Explanation/origin of accessory:
I was just a pup, almost old enough to do what I wanted, which meant I was almost old enough to get my feathers. The moon was rising, and my mother was coming to send me to bed. Impatiently, I paced around the house, waiting for her to get home from the workshop.
I bursted with joy when I heard my mothers voice. "Valdez! I'm home!" I ran towards her voice to find her standing by the entrance to our home. She licked my head and I shrunk back.
"Mom..." I complained, pulling away. She just laughed and shooed me along to my room. "Did you make me anything?" I said, jumping up and down. Once a week, my mother would come home with something she made me at the shop. It was usually just a little nicknack, or a decoration. It had become routine. My entire room was filled with the stuff. Mother laughed and continued pushing me along.
"Just you wait and see..." She said, her eyes full of affection. When we got into my room, I laid down on my bed. She licked my head and handed me a pair of goggles. I jumped up and grabbed them in my mouth.
"They're amazing!" I exclaimed, my mouth full. She just laughed and put them on my head. They were resting on my forehead. "Thank you mommy!" She laughed.
"Anytime dear. Just remember, I'll always Be with you." I licked her cheek and laid down, feeling myself crash. An overwhelming tiredness took over my body and I fell asleep, listening to my mother hum me a tune.
It was the next day, and it was growing really late. My mother still hadn't returned, and I was getting worried. I was pacing back and forth in my room as thunder echoed throughout the land. Rain thundered down hard on the ground, almost flooding the field I lived in. "Maybe she's just caught up in the storm..." I thought to myself, growing anxious. When I saw a dark form of a Kia approach home, I ran to the entrance. I assumed it was my mother.
I was wrong.
When the figure reached my home, he definitely wasn't my mother. It was my uncle. His eyes were full of an indescribable pain, and I looked up at him. "Where's mom?" I asked, getting scared. My uncle shook his head, his mane falling in his face.
"Come with me..." He said sadly and led me out of the house.
The rain thundered down on my back, making my fur stick uncomfortably to my skin. My paws were cold and aching from the damp earth, and I had to keep pawing my mane out of my face. A million 'what ifs' were flooding my mind. I couldn't even begin to describe how many there were.
As we walked, my uncle said nothing to me, and I spoke nothing back. It was a scary, uncomfortable silence. Things tensed up between the two of us more when my mother's workshop came into sight.
Well, at least what was left of it.
The place was in ashes and ruins, scorched by a flame that had been put out by the rain. Panicking, I ran into the debris, little splinters getting stuck in my pads. "Mom!" I shouted, looking around frantically. I froze when I found her underneath a wooden post, only her head and he paws sticking out.
I sat down by her and started sobbing. "Mom....." Burying my face into her fur, I burst into tears. She still smelled like herself. The workshop and a slight flowery smell mixed in. She was so beautiful. And she was gone.

A sketch/doodle of that feather, and an explanation: Feather
I must have cried into my mothers dead body for hours, because when I finally looked up, I was alone. The thunder still roared overhead.
I looked down at her body, feeling my heart break a little. She looked so peaceful. It killed me to know she was gone. No more bedtime... No more little nicknacks from the workshop... No more mom.
I laid by her side the entire night, unable to sleep as the rain pelted down on my skin. I refused to leave her side, no matter how miserable I was.
When dawn approached, I looked at the feather wrapped around her wrist. A small, rainbow feather. I had always loved that feather, I thought it brought out her eyes, made her more beautiful. I stuck my claw underneath the string and cut it off, and then wrapping it around my tail. "You promised me you'd always be with me..." I choked out, looking down at her. "And I'm going to hold you up to that promise."
