginning to become interested in this... Swamp. "can I come with you?" I asked him. "how far away is it?"
"only about... Three days' journey from here, if I remember correctly. Allowing time for resting and hunting, of course. You are free to come if you want."
So I followed him. Reed. My first friend. That first day, we talked as we wandered through the forest. He told me of his past. How he had been to the swamp before, but his parents wouldn't let him go there because they said it was too dirty. How he fell in love with the fish, the water, the trees, and even the mud. Now, after three weeks of traveling, he only had a couple days to get back there. Where he belonged. That night, after fearing on a couple turkey, we fell asleep under the stars. "by the way, I never learned your name." He mumbled, curled into a ball under the tree branch I used as a perch.
"Magistique." I replied, "call me Maggie"
I think I was starting to like him. He was really handsome, and sweet, too. I wondered if he felt the same.
"Magistique" he tried, "very pretty name. Ill call you Magpie, though."
"thank you." I whispered, as if not to wake him.
He reached a paw up, and traced a claw down my eye mark. "This saddens me."
"what?"
"It looks like you are always crying, little Magpie. I don't like the thought of you crying."
After a few minutes, he was snoring away, sound asleep. I looked up at the moon, shining bright in the beautiful night sky, like a large pool of silver amongst the deep blue sea.
The next day, I woke up to the smell if freshly killed deer. "oh, you went without me?"
"you were sleeping, I didn't want to wake you, and I feared my growling stomach would do just that. Dig in" I pondered his vocabulary. He seemed much older than he was, by the way he talked. So... regally. It really didn't match his muddy coat at all.
I ate my fill, and we were off again.
The trees turned from white to brown, smooth to rough, and clean to moss-touched.
"we might get there by tonight, if we move fast." Reed explaimed. He was much bigger now than he was the last time he was at the swamp, and his legs took him a greater distance with less effort.
"yipee!" I exclaimed. From all he told me, I was overjoyed to hear I would get to see the wonders of this place for my own eyes.
We arrived just as the sun was setting.
It was gone.
Where his beautiful swamp once stood, now was a human town.
My heart broke.
"no."
"oh no, Reed, im so sorry!"
"no. No, this isn't happening... Its a trick. I got it wrong, its the other way. No no no no no no."
"Reed, calm down" I comforted, and he sat down, crying to the ground. I pushed my head under his in a hug, the contact causing shivers of happiness, despite the coincidences. "its okay. I'm sure there are other swamps. We just have to find them."
"no. No, I have been to other swamps, and they are nothing compared to... Mine. Oh..." He sobbed again, "i have nowhere to live, now. I... Ive failed."
This very second, I found out something. I felt a starburst of electricity send tendrils of cool tingling from my heart. "you can come live with me." I offered.
I had feelings for him? How? I had only known him for two days. I...
the only love worth finding comes quick, in the blink of an eye. I remembered my mothers words to me as I left my den.
"really? Are you... Are you sure you won't mind?" I licked his cheek.
"not one bit. Theres even a lake filled with life that I think you might like." Knowing his infatuation with water, I pointed this out to him.
"really? Maybe you'll have to show me, then, Magpie." His tears stopped falling, and I licked the remaining salt from his fur.
"Maybe I will." I smiled.
And we began our journey toward home. Our home.
