Wondering how in the world I always manage to get myself into these situations I slowly pushed the rotten door open. Opening half way the hinges snapped making the door fall with a bang and sending up a puff of dust. I froze, if the dead weren't awake already then they certainly would be now after that, smiling inwardly at my own joke I took my first nervous step into the old house. I frown at the thought of my friends safe outside giggling at my misfortune of pulling the shortest straw. Who else would have been so unlucky really? My small torch is little comfort in the size and darkness of the house, an imposing set of stairs leads up to the next floor, obviously before it's deterioration it had been magnificent. At regular intervals bannisters wrapped with evil looking dragons seem to claw at the posts they are forever attached to in the flickering light of my torch. Coming to the decision that stone or not I didn't want to pass those unwelcoming guardians of the stairs I turned my attention to the rooms on this floor. Shivers run up my spine and I barely suppress a gasp as out of the corner of my eye I see a dark shape enter one of the rooms to my right. My heart fluttering like a butterfly straining to get out I eventually calm myself, I reassure myself that it was just a trick of the light and that my brain is working over time because of being in such a place. I notice cobwebs hanging over the door, obviously untouched for a long time, an internal struggle raging inside myself I walk slowly to the door. I have been always taught to conquer my fears and my Dad would tell me to go see for myself if something scared me; like the usual monsters in the cupboard type thing all small children would think of. This was a bit different but I wanted to prove to myself that there was really nothing there.
Taking a calming breath I pushed open the door, quickly rubbing my hand against my jeans to remove the dusty cobwebs, and immediately shone my torch into the room. As I thought there was nothing there at all, so I walked into the small room with a smile on my lips, trying to step lightly on the carpet because of the dust pluming up at the slightest disturbance. A long mirror stood at the end of the room and I walked towards it, drawn to it because there was no dust or markings or anything on it, as if someone had brought it into the house that day. I frowned in confusion but it seemed like an ordinary enough mirror, no distorted reflections as my mind was expecting, nothing at all. I nearly jumped out of my skin as I heard a loud bang. spinning round I see the door has swung shut. Panic begins to rise in my chest again and then I hear it. A strange noise, but one I seem to understand although it's no language I have ever heard before, a voice asking for help and asking for me to find it. A dark shape had coalesced in the mirror and I ran to the door pulling hard on the handle, it wouldn't open and the voice became louder, the shape in the mirror seemingly writhing in distress. Putting all of my weight into pulling the door open it swung open reluctantly and I ran out of the mirror room, to the front door, where I stopped suddenly. Ok so I am scared silly, but someone or something needs my help, so I need to not be selfish and help. A horrible feeling that it might be some sort of trick or trap blossomed in my mind but I pushed it away quickly. I needed to be brave. My heart set now I knew where I needed to go. I needed to go up those stairs. I needed to face those stone guardians and rescue what ever was here. I cautiously watched the stone dragons as I began making my way up the stairs, half way up I found myself becoming more determined, they were not moving all I needed to do was get up this mountain of dust and marble. In what I can only imagine as looking comical I stepped out into what seemed to be thin air, except it wasn't, the carpet had risen and was flipping me back down the stairs. In a cartwheel of arms and legs I tumbled back down to the hallway, the stone dragons now coming to life and laughing maniacally. I glared up at them no longer scared but annoyed at them from stopping me on my quest.
Getting to my feet I decided to run up the stairs, hitching my bag over my shoulder I ran as fast as I could, jumping over the tails
of stone dragons trying to trip me up. When the carpet started to move I jumped from side to side of it until finally I made it to the top. Doing a cheer and a very silly dance I ran to the end of the corridor, away from the hissing and cracking of the creepy guardians. The corridor had no windows, just long and twisting, a passage of cracked paper and walls dripping with cobwebs. It felt like hours of being in a maze before a large black door loomed before me in the darkness. Taller than any of the doors and just like the mirror seemingly untouched by time, the wood seemed to reflect my image back in a distorted mockery of my face, but I was determined now. Seizing the handle I pulled it open without a second thought, bracing myself against a storm of wind that seemed to blow through the opening, purple scratching claws of mist and wind. Nothing was going to stop me now, I moved into the room, ignoring the wind clawing at my clothes, pulling me back obviously not wanting me to be there until... silence.
I opened my eyes. The room was full of grandeur, statues of amethyst dragons coiled around mighty pillars holding the distant ceiling up, twisted grins across their exquisitely carved faces. There at the end of the room, faintly lit, was a pedestal with a purple velvet cushion with something I couldn't make out resting on it. I moved closer and realized it was an egg; the most ominous looking egg I had ever seen but one that looked so very beautiful. I heard the voice again but now it was no longer in pain, "welcome Mihochi, you have been the first to not run away from this house, the house of the owners of my parents. They kept me safe here so that one worthy would find me. The tests you experienced were for your worth. There are no monsters here only me. Now go, take me from this place and I shall be forever by your side". Taking the egg into my hand, a tingling sensation ran through me, while purple mist in the shape of claws spewed from the egg lifting me into the air. Closing my eyes in fright I felt the sensation of flying before my feet came to rest on solid ground again. Fearful of what I would find I slowly opened my eyes to find myself standing at the broken door of the entrance to this strange house. No longer did it hold any fear for me because I knew it's secret. The secret held tightly to my chest.
