Zayna trotted awkwardly along, just as she always did. Braze, a stocky black-and-white stallion pony, half-walked half-skipped behind her, his short legs trying to keep up with the bright mare in front of him. "Hey, slow down! It's not my fault your stride is longer than my body!" he took a few bounds forward, finally even with her, and tried to catch his breath. Within seconds he was behind again, but his tail swished happily behind him. "So," Braze began, "are you finally going to let me take a rest?" he neighed. Zayna glared at him, then rolled her eyes with a grin, "Seriously, Braze, we've only been walking a few miles!"
"EXACTLY!" he puffed, speeding up to match her pace again. Suddenly both of them stopped. "Did you hear that?" Braze asked, looking at Zayna curiously. The buttermilk-colored mare nodded, glancing about, "I heard it just fine."
A low growl rumbled nearby, flittering in from the right. A sudden flash danced across her vision, before a tan blurr pounced on Zayna. She screeched in shock and in the corner of her eye caught the sight of a desert lion clinging onto her back. Blackness slowly closed in on her, but then the weight was lifted off of her, and the wail rang in her ears. She stood up, turning around frantically.
Braze! It will get Braze! she panicked and fell onto her side. Shaking her head, she managed to make out two clear shapes: one kicking and whinnying, the other darting away.
Braze raced to her side, scratches lining his sides, but a prideful smile on his face, "Are you okay?" Zayna's eyes glowed. The short-legged, giddy pony had saved her. "How... what... th... thank you!" she nudged him with her golden face. Braze pushed her away, a bit embarrassed, "Well I could have finished him off if you would have let me rest!"
