Instead of being a torrent of harsh winds and water, Irene is a fiesty mare who brings the sun in her wake. Along with this star, she tows along sand, a gentle summer breeze, love, fire, and even the promise of rebirth. Much like a fire, this legendary mare will destroy anything unfit and in it's place will come new growth. If two lovers spot her under the moon, their time together will end sourly, but if they see her by the light of day, their fondness for eachother will last until death and bring forth much happiness. But, not all of Irene's story has a happy ending. She is cursed to leave a trail of sand wherever she steps, shedding the stuff from her hooves, choking everything beneath it's crushing weight. The sun is her guide, and she often chases him around the earth, keeping pace with his swift course. Although she doesn't hold much with her, Irene is also a symbol for travellers, because she is akin to them. If a dying wandering soul follows her, they will be lead to help that could save their life. The opposite can be said for those who lie and cheat, she will bring down her wrath on them. Irene doesn't appreciate people who are with malevolent purpose.

In the 1800's a small desert village was affected by great tragedy. The village was having a drought and all of its people were dying from thirst. Crops were suffering and livestock were dying out as well. They prayed, chanted, danced, sang, and did anything that they could in hopes that the desert would provide rain. After almost two months without any rainfall half of the village had died. People became angry and started blaming one another. One person in particular. A young man by the name of Daku. He was known for stealing from some of the marketplaces and so the people thought that the desert may be angry at him. They tied him up and burned him. He shouted, "you'll regret what you've done."

The next day the sky became extremely dark. Rain began to pour from the skies. People rejoiced! They filled jars, pans, bags, troughs, and anything that they could with water. Then an strange red beast emerged at the north side of the village. A fiery stallion. It galloped through the center of the poor village and right behind it trailed a sandstorm. Windspeed was at a high and uprooted and destroyed the village. People were buried in sand. Nobody survived but everyone who has heard the tale seems to tell the story in a way that suggests that Daku was the stallion, coming back for his revenge. The superstitious say that if you ever come upon this creature that a sandstorm is to be expected.

Gift/Omen: Kachina is the spirit of battle- but that does not make her evil or a bad omen. When this fiery mares engages in a spinning dance on the horizon at sunset, kicking up dusts and casting light, dancing shadows, it means that the enemy is defeated and the warriors are to return home. But when she stands solemn, and her dark shadow is cast over the land, and covers the village, her red coat like blood in the setting sun's rays, then there will be only mourning and grief for the village.

Kachina has the coat of red blood and the setting sun- be it the blood of the fallen beloved warriors or the blood of the enemy is to be determined by her dances. Her dances, spinning and violent and sudden, is like the frenzy of battle- the rush of adrenaline and courage she brings to those who watch her as she dances in considered a great gift. But when she stands still, and the red spots on her coat looking like the gruesome splatters from a battle now lost, despair washes over the victim, even if he is not the loser of the battle.

Gift/Omen: Not every omen is a good one. When Serafina, as the people who live in the desert call her, is seen galloping on the horizon like a flame in the dying sun, a great calamity will come to the village, as quick and unexpected as the mare herself, but will bring the village to its knees with its wrath. If Serafina comes to hear her neigh, the disaster will be long and devastating. However, legend speaks of a girl who loves horses, who has the fire of Serafina in her soul, who will one day ride the mare, and as soon as they are united, the village will know peace forevermore.

A old elderly woman sat in front of a fire blazing in the cold night of the desert. Children sat down and listened as the wise woman spoke her tale of a Varnish Roan stallion that survived in the place they call home. The night was cold and the stars shone brightly. Deep into the night, a moon had risen, the one the natives called the 'red moon'. This was where the woman began her tale that had started after the first sighting of this mustang.

"It all began on the night of the red moon, it was then that the first person to spot this mustang was able to catch more than just a flash of red. The stallion had merely been a old folk tale to scare children so they would listen to their parents until this night. He was one of power and it showed more and more with each sighting my children. The red moon was a night of peace and rejoice for the natives of the desert, as you know our customs.

"The night was dark, silent except for the occasional whisper from the wind as it passed over the sand dunes. The people were watchful for anything in sight, especially for this unproven legend. It was a young man who spotted the stallion first, only a mere shadow against the dim light from the moon. A flowing short mane and tail seeming black with a red tint. It was a good sighting, the man's wife was later cured from her seemingly dying fate. If he was seem on the night of the red moon it was foreseen as good luck. Ryuk was the name the natives gave this stallion. He brought good omens during one night in the year but he also brought destruction.

"Ryuk, if seen during the day would bring death or extreme grief. Is it said that of you see the Varnished Roan during daylight, within those hours you would die or be stricken with some unknown grief and sink into depression. No one has ever seen the stallion and managed to escape the fate that await then. He was described as having the common appaloosa marking as the other mustangs that roam these deserts freely, though he was of a Mahogany Bay as the unlucky few described. There are others who tell that the stallion passing on what he feels to those unlucky people so he is not reminded of his own grief and the death he has seen.

"During the night, unless on a red moon like this one, it is also stated that if one is to see him running across the sand dunes then there will be no rain for the harsher months to come. Ryuk is a sign that there will be no rain if he is seen any other night than this one, the people suffer for it if one spots him during these nights. Though children, he will only be seen when he reveals himself before he is once again gone like the wind, only to return again a few years later. This will conclude our night as I must retire, a old woman needs her sleep."
The children seemed reluctant that the interesting tale had ended, thus leaving them with the history of the good and bad this Varnished Roan Stallion could cause.

Gift/Omen: It is said that this stallion is, not like the long-haired, a rain-bringer, but his omen also has to do with rain somehow. When he is seen during rain it means that after rain there will soon follow a very warm, sunny period, due to his coat being interpreted as looking like fire. The natives also interprete this as a metaphor, meaning that after hard times in life there will follow good times.

For after she brought gifts, she expected something in return. If not, she preys on the strongest, or the youngest of the tribe. First, she tries to take the youngest child, yet if there are no children she tries something else... WIP
