To me, his dark coat and random white birdcatcher spots suggest the dark and fading time of Winter, so possibly the scientific side, such as the solstice and the cause of winter, or perhaps a more poetic and story book approach, maybe focusing on the way winter and snow is portrayed in books such as Charles Dickens or other authors.
