Username: Nikki
Equid's name: Jack
Short story:

Jack, that was what they called her. Something about some pumpkin king. Except that she knew that pumpkins couldn't be kings, so it didn't make any sense. But she didn't argue, as she often never spoke to them at all. Not that she could, being a mute. Yeah, you read that correctly: a mute. She had been a mute for as long as she could remember, but apparently she had her 'first words' just like every other Equid. But no one seems to know why she is a mute now, proclaiming that she came running back to the herd one late afternoon when she was really young, her eyes wide and trying to shout out. But no sounds came. Jack honestly doesn't remember anything about that day, or any time before it and several months after. It was like waking up from a haze, really, with no recollection of anything at all. Sometimes there were fuzzy images of time during what everyone started calling 'the dark matter'. That, at least, she understood. It was supposed to be a reference to the strange lack of information that, while it exists, cannot be seen or studied. Though, it could be another quiff about how she herself is dark matter. They liked to do that, poke fun at her because she couldn't retaliate. It was harmless fun, really, but rather annoying.

Like this Jack thing. Her mother had apparently died soon after she was born, so she wasn't there to stop the others from renaming her Jack after the memory loss. In fact, no one can really recall her actual name either. More dark matter. Perhaps they were right in calling her that. Dark matter, I mean. Jack? No, no that still didn't make any sense. But she answered to it, just as she did for Pumpkin, Orange, Stripes, and a good dozen other color refferenced names. Like-

"Hey Peaches!" Her ears twitched at the noise and she raised her head and turned, frowning a little. She wasn't even sure who this one was, but he seemed to know her. Peaches. Such a girly name. She would have prefered Jack to that one. But she nodded regardless, turning her body as well to face him. He looked like he had just ran a marathon or something as he stopped, gasping for air. "Peaches, someone said they know who you are!" He probably didn't mean to yell, it was just the only way he could force the words out of his already worked up lungs. It was no trip to come flying up the steep mountain to find her in her usual dayly wandering. And for all his efforts, she looked skeptical. Of course she did, Jack often had strangers who would hear of her story say that they knew the answer. And yet every one of them told a different story, a false one that they could not remember the beginning of once they had finished. She was getting a little tired of it.

"Come on Peaches!" Stop calling me Peaches! She wanted to shout, shuffling backwards across the rock as the equid grabbed onto her mane and started trying to pull her along. Jack didn't even know this one, why was he bothering her? She resisted for a few moments, until they both started to slip downward. Jack snorted, suprising him by starting down the the incline back to where the others usually gathered. This had better be good.

Sorry, but I'm withdrawing. She's so pretty, though! Good luck to everyone...

Oh great - and now I feel so guilty, taking away some else's chance at getting her...

Equid's name: Karina
Short story:
Karina was born as a white foal, a very peculiar one at that. She always loved to play in the smoldering heat. She never sweat like the other equids and she was usually cold during windy days. She hardly slept at night because she claimed that she had nightmares. She led a pretty mundane life, she lived her life like any other Wild Mountain Equid, just living day by day following her herd until her legacy began...............
As she began to sleep she was awakened to the morning sun beating down on her back 'That's odd' she thought as she opened her eyes and realized it wasn't the morning sun it was the sun that enchanted her dreams. As she glanced around she saw it dance around her, then she felt the most amazing sensation as it illuminated her skin and warmed her heart. She awoke with a start, and all she remembered was the burning sun, making her wonderful dream feel like a nightmare. She then got up and explored the area. As she wandered further away from her sleeping herd she noticed how warm the night air was. She loved the warm weather. It made her think about all the nights she was enchanted by dreams of the sun, she would jolted awake by her dream-like nightmares when all the others of her herd were asleep. She would wander around exploring the land at the herd's current location. Then, since she knew it was useless to try to go back to sleep she would wait untill dawn, and stare at the sun as it arose. That morning something changed, the sun turned a vibrant orange and flew at her turning the majority of her coat a beautiful orange color. All of her life she felt she was connected to the sun but until the morning the sun rose that day she never KNEW.

Equid's name: Asta, meaning as bright as a star.
Short story:

(The use of my only other Equid, Fallen, is in here.)

My parents tell me it was a special day when I was born. One that kind of plagued my world secretly, but one that for others, gave them a symbol for who I am. I was already a special foal that was destined to be great in our mountain range, born from two of the strongest and fairest horses in the land. Both gorgeous and noble and had the hearts of all the Equids. They had been together for such a long time with out any mention of a true romance, though it was suspected by all the gossipy little horses, until one day news that they were expecting a baby. With that one little slip by some close friend of theirs, or an observant filly seeing the signs of pregnancy, or just normal gossip among the horses, what ever caused it made this wild craze and adoration for my whole family. It also started this whole popularity thing for me, like I was some sort of goddess. And I hated it.

And to top that off, like I wasn't special enough, I was born of a very rare day. The night of a blue moon. Blue moons from our understanding only 7 times per 19 years. Not a lot. But my was very special because it was a full blue moon. Not only that, but they signify good luck. Thus, I was named Asta, meaning bright star. I was supposed to be a gift from the heavens, a special, special gift. They probably expected some glorious glowing baby to plop out, with wings and all. I imagine it kinda funny to see the effect of my silly little squirming body coming out and how they were all disheartened. I was told otherwise, but parents are suppose to be like that.

Now I walk around, seeing the horses staring at me with envy, fear, or adoration. Thinking I will steal all the boys, thinking I have some secret power that can kill a horse right on the spot with just a look, thinking that I am still their symbol of good luck. But I am nothing. I am just a normal Equid. I don't have powers, I don't hold anything that I can use to be superior above others heads, and I don't want it. I just want to be normal. I don't want to walk around having others acting like they owe or should fear me. I have done nothing. And instead of that fun loving god they expect, I backfired into a self-destructive and snappy filly. Don't they see I don't want popularity? Don't they see I don't deserve it? I am just glad I haven't turned into an arrogant, self-absorbed queen.

Things got better when I met Fallen. At first she treated me like the others, she was kinda one of the fearful ones, yet adored me at the same time. She would peep at me behind the flanks of her Equid buddies with her large aqua eyes. I couldn't stand her along with the rest of them. And early that morning I had accidentally snapped at my father for trying to get me to go out and make friends. It caused this whole stupid scene, and I regret what I do to my parents. I should be so much more. After that event everywhere I went I was followed by scolding eyes. I slept alone under a little rocky crevice, silently crying in my own self-pity and hatred. A soft brush when over my back, and I turned expecting my parents who had found my secret little spot and was preparing for an apology which I would probably push aside with loathing comments to tell them to leave, when I saw familiar aqua eyes, but with a darkening emotion in them. A gasped and pushed away, contact wasn't on my list of things that happens to me regularly, and she looked a little startled herself.

Equid's name: Seraphina (I've been using this name for a flame colored mare on a roleplay. It means "the burning one" in Hebrew, and I thought it would fit perfectly for this mare ^^)
Short story: All you could hear were the sounds of pounding hooves and terrified whinnies. Smoke saturated the cool, crisp, mountain air making it hot and full of ashes. Equids lashed their tails and pinned down their long ears with fear, but none in the herd made a move to get out of the way of the flames. A stallion's voice rose above the wind that had picked up. "Everyone go, but I'm staying. Gemini is still in the trees, and I can't leave her." he whinnied. Hesitation erupted throughout the herd, but they reluctantly galloped away from the trees, to a hilly clearing about two miles away. Meanwhile, Gemini's amazing hearing had picked up the sounds of her mate's voice. It brought a smile to her face despite the pain of giving birth. She winced, as finally a small Equid foal was born. The smoke and wind had become deafening, and the fire was nearly surrounding the mother and newborn foal. Walking on wobbly legs, the filly stood up, her little tail flicking side to side. Instinct, even at less than 5 minutes old, kicked in. THe small filly wobbled out of the woods, without her mother. What was she to know? But knowing, and realization that she had left her mother washed over her. She whinnied, which came out a little squeal. A large stallion approached her, frightening the poor baby Equid. Her father murmured reassuringly in the foal's ear, giving her a name. "Seraphina; the burning one." he nickered softly, looking desperatly into the trees. Where was Gemini?

The fire burned closer, finally engulfing the forest. Seraphina grabbed onto her father's tail, who was battle scarred and chaffed from the fire and smoke. She was lead up onto a hill, overlooking the forest. The fire was dying out, but not only that small forest had been destroyed. The drinking hole at the bottom of the mountain was filled with ashes, making it pretty much undrinkable. Burnt trees, branches, leaves and all sorts of things lay dead, black, and scared with the dangerous fire. Even some of the grass was smoky and tasteless, black and awful even to look at. Just a flicker of flame remained, and it was... moving? Little Seraphina, nicknamed Fina, squealed. She moved with her father down the hill towards her mother, and for the first time she nursed from her mother, satisfying her hunger and burning throat. Slowly, they made it back to the herd.

The loud whinnies of rejoicing and happiness awoke an off-white horse. Her coat was splashed with a firey chestnut color, lighter towards her belly. The color continued down her legs, leaving four perfect, white coronets near her hooves. Blinking rapidly, her green eyes sparkled like emeralds despite her old age. She looked up to see her herd members, minus a tiger-striped stallion and firey chestnut mare. Seraphina stood up, stretching her legs and flicking her long tail. Fina smiled at the aftermath of her dream. After all these years, she still relived the day she was born. Eleven years had passed quickly, and that day even faster. The mare fell asleep once again to dream about something different for once. Her whole life, and this time she awoke to the bright sun peeking out from the horizon. It was red as fire, flickering and glowing. Seraphina's eyes closed on it, but never reopened again.

(If I do end up adopting this mare, I'll also be doing stories about the middle of her life, after she was born and before she died.)
(Still looking it over ^^.)
