name:
Totoro
I thought it was a quiet, lovely name. It has no relationship to Tess's bird named Totoro, just that I have always liked the name Totoro and I thought it fit this handsome boy perfectly.
short story under 800 words:
I placed my black paw delicately into the cool, spring water, not wanting to stir the tadpoles only two feet away from me. I adjusted the grip on the net that was held tightly in my mouth, lowering myself slowly so I was almost even with the water. I skimmed my net through the water, swiftly picking up the tadpole, but at the same time I stirring up the brown silt at the bottom of the creek. I lifted my net out of the water just enough to leave the tadpole alive.
“They’re quite interesting,” Lilly murmured, looking at the tadpole over my shoulder. I nodded in agreement, and glanced slightly over my shoulder, just barely catching a glimpse of the lovely smile I had always loved. She walked over to the bank next to me and sat down. I dropped the net into the water, sending water flying all over Lilly and me.
“Smooth,” She said, wiping the water off of her face and splashing me back.
“I’d like to see you do it without splashing anyone,” I retorted, flicking my tail so that little droplets sprinkled over her.
“Oh yeah?” Lilly asked, whipping her tail into the water in order to wave water over me. I squinted my eyes closed quickly and splashed her back.
She smiled, blocking the water with her paws.
“If we really want to catch tadpoles, you shouldn’t be stirring up the water, you know,” Lilly muttered, standing up and shaking the droplets of her teal coat. I watched her, then looked down and picked up my net in the water.
“What do you want to do now? We’ve been catching tadpoles for nearly two hours,” I asked, sitting down.
“I know, but it is fun,”
I laughed. I was fun. “We could..have a splash war…” I suggested, raising an eyebrow and casting her a sidelong glance.
“I suppose that works…”
“Okay then,” I said, then quickly scooped up some water and threw it at her.
She chuckled, but was on her feet in two seconds, splashing me back. I backed up down the strip of silt and water, kicking up not only water, but also silt.
“I’m going to get you, Toto!” She screeched as she sloshed after me. I continued to half run, half trip down through the water, avoiding the little blobs of water she splashed at me.
“I don’t think so!” I teased, but soon found I couldn’t run anymore. The rock pile lay before me, ending the silt road. I turned around slowly, putting my paws up. “ I surrender!”
Lilly stopped in front of me, a smirk on her face. “I see,” She replied slowly, but gave me a face full of water before stopping the game of ours.
“I win,” She said in a sing-song voice, before turning on her heel and heading back to where we started.
I trotted after her, humming a bit.
“Toto?” She asked, her back still facing me.
“What?”
“You’re really fun,”
I laughed, “Thank you,”
There was a bit of silence as we both sat down on the bank of the creek, the excitement of the day finally getting to us. Only the chirping of the birds could be heard in the distance.
“You know what?” I asked her, turning to face her.
“Yes?” She asked quietly, looking up at me. Her small, but sweet voice was like music to my ears. The flower had begun to fall from behind her ear and into her vision, making it hard for me not to laugh.
“I like you…you’re an awesome friend to have,”
“I like you too,” She replied, a soft smile dancing across her lips. She blushed a little, like she always did.
I've always loved it. I returned the smile, but deep down I knew she didn't mean it the same way I did.
