. The Basics .

. N a m e .

Moki. The first thing I thought of when I saw Moki was one of those chocolate chip oreo mocha shakes from Arby's. But...Chocolate Chip Oreo Mocha Shake is quite the mouthful, am I right? So then I was thinking I could name him Mocha...but it sounds pretty feminine and isn't very original besides. Then, when I was reading Cricket magazine, I found a neat story in which a character was named Moki. I looked up the name, and discovered that it was a lesser known name meaning 'deer'. It was pretty neat, I decided, to have a name that fit him in two ways; it sounded like Mocha, and it meant deer, and he also looks rather deer-like with all the brown and cream.
But what really sealed the deal for me was that Moki just seems to fit him. Perfectly. It has just the right amount of sass and coolness; it just sounds like him. <3

. G e n d e r .

Male. Moki's definitely a boy, in my opinion. His design, with all of it's speckles and stripes and shades of brown, seems mainly masculine to me. <3

. A g e .

Moki is 23 years old. C:

. V o i c e .

Moki 'speaks' in this color.

. S i z e .

Moki is a little smaller than a cow.

. H e i g h t .

Moki is four foot six at the shoulder.

. W e i g h t .

Moki weighs two hundred and forty three pounds.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

. Personality .

. B o l d .

Moki was never one to be careful, cautious, to stay away from the spotlight. He's not afraid of anything (well, except for sharks, but that's different) and he never thinks things through. He's bold and crazy and loves the unexpected. He takes life two steps at a time, jumps in head first. He's really fun to hang out with, because, well, you never know what he's going to do next! Every day's an adventure for Moki, and he loves that.

. F u n n y .

Moki loves making people laugh. He's always trying to be funny, from doing pranks to telling bad knock-knock jokes. But, sometimes, a lot of the time, his 'funny-ness' is at the expense of others; making fun of them behind their backs, imitating them, playing pranks on them...Moki means well, he just doesn't understand the fine line between 'funny' and 'mean'. He's hurt a lot of beans because of this, but he just can't understand, no matter how hard he tries. </3

. P o p u l a r .

Moki is truly quite popular. He's sort of the leader of the group of cool dragons at his school. Nearly everyone looks up to him and asks his opinion on things. He really likes this; it makes him feel special and important. However, I'm sorry to say he is a bit like the stereotypical 'popular kid', if you know what I mean. He can be really mean, when he wants to, and sickly sweet, whichever one benefits him. He never lets 'unpopular kids' into his clique, and they're often the subject of his teasing.

. A r r o g a n t .

Moki has quite the big head...no, not literally! Or well, I guess he kind of does...but I'm getting off track. What I'm trying to say is that Moki is quite the self confident little fella. He thinks he can do just about anything he wants to, because that's just who he is. He's certain he's the coolest JBD in all the world, and nothing you say can change that. His love of himself can get him into a lot of trouble, and he's often teased as the bean version of Narcissus, but he doesn't care; insults bounce off of him like tennis balls off a wall. Nothing can bring down his wall of confidence; well, almost nothing...except sharks. If Moki sees a shark...those walls come crashing down and behind them he's just a scared little bean.

. F l i r t y .

Moki here is quite the flirt. He flirts with tons of girls, flitting between them like a bee between flowers. He often misleads them, causing them to think he truly loves them, then casually breaks their hearts. He knows how irresistible he is, how badly all the girls want him, and he really misuses that. He enjoys making them bend to his will, watching them fall all over him, but he grows bored quickly, and when he's bored with them, he just throws them away, like old toys he's no longer interested in. You'd think this would mean he'd have a bunch of ex-girlfriends out to kill him, but it's quite the opposite; they're all excessively nice to him, hoping he'll change his mind and take them back.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

. Stories .

. L o s t . a t . S e a .

It was dawn; the perfect time for a walk by the beach. Moki yawned, stretched, and leapt out of bed. He was ready to go.
Only a few minutes later, he was walking along the shore, the cool sand pressing up between his toes. He grinned. This was his favorite time to be at the beach, before it was stuffed with tourists. The waves lapped gently against the shore. He leaned down to search for some shells, and soon saw an appropriately lovely one. He dug around a bit then pulled it out. It was pinkish and had a pearly sheen. It was quite beautiful. He smiled deviously, thinking that it would be the perfect sort of thing to give to a girl. He slipped it into his pocket and kept walking.
After a bit of beachcombing, finding nothing prettier than the shell he already had, he walked a little bit off the shore, towards his favorite coffee shop. He stepped inside, and the bell on the door jingled. Rich smells surrounded him. He smiled and walked up to the counter, ordering the same thing he did every day; a mango-peach milkshake. Who knew why they’d have one at a coffee shop? He didn’t care; it tasted so good.
He paid the cashier and took his milkshake to one of the back tables in the shop and began slurping loudly. Soon he heard a light giggling noise. He looked over and, two girl dragons had entered the shop! He grinned, leaving his shake at his table and sauntering over to them.
“Hello, ladies,” he said, winking and giving his most charismatic grin.
They blushed and giggled. He came closer to the prettier one, slim with shiny red-pink fur.
“You’re beautiful,” he breathed, smiling lightly. Then he pulled out the shimmering shell and pressed it into her palm.
She blushed even deeper, then smiled broadly. But before she could say a thing...Moki was gone. She stared at the spot he had been, wondering if she would ever meet the lovely, mysterious gentleman again.

At the shore once again, Moki was doubled over with laughter. Girls were so easy!
He continued walking along the beach, getting closer and closer to his little boat, Amour. He smiled; he couldn’t wait to ride around in his boat. He considered the idea of taking the pink dragon for a ride, but decided against it.

Fairly soon, Moki was at the Amour. He climbed in, picked up a paddle, untied it from the dock, and set off! The waves were small and peaceful, and he was slicing through the ocean in no time. All in all, his day was getting off to a wonderful start.

Then he saw it. It? A storm, then. A huge storm, off in the distance, but getting closer. It was a dark mass over the water. Even bold, carefree Moki knew he wouldn’t want to be caught in it. Frantically, he turned the boat around and started paddling for shore. He kept looking back, though...the storm was getting closer and closer. It was a dark mass that looked like a giant, roiling cloud of death. He paddled faster, faster, faster! His muscles were aching, but every time he started slowing down, he looked at the storm approaching and paddled even faster.

Finally, finally, his paddle hit sand and he leapt out of the boat, tugging it onto shore.

Phew! He thought, wiping sweat off his forehead. Safe at last.

But the storm kept coming closer...

He realized, startled, that it wasn't going to stop at the shore. He stood, frozen with fear like a deer in headlights, as the huge, swirling cloud enveloped him...
Then everything went black.

-wip story, I'm really sorry if I don't manage to finish it! >.<-

. Moki and Me .

I love Moki. <3
I wish I could just look you in the eye, and tell you that, and you would be able to see how much I love him.
Sadly, this is a computer not a person, so I'll have to try to explain...

I love every little piece of him.
His design is absolutely brilliant. Some people say he's too complex for them.
I'm not scared of a complicated design; I love it's intricacy, it's beauty.
The little stripes and spots and brindles all come together oh-so-perfectly.

I love his colors, too. The browns and tans go perfectly with the black, which grounds the whole design.

My favorite part of his design, though, has to be the eyes.
They're just so...different. The orange is so bright and fun, and as soon as I saw that pink stripe...I knew I was a goner. I'd fallen in love, head over heels, for this charming little guy.

His personality, too, is loads of fun to work with. I love the idea of this clever, spunky, arrogant little charmer. He'd be fantastic fun to play with as my first JBD.

But...I don't want him because he's a JBD. I'm not interested in him just because JBDs are popular right now. I just love him for who he is; I don't care what his species is, he's absolutely perfect. <33

Untouched by many,
Known by almost none
Lies a land, an enigma,
A challenge to the eyes of one

And in that tangle
Of wild forest trees
Travels a wandering soul
Admiring the dancing breeze

He comes without guidence,
Yet lonely he is not
For intent he is
On this land, so sought

Enticed by weeping willows,
Singing bluebirds, morning frost
Such a grand specter,
Makes one forget he is lost

Kettlecorn ♂

It's All in the Name

Kettle Corn : popcorn that is sweetened with sugar during cooking.

Name Origin: At first glance, Ket gives quite an impression of his namesake. With his bright, fiery eyes and caramel colored swirls, it's not a surprise that he's often compared to the sweet carnival treat. Despite this, he is far from sweet, and doesn't appreciate when others judge him at first glance. He prefers just being called, "Ket" or "Kettle", and the pet name "Corny" dives him up a wall.

The Basics
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
Age: 27
Height: Roughly seven feet from tail tip to nose, the size of a large Great Dane.
Weight: Slightly underweight, but fairly healthy.
Eye Color: Amber
Birthdate: September 9th, 1985
Residence: Ket's a travler, he prefers to always be on the move.
Health: Very well, though he is allergic to certain types of pollen.
Relations?: None, he has yet to find a love interest.
Eating Habits: Ket tends to skip a few meals, due to the fact that he's a traveler, but when he does eat, it's usually healthy. He has a bad habit of snacking, and loves trail mix.
Accessories: Ket wears a silver nose piercing on his muzzle and a sleek metal bracelet which he is never without. On trips, he brings along a useful leather messenger bag to store his travel supplies.
Occupation: Ket doesn't have an actual occupation at the moment, but he does enjoy exploring. It's his lifelong dream to become a well-known mapmaker and to adventure to new places.

Preferences:

Likes:
~ Exploring. This is his favorite pastime and core talent. From mapping out journeys to taking place in a wild venture to the unknown, Ket lives for it all. Ever sense he was a small Jellybean Dragon, he has been fascinated by the world and is constantly chasing after his goal to travel the world.

~ Climbing, an essential tool for an explorer as devoted as Kettlecorn. Ket loves scaling up trees to take in the view or clambering up a rocky outcrop to see what may be hidden in the tunnels. Thanks to his sharp claws, this is an easy task for him, and climbing is a very relaxing pastime for him.

~ Sunsets, sunrises, anything that colors the sky captures Kettle's interest. The red colored skies and puffy clouds make for an incredible view, and there is nothing more relaxing then staring into the heart of an evening sunset.

~ His leather messenger bag, which contains enough pockets to store his belongings. He's always well prepared and organized. Not to mention, the bag looks quite impressive!

~ Maple, which is Ket's favorite flavor. The sticky syrup always tempts him, and it is by far his favorite treat.

~ Trail mix. This useful combination of nuts and fruits keep Ket's appetite satisfied on his long travels. It is also conveniently sized, so it doesn't weigh much in his messenger bag.

~ Gemstones simply fascinate Ket, and the Jellybean Dragon can think of no better reward for a long trek then to find a beautiful gemstone hidden among the rocks. He's started a collection of stones, and occasionally uses his metalworking talents to craft and sell jewelry for other Jellybean Dragons in the area as a hobby.

Dislikes:

~ Enclosed spaces. Ket can't help it; being shut up in a confined area instantly makes him uncomfortable. The feeling of being trapped has constantly haunted his nightmares, and he hopes that this will never happen in his waking world.

~ Sugary foods. While a bit of sugar makes for a nice treat, too much bothers him, and he dislikes overly sweet foods.

~ Others. Ket is a bit antisocial, and he would much rather be alone then in a large group of other JBDs. He gets distracted easily, and has a bit of trouble keeping up a long conversation.

~ Snow and ice, as it makes his travels difficult. Most of the time Kettlecorn adventures during summer or fall, and winter makes it difficult to go far or explore.

~ Flowers, as they contain pollen, which Ket is allergic to. He doesn't mind looking at them from afar, though, and does admire their colors.

Personality:
(Quotes found on BrainyQuote.com)

Positive Traits:

Bravery:
"Bravery is the capacity to perform properly even when scared half to death."
- Omar N. Bradley

When needed the most, nothing will get in Kettlecorn's way. Always ready to swallow his fears and face the facts, Ket certainly has gut. This is his main character trait, and a lot of Kettlecorn's peers see him as almost indestructible, though this is not the truth. There is nothing that separates Ket from the other JBDs except that Ket will never stand to fail himself.

Devoted:
"Whatever I have tried to do in life, I have tried with all my heart to do it well; whatever I have devoted myself to, I have devoted myself completely; in great aims and in small I have always thoroughly been in earnest."
- Charles Dickens

If Ket's heart is set on something, he will sacrifice all of his energy and skill into completing that task, no matter how taxing it may be. Whether it's mapping out a new territory or protecting his friends from danger, Ket will always pull through when it is needed most.

Just:
"I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against."
- Malcom X

Kettlecorn hates dishonesty, and always is in support of fairness. The quote above sums up Kettlecorn's viewpoints very well, and Ket lives by this code each day.

Polite:
"Be polite to all, but intimate with few."
- Thomas Jefferson

While Ket is far from a social character, he always tries to be polite and nice around others. He simply doesn't find the point of being rude or sharp around strangers, as it will only cause him to come off as aggressive.

Negative Traits:

Emotional:
"I can be very reserved about things. My business side isn't shy. I can be like a general. But I've got a shy side. I'm also a lot deeper than people think, and a lot more sensitive. But I don't let people in too much."
- Michael Bay

Ket is a bit off an odd character, brave and confident one moment and yet reserved and uncomfortable the next. He tends to take critique a little to closely to heart, and regrets always seem to weigh him down. He has difficulty forgiving himself or others, and can become emotional over certain topics.

Untrusting:
"Learning to trust is one of life's most difficult tasks."
- Isaac Watts

Kettlecorn is one of the loyalest friends you could ask for, and therefore, when that loyalty isn't returned, it can result in Ket showing his ugly side. He isn't quick to trust others, and prefers to take tasks into his own paws. Others turning against him can result in bitterness and distrust, and Ket struggles to have confidence in his friends.

Anti-Social:
"Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty."
- Mother Teresa

Ket doesn't have the motivation in him to attend social events or go out and make a lot of friends, and therefore is generally alone. He feels unwelcome and uncomfortable in a large group, and he usually secludes himself from such events. The sad thing is that Ket isn't aware of how a good group of friends could help him and make his life more enjoyable, and so Kettlecorn still has yet to discover this.

Insecure:
"I'm not the guy who bursts into the room. I'm the most insecure person you'll meet if you get to know me."
- John Stamos

Ket doesn't have much of an ego. He finds it challenging to see the good points in himself, and always seems to wallow in his faults and mistakes. He feels guilty all the time, and will hopefully soon find a way to overcome his low self-esteem.

History & Short Stories
"Oh, you want to see my journal? Well... I usually don't go flaunting this around, but I suppose you reading an entry or two wouldn't hurt. I enjoy writing in my free time, so I've documented all of my adventures for you. Unfortunately, I have a bad habit writing my novels in different notebooks, so all of my stories are scattered about the place. Well, here's one for you. It was my first real exploration that took place when I was only a young JBD. While you read that, I'll see if I can find some more entries..." - Ket

"The Quartz Treasure"
Image

Fire. Everywhere.

The crisp orange flames lapped at the scenery around it, demolishing trees and drenching dandelions in a wave of heat. Wisps of smoke weaved through the treetops in a similar fashion to that of a wavering ghost.

Alone in this fire was Kettlecorn. The young Jellybean Dragon watched the inferno with awe, horror dancing in his eyes. His throat was thick with fear, and still he managed to cough out a weak, "Help!", yet it was of no use. The flames circled around him, nearing closer and closer with each fiery movement.

There wasn't much time. Kettlecorn watched in horror as the flames seized him, first snaking to ignite the tip of his tail and then snapping at his small paws. Kettlecorn leapt back in horror, but it was too late, the blaze had already crept onto his pelt, searing into his flesh and smarting like crazy...

Kettlecorn took a huge gulp of air, and through the flames shrieked,

"HELP!"

Ket woke with a start. The environment around him was a mystifying quiet, vastly different from his nighttime terror. He laid in his nest for a moment, trying to grasp reality again.

"Erm... you okay Ket?"

Kettlecorn twisted to see where this voice had come from. A slender pink and blue dragon was staring back at him, uncertainty flickering in her eyes.

"Oh, hey Circuit," Ket replied, shaking the dread from his dream off as if it were nothing but a leaf caught in his pelt. "What's up?" the young dragon wavered his tail with excitement, curiosity beaming in his golden eyes.

"All of the Dragons in our Jam are going to meet up this afternoon," Circuit replied, her usual bubbly attitude glinting in her gentle blue eyes. "One of the adults found a new cave, and he's gonna let all of the young Jellybean Dragons explore it! It'll be like a scavenger hunt, it's going to be really fun!"

"Scavenger hunt?" Ket questioned, his head turning at the unfamiliar concept.

"Don't worry, you'll love it, it's really fun!" Circuit chimed. "Come on, Ket! We're going to be late!"

"But you said it wasn't until this afterno–"

"Well we have to eat breakfast first and walk there, don't we?" Circuit smirked, giving Ket a playful bat on his shoulder. "C'mon, lazy!"

The two Jellybean Dragons spent the remainder of the morning chowing down ripe fruits and lounging around in the early autumn warmth. At last, the sun rose to the peak of the sky and shone down on Circuit and Ket, as if announcing that noon had come. And just when they thought the anticipation would never end, a sleek blue Bean came to join them.

"Everyone!" the young Jellybean Dragon, a little girl known as Slipstream, announced. "We're meeting by the cavern now! Everyone'll be there, the Jam elder is sorting out scavenger hunt groups for all the other Beans!"

At that moment, Slipstream, Circuit, and Kettlecorn all scampered over to the caverns, Circuit occasionally stumbling from how excited she was to participate in such a fun social event. "Oh, I hope we aren't late!" Slipstream confessed to Ket as they zipped through the wood. "I got sidetracked a bit on the way to see you..."

"Sidetracked?" Kettlecorn questioned, but Slipstream just blushed and turned her muzzle away, leaving a sense of suspicion in Kettlecorn.

They didn't speak for the rest of the run, and soon enough the trio had reached the gathering of other JBDs. A sense of forbidding swept over Ket as he realized the group was much larger then he intended. Dozens of Jellybean Dragons were scattered along the cavern outskirts, each chattering excitedly in their own cliques. Kettlecorn watched them with interest, yet at the same time, he had an odd prick of unwelcoming at the large group. Luckily, he wasn't the only JBD feeling this way. A black and white skeleton marked male was lingering at the back of the group, obviously regretting attending the hunt.

"Oh, we are late!" Slipstream groaned, and once again her cheek reddened. She opened her mouth as if to apologize, but then shut it awkwardly.

She's definitely keeping something from us... Kettlecorn recognized, a stab of anger flitting through him.

"Oh, Circuit!" among the large group emerged a cheerful female JBD with gorgeous green fur with garnet red markings. Kettlecorn smiled a bit, she was kinda pretty.

"January!" Circuit chirped, dashing over to her friend. "It's so nice to see you again!"

"We're in the same group!" January chimed, her expression beaming. "I was so worried that I wouldn't be in a group with any of my friends–"

"Any of your friends? Jan, you have tons!"

The girls broke into giggling, and Kettlecorn felt awkward as he intervened, "Uhh... yeah, that's great. So, January, what group am I in?"

January's giggling broke off sharply, and Ket worried for a moment that he had offended her, but then she just smiled and replied, "No problem. Umm, what's your name?"

"Kettlecorn."

"Oh, okay! Yeah, I think I remember your name from roll-call, you're in Ituri's group."

"Just Ituri?"

"Umm..." January narrowed her eyes in thought. "Oh yeah!" she said with a jump in her voice that startled Ket. "Slipstream's in it too. And Keiran," she motioned to the lone JBD.

While he was disappointed that he wasn't in January's group, Kettlecorn was glad he was in Slipstream's. At least now he could question her about all her weird behavior and see what she was up to.

"Listen here, Beans!" the Jam elder, a wise looking dragon, announced. "It's time to get in your groups and start the scavenger hunt!" The Jellybean Dragon children fell into silence and gave their earnest attention to the elder. "For your scavenger hunt, you'll need to find," he cleared his throat and began to recite a cliché and somewhat cheesy poem;

"To find what you seek
Look into the cave, reach the peak
Find the stone that controls each hour,
And a fruit that is sweet, not sour!
Thirdly is a tropical bird's feather,
And last is a strip of leather
Find these items, quick and fast
Or else you'll find you've come in last!
"

"Does he really have to make it all rhyme like that?" a snarky JBD snickered from the back of the groups. "It sounds so corny!" His friends broke into laughter around him, and a few other Beans joined in. Circuit gave a little scoff, though Slipstream looked slightly offended, it appeared that she had liked the poem.

Seemingly oblivious to the children's snide remarks, the elder continued, "Alright, into the cave, young ones! Stay safe, and good luck!"

It was as if someone had fired off a shotgun. All of the Beans erupted into a crazed frenzy, and for a horrified moment Ket was lost in the crowd. "Ituri! Keiran!" he cried over the sea of dragons. "Over here!"

Keiran gave a dumbstruck look from behind a group of racing Jellybean Dragons, much like a deer in the headlights. Kettlecorn still had not found any sign of Ituri, but soon Slipstream came over with Ituri tailing her.

"Alright guys, let's go, we're already behind!"

The four Jellybean Dragons zipped off ahead, Slipstream taking the lead, Ituri and Kettlecorn occupying the middle, their paw steps equally paced, and Keiran, hesitant, keeping up at the end of the group. The cave was gloomy and dark, and the only sounds were the echoes of excited Jellybean Dragons and the occasional flutter of a bat's wing. Kettlecorn was so intrigued by the patterns formed along the gray walls that he nearly crashed into Slipstream as she came to a halt.

"And a fruit, sweet not sour," she recited. "Look, there's a bush there!" Through a crevice, a small bush was growing, wilting in the dim sunlight that shone through a break in the cave.

"I've got it," Keiran replied, swiftly sliding through the break. He eyed the bush, and returned back with nothing in his possession.

"Umm, aren't you going to get the fruit?" Ituri asked, looking awkwardly at Keiran.

"It's not there," Keiran said, uncomfortably looking away from Ituri's gaze. "It said a fruit that was sweet, I'm pretty sure that was a citrus fruit."

"Are you sure?"

"I-I..." Keiran blushed, not wanting to continue this conversation.

But Ituri only nodded and replied, "Alright, I believe you. Where should we search next?"

"How about over there?" Ket interrupted, nodding to a tunnel opposite to the crevice. The others nodded, (though oddly, Slipstream gave a guilty look back at the crevice), and they scaled down the tunnel only to come face to face with another crevice. Without instruction, Keiran used his lithe body to squeeze through the opening.

"Did you find the fruit?" Ituri called.

"Nope," Keiran said, and when Slipstream gave a disappointed sigh, he quickly added, "Oh, but I found the leather!"

With a quarter of their journey complete, the foursome felt more confidence as they strode through the cavern. The tropical bird's feather was painfully easy to find, as the vivid feathers stood out like a beacon against the gray stone.

"Let's take this feather!" Ituri smiled, selecting a bright orange plume from the pile of feathers. "It's bright like a flame!"

At the word "flame", Kettlecorn quivered. He had only then been reminded of his dream.

Slipstream took the quill from Ituri and fashioned it into her fur like some exotic headpiece. "Don't I look stunning?" she replied, which caused Ituri to give a short laugh and Kettlecorn to roll his eyes in annoyance.

"Really, Slip," Ket teased. "If you think some ugly little feather in your fur makes you so–"

"They're coming!" Keiran gasped, and before the other three could react, they were slammed into the crevice, all smushed awkwardly on top of each other.

"Hey," Kettlecorn hissed. "What was that for I–"

Keiran smacked his tail over Kettlecorn's mouth, and only then did he hear the voices.

"Wow Jan, I've gotta leave it to you, you were right!" an echo of Circuit's voice danced down the hallway. She, January, and Fizz were laughing and chattering so loud, it was no wonder how Keiran had heard them from so far away.

"Well, I'm always right," January replied in fake vanity that caused Fizz to give her a playful bop on the head. "After all, who else would've realized that the mangoes were hidden by that old bridge?"

The sweet fruit is by a bridge? Kettlecorn's ears quavered at this useful piece of information.

"I know, I expected it to be in a crevice like all the other items!" Circuit commented.

"Yeah, it's weird," Fizz said in a less bubbly voice. "After all, didn't they say that old bridge was off limits? If you were to fall in that old gully you'd never see the light of day again!"

"Oh, stop being overdramatic, Fizzpop!" January rolled her eyes. "After all, you didn't have to actually cross the bridge to get the fruit, it's just beside it."

"True..."

"Okay, we still need to find that quartz..." Flashlight, the fourth member of the group, announced with a sigh that implied that he wasn't so fond of working with such a gossipy group of girls. "It's probably this way..."

"Oh my gosh, we could win this!" Fizz cheered, pretty much ignoring Flashlight. "I wonder what we'll win!"

"Maybe a treat!"

"Or a vacation!"

There voices bounced excitedly down the cavern until they were out of earshot. With the coast clear, Keiran squeezed out of the crevice and the others kicked out of the small area, Kettlecorn extremely unnerved from being in such a confinement.

"Well, I suppose you all know where we're heading next," said Slipstream, the feather wavering like a flag in her tail, "To the bridge!"

They spent a few minutes scouting through the caves in search of the bridge, but Keiran soon let them down the right path, blushing as Ituri and Ket thanked him. Soon they had arrived at a large underground clearing with stalactites that hung like stone icicles and a slick stone floor that looked almost polished. The air was thick, yet pure, and Kettlecorn breathed it in, enjoying it's taste. Farther along the clearing was a huge drop off that shot down fifteen, maybe thirty feet underground. A rickety old bridge connected the stone floor to the parallel side, and Kettlecorn looked across it uncomfortably.

"Found the fruit!" Ituri chimed, choosing a ripened mango from the pile of fruit. "Now we just need the quartz–"

"No, we're all done."

Slipstream's reply left a hanging sense of confusion in the air, and the slick blue JBD blushed, not facing any of her partners.

At this moment, Kettlecorn's patience snapped. "I knew it!" he spat, rounding on Slipstream. "You are keeping something from us! Spit it out!"

Slipstream looked as if she was on the verge of tears, but then choked out, "Fine, okay, Kettlecorn! It's my fault, I did it!"

"Did what?" Ituri blinked, totally lost.

At that moment Slipstream unfurled her paw, and set down the glimmering quartz stones that she had been secretly keeping in your possession.

Kettlecorn looked at her in horror, disgust shimmering in his eyes, "Slipstream, you cheated?! "

"I-, I didn't mean to!" the young Slipstream begged, a few guilty tears gleaming in her turquoise eyes. "I came across the crystal on my way to find you and Circuit, I didn't know it was one of the scavenger hunt items, honest! We came late to the meeting so by the time I found out, it was too late!"

"And you kept this from us the entire time?" Kettlecorn scowled, hurt by Slipstream's betrayal. "How could you? Now we'll never win, no one will win!"

"Hey, knock it off, Kettlecorn!" Ituri intervened. "Slipstream feels guilty enough, you're making it worse!"

"Well it is her fault! She's the one that caused this, going and stealing minerals from caves in the first place!" Kettlecorn snapped, growing furious at Ituri.

"Still, that was her mistake and it's none of your concern." Ituri chided, fixing Ket with a hard look. "You have no right to go and yell at her!"

"Stop being such a know-it-all!"

"Once you stop being such a bully!"

Keiran's face flushed, and not wanting to hear anymore fighting, he slowly backed off, wanting to leave immediately. As he backed out of the clearing, he bumped into another group of hunters.

"Well well," the snarky JBD that had disrespected the Jam elder smiled. "What's this? Seems you guys got the treasure before us?"

Keiran stared blankly at him, lost for words.

The JBD whispered mischievously to his teammates, and they all gave devilish grins and laughs. The leader of the group strolled past the horror-struck Keiran, and prowled over to the group where Slipstream's quartz stone lay helplessly on the ground. He picked it up with a smirk, and used his tail to hurl it over to the other side of the bridge. "Whoops," he said in false guilt. "Did I do that?"

Ituri's and Kettlecorn's bickering broke off at once, and they turned to face him, their fighting ceasing at once. "Hey, what the heck was that for?" snarled Ket.

The JBD gave a malicious smile, "Oh, you know, just making things fair."

"Fair?" Kettlecorn spat, his anger channeling from Ituri to this arrogant Bean. "Now no one will get it! No Jellybean Dragon in their right mind could cross that bridge!"

"You would think so, coward."

His gang gave a low "Ohhh," and Kettlecorn's cheeks reddened in rage. "Shut up!"

"Oh, don't let him get to you, Ket." Ituri sighed.

"What's going on here?" at that moment, Fizz, Circuit, Flashlight, and January burst into the room. "Why is everyone gathered like this?"

"Ket's too scared to get the quartz stone."

January turned oddly to Ket, and at her gaze his fury bubbled over. "Am not! You know what, I'll get it right now!"

Silence blanketed the Jellybean Dragons, and Kettlecorn stepped forward and looked across the gap. The bridge wasn't very long, but it was in horrible condition, and at the first step Ket could feel a sickening creak. Swallowing the uncertainty that had knotted in his throat, he proceeded along the bridge.

Carefully.

Carefully.

Every step held a risk, and Ket felt his breath clawing at his lungs. Don't look down, don't stop just keep moving, Ket. That's good... just like that–

And then Fizz shrieked.

Before Kettlecorn had even realized what had happened, the wooden bridge fell under his weight. He grasped the wood, clinging on for his life. The bridge swayed back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.

Ket felt like he'd be sick.

"Hang on, Ket!" Ituri gasped. "I'm getting help!" he and Circuit zoomed out of the tunnel, adrenaline quickening their pace. At once, the arrogant JBD who had caused this mess and Keiran scrambled over the cliff, both bravely heading over to save Kettlecorn. Flashlight was dangling his glow stick necklace above the pair so that they could see in the dusky crevice. Slipstream was sobbing, guilt paining her for causing this mess, and January just stood in a numb silence, paralyzed from the recent events.

Kettlecorn, still hanging from the bridge, felt his strength return to his legs, and began to scale up the bridge. He managed to close his jaws around the quartz, and spat it down into the gully where Keiran quickly grasped it.

"Okay, I've got the stupid rock," he breathed, "Now get me down!"

Keiran set the rock on a ragged ledge, and he and his partner snapped up each of the ropes in their jaws and hauled it towards the top of the gully where Flashlight and January helped pull it up.

With a huge sigh of relief, Kettlecorn scrambled across the bridge. Slipstream toppled over to him, tears in her eyes.

"Oh Ket! I'm so so sorry! This is all–"

"Hey, it's fine!" Kettlecorn blushed. "Actually, it was pretty fun! My heart was racing like crazy, let's do it again!"

January rolled her eyes, and Flashlight gave a small sigh.

"Not bad," the cocky JBD said, shaking dust off his pelt. "But you're still a coward."

Kettlecorn ignored him, and turned to the tunnel. "Hey, Circuit and Ituri are back!"

The two young Beans and some older adults had dashed into the cave.

"Oh, Kettlecorn! I was terrified!" Circuit cried.

"You scared the heck out of me!"

"I'm fine guys... everyone, I'm fine!" Kettlecorn insisted as his Jam circled around him. "I'm not hurt at all!"

"Well, well," the elder said in an annoying I-know-everything tone. "It seems we have some very brave and wise young Beans in this generation. I say you all deserve a prize, so, let's have a feast!"

"This old loon throws a feast for my nephew practically dying..." an adult Jellybean Dragon whispered irritably to his mate.

Seeing that Kettlecorn was not injured, the JBDs began to depart, a few motherly adults double-checking Kettlecorn to make sure he was managing alright. Kettlecorn followed the group, happiness dancing around him.

This was my first time in this cave, but it's definitely not my last.

An Interview with Kettlecorn
(Source)

Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
A: "Whew... that'd be a tough one for me. I don't really think I did much that you'd consider important... but perhaps mapping the Frosted Glade? It's a small region northeast of here that hadn't been discovered until I came across it when I was foolish (but daring?) enough to trap myself in an icy cavern two winters ago, and it turns out that my escape lead straight to the Glade! Not only is it a new, beautiful landscape, but the flowers and herbs that grow in its fields are also very useful for medicines. I also won a little art contest in my Jam when my friend Slipstream convinced me to submit a painting I did of some far-off mountains... I never expected to win that!"

Q: What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A: "Perfect happiness? Well, I hate to sound like a total pessimist here but I doubt that will ever happen... though, if I had the ability to change things, my idea for perfect happiness would be for the world to coexist... and definitely more fairness and justice! As for me personally, I'm content with lounging in my trees listening to the birdsong."

Q: What is your current state of mind?
A: "As in, my current mood? Well, I'm a little weirded out as to why you're asking me all these questions... but really, I'm in a pretty neutral state."

Q: What is your favorite occupation?
A: Exploring exploring exploring. It is my number one passion, skill, and hobby and I live for it. Ever sense my first adventure to rescue Slipstream's quartz stone, I've never gotten enough of traveling. New, unknown region? I'm there."

Q: What is your most treasured possession?
A: "Haha. I usually end up losing my valuable items since I'm always on the move, so I've never really had something long enough to really treasure it. I'm also not exactly what you'd call organized, so I loose track of my possessions often. If I had to pick some of my most memorable items, it would be my metal bracelet and nose ring, my art and maps, and my travel journal. My most useful objects are my leather massager bag, notebook, and snacks."

Q: What or who is the greatest love of your life?
A: "Oh, umm.... I don't really have a significant other at the moment. Yes, I've had crushes now and then but there's no one really important to me right now, or at least, it's not like anyone likes me back... this is a bit of an uncomfortable topic for me, can we please move on?"

Q: What is your favorite journey?
A: "I swear this question has my name on it. I can't even begin to choose a favorite journey of mine, there were all so fascinating and exciting! I've written about a majority of them in my journal, so check that out if you're interested!"

Q: What is your most marked characteristic?
A: "I don't usually think about this... but it'd probably be my bravery. I don't like to let anything get in my way, and I always try to push away my fears and go out and push myself anyways. After all, what fun is life if you never dare to participate in it?"

Q: When and where were you the happiest?
A: "I'm always happy after an exploration, especially a successful one. Knowing that I've been somewhere before any other JBD gives me a feel of importance, and it's always good to know I've contributed to the JBD community."

Q: What is it that you most dislike?
A: "Vanity. Others rambling about how great they think they are bothers me to no end..."

Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: "Enclosed spaces. I had a bit of claustrophobia when I was young, and it just worsened over the years. It's gotten to the point where even being in a human house or den makes me sick, and I find myself searching for fresh air right away. Oddly, my phobia doesn't seem to include caves, as I'm perfectly okay with being stuck in a cavern for days without freaking out. Perhaps the thrill of adventure veils my discomfort?"

Q: Which living person do you most despise?
A: "There was this one Jellybean Dragon who took a liking to harassing me all of my childhood years... yeah, not fun. I guess it was partially my fault though, he did have pretty good points to dislike me... Anyways, I'm really antisocial so I don't really get the chance to hate – or like – anyone."

Q: What is your greatest regret?
A: "There's a lot I regret, actually. For one, I should've been more confident as an adolescent, as I was so insecure I spent most of my days alone and now I find myself constantly getting lonely. Also, I should've been more discreet with my exploring as I cluelessly ended up messing things up, such as accidentally trailing a poisonous dust back to the Jam or causing overly curious Beans to follow me. I should've cared more about my health, as now I find myself getting sick often. Yeah, the list just goes on..."

Q: Which talent would you most like to have?
A: "Swimming. Being a good swimmer would allow me to explore new areas, not to mention it could be of use if I ever needed to escape from danger by water."

Q: Where would you like to live?
A: "I don't want to 'live' anywhere. I love being on the go, and staying in on place for too long would drive me nuts."

Q: What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
A: "Loneliness. There's nothing worse then feeling all alone in life, like there's no one for you..."

Q: What is the quality you most like in a woman?
A: "Openness. I'd like her to be trusting and open with me, and not to hide her true emotions or opinions. Looks are overrated, it's traits like kindness and devotion that keeps a couple together."

Q: What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
A: "My lack of self-confidence. I just can't look at myself and feel proud, I always end up picking out my faults..."

Q: What is the trait you most deplore in others?
A: "Deception. I hate it when others twist and turn the truth for their own benefit I just find it... sickening."

Q: What do you most value in your friends?
A: "Their loyalty, and more importantly, their respect when I explain to them that I'd like to spend time alone."

Q: Which living person do you most admire?
A: "Honestly, I don't admire anyone. Everyone has their flaws and benefits, so I can't really find myself looking up to others."

Q: What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
A: "Wisdom. So what if some are smarter or more experienced then others? You learn overtime, at your own pace, and wisdom is something found in all, not granted to few."

Q: On what occasions do you lie?
A: "I'm pretty honest, but I will lie if I need to protect an important friend, loved one, or secret. I would drop the occasional white lies when I was young, like 'No, I'm not going out alone tonight.' or 'Yeah, I did go to sleep early.'

Q: Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
A: "'Well, I haven't died yet.' I find myself saying this a lot when someone voices their concerns for my wild adventures."

Q: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
A: "I'd make myself more confident, kinder, less temperamental, and maybe... okay, don't tell anyone, but maybe a bit more romantic. I find myself struggling to impress crushes, and I wish I knew what to say to let them know I love them."

Q: How would you like to die?
A: "Peacefully and quietly, surrounded by my love and knowing I left a mark on the world."

Q: If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be?
A: "I'd be a bird. I'd be able to explore so many new places and travel so much faster... it'd be great."

Q: What is your motto?
A: "Live life to its fullest."

And yet, he still wanders
Fascinated by the display
Night blanketing over,
Leaves no trace of dismay

Morning shall commence,
But for now the explorer awaits
The grand explorations to come
Surely they are his fates

And as the moonlight dapples his fur,
So rests Kettlecorn
Tomorrow holds another pleasure,
In a land so forlorn
