Baby Sunflower Rune

Kernel

Owner: Tano
Gender: Male
Type: Baby Sunflower Rune

"Congratulations, it's a boy!"

"This bright little boy is the offspring of Iggy and Nymph. His appearance certainly takes after his mother's more flowery side and is mostly seen among the tall stalks of sunflower fields. His happy demeanor and ever present smile uplifts those around him as he tends to the seeds that fall from the tall flower. Sunflower Runes can be seen collecting the seeds of these flowers and planting them in fertile ground so more may bloom. They are even used to help farmers gather them for trade and as a salty treat for children and Runes. While this little boy can only collect a few seeds at a time due to his small size, he loves to carry around some of the smaller sunflowers and present them as gifts to guest and friends alike."

Judging for forms ends November 14th midnight CS time.

Owner Name:
Sphie
Bearer Name:
Silver Vivizae
Why do you wish to have him/her:
Adorbableness, to sum it up in a word.
He seems so bright and sunny and oh-so-happy, so who wouldn't want him? :D
I think he would get along great with my other rune, Canvas, too.
Where will you keep him/her:
My Character Thread, and depending on sizing
and such I might be able to put him in my signature.
Name:
Expecto Lux, meaning "Look for the Light".
Gender:
Male
Personality:
Optimistic|Contended|Curious
Expecto is cheerful, an attitude that is quite contagious. He loves to pick out the good of a situation, often making it his own game to do so. He is calm and contended, happy to just observe life. He is not particularly outgoing, simply because he is happy to let others go on with what they do, though he is not in any way unfriendly.
Personality Pros: Happy, cheerful, encouraging.
Personality Cons: Vague, occasionally oblivious.

Would you like to breed him in the future:
I might consider such in the future, but it would be a while off.
Any Quirks:
Such a strange little rune, Expecto likes to eat his kind's namesake, sunflower seeds.
He also likes pumpkin seeds and peanuts, so it could just be that he likes to eat nuts and seeds.
He also loves lemongrass scented anything.
His dream come true would probably be a field of lemongrass on a sunny day.

Poem:
Since the beginning, it has been told,
Undying happiness is worth more than gold.
Never has there been reason to doubt,
Lies are not things of which proverbs spout.
I believe in joy,
Goodwill and cheer,
Happiness ringing for all to hear.
To each and every, may Sunlight appear.

Story:
Expecto awoke with the dawn, quickly shaking away any tiredness remaining from the night. Today felt important, special.
Hopping up from his small nest cradled in the split of a sunflower stalk, Expecto climbed to the top of the flower to view the rising sun. Orange, pink, and purple blended themselves beautifully into the natural masterpiece, one of the best he had seen yet. The sunrise surely was his favorite time of the day, the light coming back to warm the cold earth, chasing away darkness and fear, a symbolic wonder as much as literal.
Focusing on his hunger after not eating all night, he nibbled at the sunflower head, crunching the seeds open, the deliciousness very special to him. Perhaps he might even fly over to the pumpkin fields today to look for sun-baked pumpkin seeds. Yes, perhaps he would, but it could wait for later.
Expecto heard a sound, something stirring on the ground, rustling the sunflower stalks. Looking down, he saw a human and a Rune Dragon lying on the ground, both beginning to stir. He folded two sunflower heads around himself, hiding while he determined the intent of the two, realizing even as he did so that they had been sleeping and probably weren't dangerous. Nonetheless, he stayed hidden, not feeling like intruding upon their sleep just yet.
The human yawned, sitting up to stretch, much to the displeasure of the rune dragon that had been asleep on her chest, and now tumbled down. The human mumbled something that could be interpreted as sounding like an apology, scooping up the Rune that was now attempting to give her the cold shoulder.
Expecto leaned out of his makeshift camouflage a bit, accidentally losing balance. As he tumbled out of the top layer of sunflowers, he attempted to right himself with his wings, which were unfortunately not that strong yet. The prismatic rune dragon saw him first, flapping her wings to fly and catch him, while making sure to hit the human at least a little with her wing tips. She reached out with her claws, catching hold of the little dragon's tail. He squeaked a small "Thanks," before scrambling to the ground.
"Hello," He said. "Thank you for saving me, miss..." He trailed off not knowing the name of the either the dragoness nor the human.
"Canvas is fine," She replied in the language of the rune dragons. "I am Canvas, and this is Silver," she said, gesturing with her wing toward the human, who nodded as though understanding. "She can understand me, but not most runes, for some reason. What is your name though, little tumbler?" She asked, smiling the slightest bit.
"My name is Expecto Lux, but anyone calls me Expecto."
She nodded. "Expecto, huh? Pleased to meet you."
"And I as well," said Silver, apparently catching some of his speech. "Do you live here, Expecto?" she asks him.
"I do." He says simply.
"On your own?" she inquires.
"Yes. Why do you ask?"
"Well," she begins, looking at Canvas, who continues her sentence. "You could travel with us, mayhaps? We are currently traveling, albeit usually less exposed," Canvas says, sweeping her wings about to imply the field. "We haven't met another rune before this, though. I'm sure we would get on well." Canvas smiled, as did Silver, waiting for my reply. It was a sudden offer, but a tempting one. The fields were very serene and calm, a beautiful and easy place to live, but he knew that soon enough the fields would be harvested, leaving him without a home until they were grown again in the spring. It would also be nice to see more of the world that he knew so little of, aside from this, his own little corner. It was hardly a real choice, when boiled down.
"I'm in."

Mini-Story
(I recommend playing this while reading this.)
"Ready?" Canvas asks Expecto, moving a few of the paint brushes over with her tail.
"Yup!" He replies. The looks over everything set up: A paint palette and various paints, a canvas, and an assortment of paintbrushes.
Expecto is getting an art lesson.
"Okay then," Canvas starts, "You can start off by choosing what you want to paint."
It took all of two seconds for Expecto to choose. "A sunflower!"
"A bit full of ourselves, are we?" Canvas says jokingly. "A sunflower would probably look best with a dark background. Go ahead and use one of the larger brushes like so..." She pauses to paint her own canvas dark gray, using her tail to hold the brush. "There, now you try."
Expecto attempts to pick up the brush with his own tail, dropping it several times, before trying with his claws, and finally his mouth, none of which provide any fruit for his labors.
Canvas rubs her neck, thinking of a way for him to paint without holding the brush in any way already tried.
"I know! Why don't you use your tail as the brush?" she suggests hopefully.
"Won't Silver get upset if I get messy?"
"Not if you clean yourself up afterward." she says confidently.
Deciding to trust her, Expecto dips his tail in the paint, choosing a dark brown and smearing it across his canvas.
"Good! Now just smooth the edges a bit..." Canvas chimes in, helping when necessary.
Next they start on the petals.
Choosing a light gold, Expecto uses the tip of his tail to paint the shape of a petal onto the dark base, and then another, and another. Paint drips from his tail to the floor, and he continues painting until a ring of gold is completed on his canvas.
"Good, now let's fill in the center before we shade it."
Paint continues to drip, unnoticed by the two happy little dragons.
"And now we'll add the shading and highlights. Oh, don't blend the colors, though!"
Splash, drip, drip, drip, splash...
Finally, two amazing paintings are shown for their work.
"Good job! Who would ever guess it's you first time painting?" Canvas says excitedly, before turning to see the mess on the floor and, somehow, on the walls and ceiling.
"Oh, I sincerely hope Silver isn't back for a while."

Despite the fact that I dearly love this little guy, I just don't have the time to put my full effort forth into this form. But who ever wins him, can he and Ellayne be great friends?

Kernel, the Baby Sunflower Rune

Postby Tano-kun » Wed Nov 07, 2012 5:05 pm

Image

Owner Name:
Tano

Name:
ImageImage

Image
Gender:
Male

Personality:
Kernel is a total nature lover. His bread and butter is his ability to fly through the crisp midday air, over his beloved sunflower garden and the glimmering ocean. He gets along well with other Runes, as well as other creatures, but finds that he is most able to enjoy himself when he is surrounded by nature. He's a very cheerful Rune, who frequently can be found humming or singing a catchy tune. He's devoted to his garden like his life depends on it, and reveres his sunflowers like an ultimate being. Their light and ability to grow in weather that wilts most other things makes him believe that they are persistent and powerful.

Any Quirks:
He likes to lick things. Anything. It could be a bug, a flower, a piece of paper, a companion, you name it! He likes to taste everything!
And along with that, he loves jelly. All kinds, made from every kind of berry he can find!

Image

Image
I've been stalking this species for a very, very long time. I love the concept, and the effort that goes into each individual design. Not to mention, they're all just super duper adorable (or awesome, as the case may be). This little guy, though, is the first I've ever applied for, because I'm picky. Honestly, I'd love to have this guy as a companion for my spoiled little Kiamara, Chiron. I think the two would compliment each other well, in both appearance and personality. Where Chiron is dark and sullen, this little guy is bright and cheerful.

Image

Where will you keep him:
Character threads (both my main thread as well as Chiron's personal thread), and I'll probably add him to my signature on occasion; as I try to alternate which character is there.

Would you like to breed him/her in the future:
Possibly, but most likely not. Unless another Rune owner or admirer likes the lines so much that they'd want to adopt a child of his, in which case I would indeed breed him.

Art:
Unfortunately, my personal art abilities are very, very limited, so I most likely will not be posting any. I do apologize for that. However, if you go to my character's thread, you can see that I do love to buy art of my precious characters. I promise you that this little Rune will be spoiled with art, should I be chosen to adopt him.

Image
I've completed his story, but was informed that it was much too long for an entry. So, here's the shortened version.
If you'd be interested in the original, full length version, it can be found here.

I would also like to note that the original concept for the story is from ɾïṿεṉḋεll.
I did get permission to use the general idea, so a great thanks to rivendell for that! <3

Kernel's Flight

The ocean breeze lifted the bright dragon as he hovered over his favorite garden, full of his favorite flowers. The sun shone brightly over all the inhabitants of the island, both plant and animal alike. Though it must be noted that many of the animal islanders had sought shade on such a scorching day. Not this dragon, however. Oh no, he thrived in the harsh weather. Just like his favorite flowers, the summer was his best friend and companion. Only under the summer sun could he shine so brilliantly, fly so quickly, and love so wholeheartedly. The breeze carried him up and up, and drew him back and forth over the crest of his garden’s boundaries to the sands of the nearby ocean. Just like the moon pushed and pulled the ocean every day, he was pulled into the ocean, and pushed back. The two most important things for a sunflower were water and light, and he was no different.

His musings were interrupted, however, when a strong gust of wind drove him into a downwards spiral towards the edge of his sunflower garden, into the nearby forest. The wind was relentless, and shoved him into numerous branches as it threw him towards the forest floor. Had he been paying attention to the winds, he would have averted this disaster, but his mind easily wandered. And so he crashed through the branches, getting scratched up and banged around all the way down. And when finally, the forest floor could be seen, the Rune did his best to keep a position that would allow him a safe landing. Just before reaching a safe altitude, the wind threw another gust at the small dragon, and his position was changed, and he landed onto the ground with a painful whack. A wave of pain hit him, and it was all he could do to not cry out in pure agony. Without having to look, the young one knew his wing had been broken. The pain drove him to sleep, for it was the only way his body was able to cope with such stress. And so the Rune’s eyes drooped, and he fell into a deep slumber.

When we awoke, his pain was not as great as it had been, and he was in his own home. Sleeping on his own nest. There was little joy for him, however, as he quickly recalled the pain that had reverberated throughout his being, as the one thing all Runes feared had happen. His wing had been broken. It may be a very long time before he was able to fly again. And he didn’t know what he’d do until then. He sighed, and fell back into his comfy nest, and forced himself to go back to sleep.

Later he was informed by the healer Marie that it would be at least a month before he would be able to fly again. Kernel couldn’t sleep for a very long time after that, and went through stages of disbelief, pain, and true abysmal sadness in which he simply sat and cried. Eventually, his tears ran no more, and he had nothing else to do but escape to a dream world where he could fly to his heart’s content. A few days passed slowly for the land-bound Rune, who had quickly lost his appetite, and was rapidly losing weight and feathers. He no longer looked like an even remotely healthy Rune, and he received no visitors save for Marie. But even she limited her time as much as she could, because she had seen too many Runes decay and spiral to their falls. She refused to watch another.

While staring blankly at his collection of odds and ends near his bed, there was a rap at the base of Kernel’s tree. He paid it no heed at first, but it repeated for minutes on end. Finally, he forced himself out of his little nest to the hole used as a door to his hideaway. Careful not to get too close to the edge, the young Rune looked down, for he knew that no Rune capable of flight would knock on his tree for his attention. And indeed he was right. Standing below him was a Kiamara. His eyes, normally very dull, showed some light, and his head cocked to the side in confusion. In a raspy voice he asked, “What are you doing here?” He was bewildered at the situation facing him. There was no logical explanation for this creature to be visiting him; for any creature to be visiting him, at that.

The Kiamara looked as though he found it awkward to speak, however, but tried his best, “I um, know you’re not in the best of shape, but I have a favor to ask of you.

Oh, Kernel’s interest was piqued. What could he possibly do for this Kiamara that the brute wouldn’t do himself? He scoffed at the notion, and responded in a tone that dripped annoyance, “What is it?

The Kiamara paid no heed to the tone behind the question, and directly told the young dragon what his request was, and why he was requesting it, “Well, I was asked to gather some sunflower seeds, but find that I am unable to complete the task on my own.

Excited at the thought of being able to leave his stuffy hideaway, Kernel agreed, and proceeded to carefully hop down the branched of his tree until he reached the lowest one. This was where it would become difficult. The other male, being extra sensitive to the others needs all of a sudden, got closer to the tree’s bark, and jumped up with his front paws resting on the trunk, decreasing the gap that the Rune would have to fall substantially.

Kern hesitated, because the drop was still larger than he felt comfortable with. But, he closed his eyes and jumped. The Kiamara caught him faster than he had expected, and he landed with a light thud onto the creature’s head. Opening his eyes, he noted that he was unharmed, and sighed in relief. “The name’s Chiron, by the way,” the Kiamara announced, causing the Rune to jump slightly.

Well, Chiron, you may proceed to the garden. Assuming you know where they are?” He added the last part as an afterthought, as he realized that few of the island’s inhabitants actually knew its location. Few ventured so far out of the village, so it would probably be safe to say that this Chiron would not know its location.

Yeah, it’s not too far from the village.” And with that, Chiron began to walk towards the sunflower field, a distance away by foot. Kernel’s thoughts quickly turned to the rush of the wind against his feathers. Though they weren’t traveling fast, they still had enough momentum to get some air circulating past Kernel. And he was loving it! He took in every ounce of it he could get, loving the feel of it and the sun beating down on him through the leaves overhead.

Once they exited the forest, heading for the cliff that the flowers resided on, the beauty and feelings of freedom again washed over Kern. He closed his eyes, and lifted his wings out, to regain the feeling of flight. Chiron noticed, and sped up his pace, still keeping to a safe speed. The extra rush really made Kern feel as though he was again flying through his beloved sky, over the beautiful sunflowers, and shimmering ocean. For minutes they kept it up, Kern not even noticing that Chiron had changed course so that they were running back and forth along the cliff.

When finally Kernel opened his eyes, any trance of the miserable Rune was gone. He was back to his old self, full of light and energy, and love for his land and family. He pulled his wings back in, and let out a great sigh of contentment. He looked over the cliff to the ocean, and smiled without pain. He would fly again, he knew it. He wouldn’t let his spirits be crushed by a little time without flight. He had something to look forward to, and would never let himself fall into a depression so deep again. He closed his eyes again, with the smile still pulling at his mouth, “Thank you, Chiron.

The Kiamara slowed down to a normal walk, and wandered back over to the sunflower garden. He said nothing, but let Kern off of his head, and let the Rune take in the brilliance of the flowers. They still thrived without him, for they had what they required to live. They were still bright, without their caretaker, and did not fall under the harsh winds. He would live to be like his flowers, and he would survive this broken wing. It would heal, and he would again be able to fly like he used to. With determination in his heart, the small Rune climbed up the smallest sunflower stalk he could find, and gather as many of the seeds as he could. Once done, he gave them to Chiron with a great smile.

I can’t thank you enough for that,” his eyes met the Kiamara’s golden orbs, “Whether intended or not, you’ve saved me from what would have been a pathetic death.” Chiron laid down on his belly, and brought his head to level with the Rune’s, and gave him a smile. He said nothing, but his eyes said everything. Somehow, he understood Kernel, and was happy to have been able to help. Carefully, Kern lifted his good wing to his face, and pulled out two golden feathers. He placed them at Chiron’s paws, and left the Kiamara to wander his garden. Hours later, he returned to his home, with the help of the Kiamara, completely refreshed, and eager to fly again.
