I like your first idea for that color. Though, if you would like some honest comments, I think you should vary your brindling/quipping a little more... maybe you should try and use a very small pen (size 2 or 1) and zoom in quite much, I think it would look different then.
About the eyes of that equid - I like their color, but maybe you should draw the pupil and use some lighter and darker variations of the same color, to let it look more real. Plus you could add one little white spot to resemble a light-reflection...

But a great job on your first drawn equid, I'm sure you'll be into this very fast. <3
