The rain was cold, and the way they treated him, even colder.

He stood on the hill slightly above the others, watching the rest of his herd nuzzle and choose mates. His "sister" was even being followed around by stallions seeking her as a mate. Did a mare ever show interest in taking him as a mate? No. He was too "rough around the edges", his coloring too weird. His ears pinned as he glared at them, the familiar bitter hurt settling in his chest.

"Valentines' Day," he scoffed. Turning away roughly, he made his way carefully down the hill. Not even a human had provided interest in purchasing him. He might as well be wild again; no owner, no mate, nothing to tie him to this stable. He snorted, a sound that resembled a growl. Well, nothing might not be the entire case. Turning his head to look at a mare across the pasture, he sighed as her beautiful dunalino-patched coat shone in the sunlight. She stood alone, grazing on the bright emerald grass; she had denied every stallion that approached her. Chase hadn't tried to approach her. She was too beautiful for him; she came from the purest Paint bloodlines, the finest breeding that money could buy. She had won many ribbons, and even quite a few rosettes in her time.

Suddenly there was a loud whistle, and the mare raised her head to look at the gate, as did Chase. Bolting for her owner, the paint mare galloped down the gate to nuzzle the brown-haired woman. They seemed to talk then, both of them briefly looking at Chase. He stared intently as he tried to figure out what they were saying. As they looked back to each other, the mare seemed to nod, throwing her head enthusiastically. Amethyst, the human, patted Sola's neck and walked away, coming back with a black halter. But instead of taking the mare, he watched as she began to make her way across the pasture. Had Sola chosen a stallion? It took him a few minutes to realize that both Sola and Amethyst were making their way towards him. He took a step back nervously as Amethyst reached forward to touch his nose.

Trying to keep a calm facade, he allowed the human to pet him; he had to look good for Sola, this was his chance to get the mare of his dreams. As the halter secured around his head, he resisted the urge to rear and yank the rope from her hands. He wasn't used to human contact, but that was about to change. There was a thrill of joy in his chest as he felt Sola's nose rub his shoulder and she fell into step beside him. Maybe Valentines' Day wasn't so bad. Turning his head to look at her with a questioning smile she nuzzled his neck, and after a long four hour drive, they two exited the trailer to Amethyst's ranch.

"Welcome home," Sola whispered.

Aww man. XD I was hoping to see if I could snag this guy as a mate for the red roan lady I just got. Oh well, looks like the search is still on!
