I never knew my mother well. Father always told me that she was as gorgeous as the ocean itself. Her fur never looked like mine though, so if you looked at the back of my head, you would believe me to be lying about the whole thing. I never lie though, especially not about her. Father said he met her when they were just beans. Their colors weren't as bright and their markings hadn't shown all the way. They had no horns either. Straight away, they shared a bond. My father said her name was Marina, and she was the most lovely thing he had ever lay his eyes on. Her soul was white and pure, like the pearl of an oyster. He had been the leader of his Jam, and they called him by a name that struck the seas like a wave. Atlantis. He had the choice of picking many girls to be his partner, but he wanted my mother over them all. They stuck together through hard times and always relied on one another. It was no surprise when they became mates, and it was such a blessing when my mother got pregnant.
I never knew my mother though. She passed away when she had my egg, which drowned my father's heart in a tsunami of sacredness. Her dying words were to take care of me always, and my father planned on keeping that promise. Letting her wilted body sink to the depths of the ocean where she'd feel most peaceful, he scooped up my egg and watched over it constantly. He liked to set it in the sand so I could listen to the waves, and you may not believe me, but I remember hearing them like a lullaby.
When I hatched, my father said I "skipped around like a baby seagull". Thus my name had also hatched upon everyone: Skipper. I lived up to my name, being an energetic soul constantly. I was often curious, and once when I was going through father's stuff, I came across a plush squid. Apparently my father had given it to my mother, and they had shared it on the many adventures they went on. It was named Pip, and I begged him to let me call it my own. After a moment's hesitation, he accepted, and my friendship with the squid bloomed.
It didn't take long for "Skip and Pip's Adventures" to go into full action. Me and him were constantly doing things, able to communicate in our own special language. Our first adventure was the "Great Clam Escape". We wanted to catch a nice pearl to bring back to father, and the ocean life was splendid as we dived down to find the biggest clam. Pip pointed out our target, a giant dark clam that seemed to be resting. In swift motions I dived towards it and tried to pry open it's mouth, Pip on my shoulders as he waited to grab the pearl inside. The clam noticed us quickly and opened it's eyes, letting out a frightening roar-like sound as it yelled at us to leave it alone. I remember it's frightening words ringing in my ears. Pip then took it upon himself to dive into the clam's mouth as it was open, grabbing the giant pink pearl. When he tried to swim out, the clam shut it's mouth and caught Pip's arm.
I let out a cry of help, trying to fight back with everything I had. Unfortunately, I didn't have anything. Pip gave me a dramatic look of sadness and tossed the pearl my way. I grabbed it in my paws and glanced around, trying to find something to help me. In the distance, I saw two figures swimming around. "Help!" I cried, and they turned their head when they heard my pleas.
Instantly they swam towards us, concern flashing in their eyes. It took me a moment, and then I realized I was staring at two lovely mermaids! Their fins flashed rainbow and their pinkish skin was very different then my fur of Pip's fabric. They went to the clam and helped me open the creature's giant mouth, giving Pip enough time to swim out and into my arms as I held him and the pearl. One mermaid held back the clam as the other brought us back to shore, letting us rest on the sand and admire our new prize.
After that we went on many more adventures together. Sometimes we ran into the mermaids, and other times we discovered creatures like the famous Nessie -who wasn't very scary- , Sea Dragons, and even a Hippocamp! We also ran into our share of bad creatures like the dreadful Siren and the horrifying Kelpie. Of course, we always managed to get home and bring a special treasure with us, reminding everyone of the wonderful adventure we both had.
