Re: DAM: Steel Grey Roan (buckskin base) Leopard

Owner:
Ashwyn

DAM's name:
Aminita
(Inspired by the Aminita species of poisonous mushrooms XD)

Gender:
Mare

Height:
14.3 hh

Rarity:
Very Rare

Story:
The whole thing was quite the sordid affair. This was the prominent thought that flashed through Aminita's eyes as she beheld the eye dazzling display before her, colourful silks of all imaginable colour seemed to flutter gracefully in the wind like the unnatural tails of many horses, and even the tents seemed to sparkle with a mystical light, changing the desert from a barren wasteland to a place of enchanting beauty and brilliant colours. Of course, she had never seen a desert gypsy caravan before, let alone a gathering of them like this. Tossing her silken mane the mare narrowed her expressive blue eyes slightly, she hadn't the foggiest idea what these humans intended to do now, but she had a flash of intuition that nothing good would come of this, there was a bad feeling in the air. Shaking her head slightly Aminita turned away, her pace languid and easy, though there was a trace of unease in her eyes that flickered there nervously for anyone to see.

Several days passed and unwittingly Aminita found herself on the same hillock looking down at the caravan. She could sense the rain was coming, and she feared for the seemingly peaceful two-leg herd down below. True, she -like all members of the desert appaloosa mustang species- were shy of humans and abhorred being near them, but Aminita valued all life, and the thought of what a flash flood could do made her stomach turn rather violently. Flash floods didn't happen often since there was generally very little rain in the desert, but when a rainstorm did run through it was almost guaranteed that low lying areas, and valleys with hills on all sides, would experience a flash flood.

Pawing the ground anxiously with her hoof she wondered what could be done about it, alerting them through some form of theatrics displayed before all of them wasn't her style, but what else could she do? Frowning Aminita looked away from the rather large and imposing herd of two-legs to look up at the rocky slopes that loomed on all sides of their strange dwelling places. This place was a death trap, and if they all remained here when the rain hit...they would almost certainly all die.

~~~~
It was a simple truth that the desert is not the endless barren wasteland it seems, beauty can be found anywhere, and this place was no exception. It wasn't flat and empty, but riddled with hills, varied terrain, and rare but alluring fauna. It also was subject to brutal extremes in weather, such as the swiftly approaching rain which would cause a flash flood, and as a result of this unpredictable and yet intriguing nature, it was safe to say that such a climate and landscape could not be found anywhere else on the planet. Of course at that moment Aminita was far too occupied with trying to decide what to do to help, and was certainly not thinking of the beautiful land around her, as she looked down on the innocent lives that would soon be claimed unless something could be done. For the young man who sat on the hill however, watching with awe and respect the stunning desert mare, he had found himself pondering all these things earlier in the day as the brilliant sun rose into the sky.
Currently though the boy was both perplexed and somewhat worried by the signs of anxiety the mare was showing, it was putting him on edge, for he had always been taught to respect, listen to, and almost revere the desert mustangs. Besides, seeing a long maned one was....unusual to say the least. Thoughtfully he found himself wondering if this meant there would be rain, it was said that any time you saw a long maned DAM rain would come. At that moment though, the mare looked up abruptly and caught sight of him. For a moment the two stood frozen, simply staring uncertainly at each other, but slowly the mare tossed her mane and started to walk hesitantly towards him.
~~~~

It went against everything her nature told her to do, even now she felt the first sting of panic nipping at her heels, but the human colt seemed tame enough, and she was quicker than the wind when she needed to be, so Aminita forced herself to continue walking until she was directly in front of the male. He seemed to be holding his breath, and though she wrinkled her dainty nose at the stink of him, she lowered her head so that she could look into his eyes and willed him to focus. Deliberately she slowly lifted her head and stamped a hoof, tossing her head in the direction of the sky and then nodding towards the herd of humans. Wanting to see if he had understood her warning she swiveled her head to look at him again. The two-legged colt seemed confused, his head tilted oddly and his brow scrunched. Letting out a frustrated snort she stamped her hoof harder and tried again, indicating the sky and then nodding towards the human herd before fixing her gaze on the two-legged colt. For a few beats he only blinked, but slowly his eyes widened as understanding dawned, and he looked at the hills surrounding the camp and then down to the many colourful tents with horror.

Feeling that her work was done Aminita let out a contented breath and whirled, racing off into the desert where she belonged, her tail flying like a proud banner behind her. She was already a bundle of nerves from getting so close to the two-legged colt, and was only too pleased at her ability to run off into the desert without a flicker of guilt in her mind. She could only hope that the human colt would be reliable and manage to alert the others to danger, more than this she could not do, for Aminita knew that for her own safety she must find higher ground now herself.

~~~~
The boy couldn't believe that the scout whom had been instructed to find a safe place to set up the caravan hadn't caught the danger, staying in a valley generally wasn't dangerous here in the bone-dry desert admittedly, but regardless they all should have known better. Pressing a palm to his forehead and letting out a soft groan, he wondered how on earth he was going to convince everyone to move up to the top of the hills. It certainly wouldn't be easy but it had to be done. The white mare had spoken, and he chose to believe that it meant rain was coming, though why the mare would choose to save them...he couldn't fathom but wouldn't complain.
~~~~

True to form the flash flood wreathed through the desert the next night, and yet when she came to see if the humans had heeded her warning, she found that they had moved to higher ground and were drenched but alive. Feeling pleased with herself Aminita turned to leave, only spotting the boy -who was sitting in the same spot as last time- at the last possible moment, and watching with interest as he bowed at the waist to her in his gratitude. Letting her gaze linger on him for a moment, she finally turned and ran off into the desert again like a pale ghost, leaving the boy to eventually wonder if it had all been but a lucky dream.

Owner: Kat.
DAM's name: Kayahna ( kay - ah - naw )--
Gender: Mare
Height: 14.3 hh
Rarity: Very Rare
Story: Wind whipped through the ashen feild, spreading the blackened embers almost as ferociously as the fire had just been moments before. Smoke was rising from the dark patches in the charred grass. Burns were seared onto the skin of every horse, turning their once-beautiful fur into a gray mess.
"Kayahna?" a small voice masked in quivers spoke up. A wheeze and a cough sputtered out just behind the weak whinney.
Suddenly the soft sound of hooves against earth arose from a cloud of dust and smoke. Out came a beautiful horse, lightly dotted in black spots as if the moon put them upon the mare herself. Her long white mane matched mystically with the rest of her body, and it was blown back in a sudden gust of ashy wind. "Lucia? I'm right behind you." her voice was like as gentle as silk and as sweet as honey, almost matching her younger sister's. "Come here, you're filthy." she nudged Lucia towards her, sweeping off several clumps of debris that had tried to weave into her soft red flank with her long tail. "Have you seen Rebecca?" Kayahna said softly as she kept picking pieces of ash, burnt skin, and dirt out of Lucia. Rebbeca, their mother, had disapeared just moments after the first fire started up.
Kayahna remembered the screams and pounding of hooves erupting from scared horses as if had occured just moments ago. But, in truth, it had been several hours since the worst of the flames had died away. But only until now had most of the herd been broken and scattered apart, scorching across the earth with massive bounds as they tried to avoid being engulfed in flames. "No. Maximus said he saw her heading towards the river. We should check there." Maximus was their dad, and he was almost an exact replica of Kayahna. Except, or course, her famous spots which no one could quite figure out where they came from. Rebecca looked like Lucia, with the pretty red skin and a black base. The only faulter was Lucia's adorable white socks, which made all the mares go "Aww!" whenever she walked by.
"I'm sure at least two thirds of the herd packed themselves in the river... We should search around first for any injured foals. There are probably a dozen foals running around mother-less right now." Lucia's eyes got wide, and Kayahna could tell she suddenly got nervous. "Yeah. Scary, huh? Now we should look around." Lucia nodded quickly, then prances forward with skippy leaps.

DAM's name: Ebony
Gender: Male
Height: 14.3 hh
Rarity: Very Rare
Story: "Ebony! This foal is refusing to wash!" "Ebony! My mane has a branch stuck in it!" "Ebony! My sister is being mean again!" Ebony sighed. This had all started after he did one good thing. He wasn't cut out for being a pillar of society. He thought back to the day it had all started...
After waking up and shaking the sand from his pelt, Ebony had wandered over the oasis, like he did every morning. He dipped his head in the water, then shook his head, his mane leaving swirls of sand drifting on the surface of the pool. He then climbed to the top of a sandy hill, letting the faint breeze cool him. He was watching the endless sea of gold as it twisted and turned beneath his feet, when a shrill cry shattered his thoughts. He spun around quickly, narrowly missing a tangle of rope. Stumbling back, he saw the threat fully. Men mounted on horses, their eyes rolling widly, advanced towards the oasis, shouting loudly. The horses kicked up sand, adding to the confusion, out of place in the peaceful morning. While others stood, unbelieveing, Ebony turned and ran. Tripping in his haste, he stumbled ungracefully but picked up the pace again, until he was far from the "camp". Ebony should have felt scared, but he really felt quite happy. There was only two known horses in the area with long manes, and the other had been lame, an easy target for the humans. He continued to travel, at walking pace now. The run had taken it's toll, and he was tired and thirsty. "I should have reached water by now.." he said worried. A while later, as he was about to give up altogether, he heard worried neighing from behind a dune. Walking closer, he saw another human caravan. There were horses tied together and held by a man there, but none from his herd. The man tried to put a strange brown thing on the first horse's back, but it kicked out at him, unable to move away. Before he could move, they saw him. "Help!" the strange horses cried. "N-no!" he said, frighted my so many men in one place. "Please!" they cried, louder. "U-h..." he managed, advancing. Then, making up his mind, he ran towards them. The men were too stunned to react, and he kicked hard, breaking the ropes. "C'mon!" he called, and ran. After he had gone a distance, he stopped. Most of the horses had kept up, and they grouped behind him. "You saved us!" they called. "Sure.." he said, unsure. "We would like to invite you into our herd." an old stallion said kindly. "I'd love to." Ebony replied.
That's where it started. Now he was expected to solve every little problem, and it was driving him mad. H ehad continued his life without a care for his old herd, although he had missed the oasis..
