You may be asking yourself, what exactly is a hover fox anyway?
Hover foxes are cuddly, adorable fox hybrids with unusually large furry ears. As infants they are born with very small, proportional-sized ears, but as they reach childhood, those ears grow so large they can use them to hover a little bit above the ground and glide short distances. Of course, that can't last and by the time they reach adulthood they do grow into their ears a bit and are no longer able to use them for 'flight'. Their diet consists of seafood and different types of sweet and sour fruit, depending on their taste preference and where they live. Most HFs grow to be the size of a german shepherd, though you'll occasionally get some that are larger.
Tiny paws skittered across the floor, violet eyes wide with terror, breaths coming in short bursts as the infant fox ran. Out the door it went, disappearing into a snowdrift before reappearing as it continued to bound away. A shot rang out behind it and the baby scurried faster, finally reaching the treeline and disappearing into the snowy forest.
The night came and with it, a chill so fierce, the fox was sure it would die alone. 'Better than back in that death house.' It thought as it shivered. The young fox struggled to keep its eyes open, knowing that if it were to sleep, it would succomb to cold within a matter of hours.
It managed to resist a while longer, but finally, tiny eyes closed and breathing grew shallow in sleep.
It woke, cradled gently in warm arms. The soft sound of a motor humming alerted it to the fact that it was no longer lying in the snow. Warm air blew from vents onto its still quivering body. "Don't worry little one, everything is alright now. You're safe."
Alrighty, this contest is going to be a little different. It will be a short story contest, yes. However, your job is to write what happened before the blurb above. Fill in the blank. What happened before then? How did the fox get into what it called the 'death house' and what brought it to the conclusion that the house was not a safe home? Be creative, that's all I ask.
You may add extras if you'd like, though you don't have to.
