Whup, Whup, Whup... My brown eyes fluttered open as the sound of the chopper blades slowing entered my ears. The big grey machine finally landed, not yet off, but my team and I were already off and analyzing the area. I was a trainee for the Alabaster guard, today being my first field day, and my first day out, since they had taken me. My memories were hazy at best, similar to an old television that on certain channels would stutter and shift, before turning to gray zig-zag lines. The only thing I currently knew, was that I was a soldier; meant to study, learn, obey, and execute, all in the name of Alabaster and for the downfall of all Runes and their bearers. I signaled to my three mates the all clear sign before we all moved forward and out, commencing our mission.
Alabaster city leaders wanted to expand their glorious city, which is what we were here doing today, except there were further motives to their plans, which none of us knew anything of. I was treading lightly, not even having to try avoiding sticks and branches, as it was already ingrained into my mind from training. I moved around low-hanging branches, cautiously and quietly moving away curtains of moss that so helplessly blocked my way, almost as if they suspected their soon to become fate of concrete and skyscrapers. I came upon and rocky outcrop moving swiftly around the boulders and smaller stones, though too swiftly, for by the next step I took, I lost my footing on the unsteady rocks, and fell to the ground, twisting my ankle. I only grimaced, not even gritting my teeth, I was used to this kind of pain, we were trained to be. I put my gun in its holder, sliding it behind my back, before shuffling my hands and beginning to push myself up.
It was until I felt a pulse, that I drew my hand away faster than the rewind of a viper attacking, and fell once again on my bum on the bumpy gravelly ground. I swished away the dust cloud that collected around me, pushing my hair, once the same color of my eyes, now mixed with white, behind my back, before looking again. I saw my hand print a little more distinctly on a stone to my right, though unlike the stones around it, it had an orange hue to it. I pulled it out, and after dusting it off, I rubbed my hand once over the interesting mark again, leaving it, when a rush of images came into my mind: my memories... Everything came back to me, the death of my parents, the way they took me from my home, and the way they brainwashed and beat me, all the mistreatment; I wanted to cry though I stayed strong because right after the memories came back, I felt as though the stone was calling to me, asking for me to help it; as crazy as that sounds.
I threw off all my equipment, only leaving the essentials, before using all the strength I could muster, to get up, and run. I didn't look back, even though I could hear the chopper taking off, coming towards me; for hours I traveled until I came upon a small Rune who lead me to Benathorn's cottage. I told her that I didn't believe I deserved the egg, the Drake that I found out was inside, instead of the Rune I thought it was; I tried giving it to her, but as I did, it glowed, shaking a bit, before Bena told me I was meant to have it. That night, I slept in one of her spare rooms, in my dream I heard a voice telling me, You and I are fated to be together young one, the giver of life has granted me another chance, cheating the Ancient of Death of my soul, for we both have a greater purpose, I woke up the next day, looking at the egg in my arms, knowing inside my heart, that this was where I was supposed to be...
