He lacks friends due to his sinister look, also because he lacks a "people friendly" manner, and so he has turned cold and heartless towards others due the bullying in earlier days. But even so, he's just misunderstood and lonely -- merely seeking a friend with whom he can joke around with -- the only thing he seems good at. He also want's to others smile while he's around, not frowning upon his dark looks or his deemed wicked ways. For them to be happy to see him. So often he asks, "why so serious?" Hoping that they'll crack a smile just like his.
