I sat, anxious to see the horses. Even though I already had quite a few, I never had owned a stallion. Today I was adopting a family of three from Cottonwood. A stallion, mare and colt. I was excited for the chance I would give them, the experiences we would have. In truth, I was ecstatic to see them.
A gentle knocking on the door of the adoption building stirred me out of my stupor. "Are they here?" I asked anxiously, the reply was a curt nod. I jumped up and followed the handler out of the building. I gazed around the field until I saw them.
They were amazing. The stallion shimmered with regality, the mare was a tall, delicate creature and the colt was a handsome mix of both. I stared in wonder at them, and then made my way over to them. The stallion whinnied at me and moved closer. Thrilled, I reached out my hand and touched his velvety nose. I grinned as he nickered. The mare nudged my arm and snorted as the foal tried to reach over the fence.
I turned to the handler, "These are mine, right?" The handled smiled and nodded, as if he'd seen many events similar to mine. I beamed and turned back to them. "Good" I said, satisfied beyond mortal comprehension.
Later That Day
I held my breath as the two handlers pulled the excited stallion out of the trailer. They lead him into a nearby pen and let him go. He promptly speed off, neighing urgently to the mare and colt. The mare answered, sounding heartbroken. As the handlers led her out, she leaned towards the pen, but whinnied over her shoulder at her colt. The colt came bounding out, and then ran after his mother. The handlers let them in and the small herd ran around and around, and then settled down and started exploring the paddock. I watched them until the sun went down and the air grew cold. As I lay in bed, I reflected on the events that happened today. I breathed a sigh of relief at the success of my new found family.
