▪ Whelkon Name:
Aurian
▪ Personality (About 200 words):
Aurian is not the easiest of whelkon to define. Whenever he speaks he is an easy conversationalist and a good companion, sensitive to others' moods and tactful in his speech and manners. The thing is he hardly does, often preferring the silence of the forest or the solitude of sheltering trees to other whelkons' companionship. He's not anti-social, he's pretty civil when spoken to and still follows the herd wherever they go. But beyond looking out for them as a fellow herd member, he keeps to himself.
Yet Aurian for all his aloofness is also very wise and shrewd. There are few other whelkon as skilled at reading the signs of nature: weather, wind, plants and other creatures' actions. He is also adept at finding food and water, or shelter that can hold in the fiercest storms. In any emergency he is the most coolly calm, level-headed and quick to react. He is cold, yes, but he also loves the little welks and is generally very kind toward babies of any kind. A contradiction of sorts, Aurian is, combining an unusual maturity, kindness and wisdom with a strange incapacity (or perhaps unwillingness) to trust others of his kind.
▪ Short Story (300 words max or disqualified):
Aurian was three when his younger sister was born; an accident as his parents had not intended to have another welk so soon. He would soon dislike her as she took all his parents' attention, leaving a seething Aurian on the side. He grew cold toward them, but even so he never hated her, simply disliked the way they forgot him whenever she was around.
That all changed the day the herd met the humans.
They were ambushed suddenly, and in the ensuing chaos Aurian found himself fleeing with only his sister alongside. They ran for hours before his sister, then only 5 years, collapsed of exhaustion. Aurian stopped too - and realised the forest was silent. The humans had let them go.
But their ordeal had just began: their herd was gone. They searched and searched to no avail; the humans had taken them. They would eventually, through much hardship, learn to fend for themselves for nearly two years before they found another. Aurian changed much in that time: he became like a father to his sister, and in the harshest times it was her need for him that drove him to keep going. Through illness, near-starvation, attacks by bigger predators and vicious winters that would leave him with white streaks on his shoulders, her being there gave him reason to live when he wanted to die. In time they built a bond that would stay forever.
Unfortunately however, that experience also changed Aurian permanently. He had grown up too fast, taking so much responsibility, and was too wise even for his years. The innocent arrogance and the passion that once marked him was gone. His sister eventually found a mate and moved on. Aurian, however, remained an aloof and quiet whelkon. Even now he is still one.
▪ Why you want this Whelkon (Few sentences):
I like purple XD But seriously I do, and this very subtle near-lilac hue is beautiful, especially with the contrasting black and white stripes.
