Whup, Whup, Whup... My brown eyes fluttered open as the sound of the chopper blades slowing entered my ears. The big grey machine finally landed, not yet off, but my team and I were already off and analyzing the area. I was a trainee for the Alabaster guard, today being my first field day, and my first day out, since they had taken me. My memories were hazy at best, similar to an old television that on certain channels would stutter and shift, before turning to gray zig-zag lines. The only thing I currently knew, was that I was a soldier; meant to study, learn, obey, and execute, all in the name of Alabaster and for the downfall of all Runes and their bearers. I signaled to my three mates the all clear sign before we all moved forward and out, commencing our mission.

Alabaster city leaders wanted to expand their glorious city, which is what we were here doing today, except there were further motives to their plans, which none of us knew anything of. I was treading lightly, not even having to try avoiding sticks and branches, as it was already ingrained into my mind from training. I moved around low-hanging branches, cautiously and quietly moving away curtains of moss that so helplessly blocked my way, almost as if they suspected their soon to become fate of concrete and skyscrapers. I came upon and rocky outcrop moving swiftly around the boulders and smaller stones, though too swiftly, for by the next step I took, I lost my footing on the unsteady rocks, and fell to the ground, twisting my ankle. I only grimaced, not even gritting my teeth, I was used to this kind of pain, we were trained to be. I put my gun in its holder, sliding it behind my back, before shuffling my hands and beginning to push myself up.

It was until I felt a pulse, that I drew my hand away faster than the rewind of a viper attacking, and fell once again on my bum on the bumpy gravelly ground. I swished away the dust cloud that collected around me, pushing my hair, once the same color of my eyes, now mixed with white, behind my back, before looking again. I saw my hand print a little more distinctly on a stone to my right, though unlike the stones around it, it had an orange hue to it. I pulled it out, and after dusting it off, I rubbed my hand once over the interesting mark again, leaving it, when a rush of images came into my mind: my memories... Everything came back to me, the death of my parents, the way they took me from my home, and the way they brainwashed and beat me, all the mistreatment; I wanted to cry though I stayed strong because right after the memories came back, I felt as though the stone was calling to me, asking for me to help it; as crazy as that sounds.

I threw off all my equipment, only leaving the essentials, before using all the strength I could muster, to get up, and run. I didn't look back, even though I could hear the chopper taking off, coming towards me; for hours I traveled until I came upon a small Rune who lead me to Benathorn's cottage. I told her that I didn't believe I deserved the egg, the Drake that I found out was inside, instead of the Rune I thought it was; I tried giving it to her, but as I did, it glowed, shaking a bit, before Bena told me I was meant to have it. That night, I slept in one of her spare rooms, in my dream I heard a voice telling me, You and I are fated to be together young one, the giver of life has granted me another chance, cheating the Ancient of Death of my soul, for we both have a greater purpose, I woke up the next day, looking at the egg in my arms, knowing inside my heart, that this was where I was supposed to be...

It was like any other calm summer day; the sun beat hard down upon the golden plains, long honeyed grasses swaying and whispering in the wind; the sky was bright blue in contrast to the richly coloured fields, and in the distance there was the faded green tree line of a vast forest. A single grey mare cantered leisurely across the expanse, grasses rolling in the wake of her speed; she bore one rider, garbed in simple greens and browns with a deep black cloak billowing in their wake. How rich Eldemore was in any season, but the man, known as Caedan, found himself preferring the warmth and bright light of summer- there wasn’t much like travelling across this empty golden vista with only the horse and the wind to break the peaceful silence. A dent appeared in the grasses beyond them, and brush and even a few trees dared to grow along the river’s far bank as it snaked across the plains; however when they came upon it, they discovered the stony bank to be too steep to travel down. Dismounting to peer over the edge, Caedan found himself almost dizzied by the steep drop; since the last time he’d been here, the land had changed, and he couldn’t help but wonder what had happened. Suddenly, the earth crumbled beneath him with a sickening rumble, and he knew no more.

Bright grey eyes clear as the dawn blinked open to the faint and far-off sound of his mare’s whinny. Sitting up, disoriented, he raised a long-fingered hand to touch a swelling lump on his head with a wince; he lay on the edge of the small river, legs submerged in the water, shivering, but his upper body thankfully rested beyond and dry. The mini-avalanche had been small, but unfortunately he’d been caught in it and must have hit his head on a stone as he fell. Holding his fingers to his lips, he let out a piercing whistle that rose into the still summer air; presently the clop of hooves announced his faithful mare’s presence, and he pulled himself to his feet, meaning to leave. But something stopped him. Turning round on sore feet, he was faced suddenly with the yawning mouth of a cave.

The anxious nickering of his mare quieted in his ears; he scratched her withers absentmindedly with a single hand as he looked her over for wounds. But the depths of the cave drew his attention once he’d secured her safety; though the mini-avalanche had been frightening, neither Caedan or his horse had sustained injuries, and he was content with that- it was highly unlikely it should happen again. And so, he stepped inside the cave. It was dark, and a faint musty smell of long-dead things caught at the back of his throat; the rough stone walls leaned in close as he stepped through the passageway, as if in a trance. A faint, orange light flickered and pulsed like the dancing of flames; a scent not far from the smell of woodsmoke, but fiercer. Something seemed to tug at him, drawing him deeper.

And he came upon the egg. Everything was of stone; it appeared there had been a nest here, once upon a time, but everything was dead now, fossilized... eerie. The egg sat nestled in the middle of an indent in the ground, surrounded by faint imprints of what could have been brothers and sisters, once upon a time. It was of a rich earthen hue, mottled just slightly in darker places, but it gave off a singular light all its own, and Caedan did not doubt the tremendous force of life he could feel emanating from it; from its sheer size alone, he knew it could only be an egg of the rare and elusive Rune Drakes. A lucky accident had led Caedan here, and the tug of his heart had showed him the way; now, he did not doubt his small, strange family had just grown in size, and some far-off hole in his at times lonely existence had just been filled. He was honoured to have a chance to raise the drake as his own; somehow, it just felt right.

The parched desert of the northern continent seethed in the heat of the mid day sun, golden rays meeting golden sands. Harsh and beautiful, though I believed it more harsh at the time, as I wiped the sweat from my brow. I had traveled for days in this heat, my body scorched during the day, and frozen in the night, as I chased a phantom across the sands. Perhaps the great Drake was simply a mirage, a trick of the desert, but something drove me to continue after it, find it, at all costs. My heart would not be deterred by my mind.

I reached back for the canteen that hung at my waist, lifting it to my lips and savoring the last few drops of sweet moisture that were left. Scanning the horizon for any sign of an oasis, I tried not to flinch at the sight of the everlasting golden sands staring back at me. I caught a glimpse from the corner of my eye, and knew the phantom image had come to guide me again, closer to my heart's desire. My feet dragged across the shifting sands with a mind of their own, chasing the trail of the phantom across the desert and into the frigid night.

I looked up at the starry sky a few hours later, shivering in a small blanket as I tried to rest. With no water left and no oasis on the horizon, it seemed I would not last long. I wrapped the cloth blanket tighter around my shaking form, tears forming in my eyes. I watched the stars twinkle down at me, as if telling me that the hardships were soon over. I only recall blackness after that as I drifted into sleep.

I dreamed, the winds whipping the sands around me harshly. Tears came to my eyes as I lifted my hand to protect them, hair flying in the reckless breeze before finally settling. I looked up, and see the figure of the phantom Drake I was following, it's form made up of wind and swirling sand. It's great jaws opened and the softest words I'd ever heard were spoken in only my mind. "I have found you once more..." he whispered, a fragile egg seeming to materialize at my side as I continued to rest.

Hope you like this - it was the first thing I thought of when I saw that little egg, and I've been rethinking it over for a few days. Might still edit, but I think I like it where it is now.

How I found Kin?

Well, you would never believe it, but I was in a cave -Yes, I said it, a cave- with my younger brother, the archeocologist. His name is Aden, a tall and skinny boy with a blaze of firey scarlet hair, and a love for the history and form of the earth. Anyways, he finally managed to drag me along with him on one of his expeditions, one that took him to a cave deep underground and on the edge of a desert, and only on the conditions that I got to bring along Tien, my own flashlight, and that he didn't tease me about my fear of the dark. When we arrived at the cave, Aden looked at me for confirmation, before we stepped into the darkness that shrouded us.

Strolling along through the cave, we stopped constantly, the brilliant redhead that was my brother writing in quick chicken-scratch handwriting all the findings we stumbled upon. We cataloged hundreds of fossils over the course of a full sleepless day, before the unthinkable happened... Stumbling over an upright rock, I tumbled down the steep slope of a tunnel hidden by shadows, hearing the immistakable "THUNK" and shatter of my flashlight cracking. Sitting up with a bit of difficulty and stiffness, I reached my hand up to rub my throbbing head, a jolt of terror flashing through me as the sticky sensation of blood laying upon my slim fingers.

Tien was nowhere to be seen -Not to mention Aden, the idiot who had convinced me to join him in the first place- or heard, and the pitch-black cave was getting to me more and more with each passing moment. Backing tighter against the wall of the cavern, I pulled my legs up to my chest, and ripped my sleeve in the darkness and wrapped it around the diameter of my head. I don't know how long I remained there, but after what seemed like a long while in the silence, a small amber glow seemed to emerge from near my right foot. Dropping my eyes to what seemed like a hallucination, the small, orb-shaped rock near my foot transformed into that of a Rune's egg. It seemed to call to me, as I reached down with shaky and crimson stained fingers to lift it closer.

The egg was unlike any of those I had seen in my lifetime, and had a strong beating sensation that immediately soothed me, as I cradled it close to my chest. After clutching it protectively for a long while, I heard the distant call of my brother, and the worried chirrup of Tien coming down the tunnel. Then, as if time were put in fast forwards, they were suddenly in front of me, their eyes full of worry as Aden pulled me into a hug, apologizing for dragging me along on this expedition, as I reasurred him shakily that I was fine. The thing is, as long as Kin -The egg which I had come to call Kindled, or Kin for short- is by my side, I'm not afraid of the creatures the darkness that the caves might hold, or what hides in that inky darkness. Without that expedition, or the scar that remains hidden in my hair, I would have never been linked to my darling Kin, or as close to my brother as I am now. Kin has changed my life for the better, giving me a new outlook on the past and possible future.

((thanks for the opportunity to own such a beautiful rune drake, and I wish you the best of luck in finding a forever home for him, bena. :3 ))

A sharp howl awoke me from my tireless sleep. This was the third night that my rest was interrupted by strange dreams; something was summoning me but whenever I drew close to the presence I would awake with a start. Tonight's dream had started off no different than others but the untimely end set my nerves on high alert. Another sharp howl broke through the cold night air and brought me to my feet. The raptors were hunting.

Unusual for those ferocious beasts to be out hunting at this time of night, especially this time of year where the wind blows cold off the great lake. Hunting is done more in tune with the rise and fall of the late autumn sun so what did they find that needed attention so long past night fall when their heat reserves are almost gone? I suppose it doesn't matter much. If they are hunting, then they do not notice they are also being hunted; their claws and teeth are valuable trade for lone Rune Soldiers.

Whatever they were chasing must have taken up shelter within that small cave in the cliff side - lucky creature. The landslide three days ago sealed most of the entrance and the raptors' heads are too big to fit through the slim opening. I take the clear shot and ground one; it's great bulk falls hard against the cold earth with a solid thud. The others flee into the night, still afraid of the sound of gun shots. I should have been satisfied and take my trophy back to the camp but a familiar feeling comes over me and I am drawn towards the cave.

Squeezing into the recess I find no frightened creature or injured quarry, just a rock pile on the far side. My dreams suddenly flash in the back of my mind as I step towards the pile, transfixed on the larger rock in the center. Extending my hand slowly, my fingertips graze over the smooth, warm surface until I am holding the large stone - no, egg. This is the presence, this unborn creature, that has been calling out to me for the past nights; crying for help. Well fret not, little one, you will be safe with me.

The harsh wind slipped under my hood daring to tear it from my wind and sand burnt face. Walking through the spares desert was probably not my wisest mission for a new rune but none the less it was needed as my spirit felt drawn once again to the deserts. Both Danika and Marlow were desert runes and they both adored the sands. At this very moment we were wandering near a large oasis that Danika had found only moments before nestled among the sparse trees and waters edge. The entrance was small but just big enough for us to enter without a scratch.

After finishing dinner I had decided to explore the cave more and found images etched into the walls. Depicting a story of a Rune lost in time and as i looked over the pictures i noticed it was showing that the very cave we had set up camp was something of great important to these old Runes. I grinned wide when the last image depicted an unhatched egg. Hoping that time had not fossilized the egg i whistled to Marlow and Danika who came trundling towards me two fire branches in mouth. After looking at the sweet pair i took both torches for fear of them burning themselves and we headed into the darker under passages that seemed like a maze.
~~~~~~~
Some time had passed since we had begun our trek through the winding tunnels and it came as a huge shock when we finally came to a cavernous room. Its ceiling at least four stories high and walls so far apart you could swear a town could fit inside. Taking in the small light orbs created by a few glowing worms I wondered why i no longer heard the pita pata of clawed feet. Looking down to my feet i noticed both my runes had stopped dead in the tracks looking to a huge mound of rocks with unease. It seemed almost like a funeral mound but you could see the remnants of furs and hides laid over the top as if to create warmth for something. Grinning i moved forward without a care.
After Climbing the mound Danika came to nestle her head on my leg and look to the rocks while Marlow marched forward and kicked at the largest and darkest rock making me laugh at him as he fell on his butt and whined at me but something then caught my eye.
There were a few small amber pieces that started to glow as I moved closer i reached out with my hand to glide over the rocks surface and found it warm, my hand hit the rune etched into the front making me jump. It started to slightly hum and its colour once dull and boring now began to what seemed like warm up. Finally it pulsed slightly with magic making me grin from ear to ear knowing in my heart i had found the rune i was searching for. Sadly not knowing its origin i would need to visit the wonderful Thorn Cottage.
