Name: SlinkyGender: FemalePersonality: Slinky has a warm, mature, and modest personality. She is always ready to lend a helping hand to those who need it, takes on her share of any responsibility and blame, and expects no credit for her work. Admittedly, she can be a little simple, and a bit softhearted, and insecure. Her main priority is helping the helpless, and she ignores her own needs rather then let others go untended.
Slinky's maternal instincts are strong. The more helpless something is, the more she desires to care for it. She adores the children and the child-like of all species, and has a special tenderness for the sick. Admittedly, she can be a little overzealous in her TLC, and sometimes gives a bit more love then necessary. She has a bit of trouble accepting that she's no longer needed, and can get depressed if she has no one to care for. She's also prone to worrying, and overprotecting.
Slinky would be the first to admit that she's not the smartest dragon around. She's gullible, softhearted, and has no interest in the academic side of things. In spite of this, she does have more common sense then she gives herself credit for. She is a slow thinker, but can and does come to logical conclusions, and can stay focused. Unfortunately, if her heart and head come into conflict, the former is the hands down champ.
Slinky has little self-confidence, and can be quiet, but she isn't shy. She enjoys the company of others, and feels most at home in a small group. She simply believes that others are more likely to know what they are talking about, and prefers to listen. Nonetheless, when she feels she has a point, she will speak up. Once her position is challenged, she will often hold to it, but won't openly defend it.
Despite not knowing how to read, Slinky loves stories, and eats them up wherever she can get them. The TV, bedtime stories, and imaginative tall tales are boons to her. She has an excellent memory, and can recite most of the stories she has heard. She gets a little wrapped up in them. Does the funny voices and everything. Art:
(I'm not too much of an artist, so I whipped up this short story. It's set fairly early in Slinky's life. Most likely in her early teenhood.)
“Don't worry, boy, I'm sure they'll explain it eventually.”
Andy whined, and looked up at Slinky with large, doubtful brown eyes. Vince rushed into the room, and looked around. After a few panicked moments, he grabbed the phone, which was where it always was, and started chattering in an strange squeaky voice. The conversation was brief, and he left the phone hanging off the hook. Slinky heard him call for Carrie, and then he rushed off again.
“They probably know what they are doing.” Slinky trotted over and scooped the phone back up on the hook. “After all, they always get things right in the end.” Still, she had her doubts. Vince always seemed so calm, so capable. This evening, he was completely unglued. Carrie seemed fine, but she had been acting strange too. Smelling funny as well. What if they were sick? Slinky frowned, then remembered herself, and smiled reassuringly at the boxer.
“Every thing's okay.” She cuddled Andy under the chin. “This whole thing's under control.” Vince stumbled down the stairs, nearly tripping over the suitcase he was carrying, and waved to Carrie when she wasn't rushing madly enough. Slinky winced.
“At least, I hope so.”
Carrie and Vince their goodbyes and ran out the door. Slinky hesitated a moment.
“Andy, dear, you're in charge.”
The dog door wasn't built to accommodate a half-grown dragon, but she managed to squeeze through. She gasped as the glacial air sucked her breath away. It was almost enough to make her crawl back inside, when she heard the guttural sound of the pick-up starting. Gulping, she charged down the stairs. She blinked against the snow as she skimmed the icy earth. Ouch! The ground vanished, and she was flat on her chin. The pick-up was half-way down the drive. Slinky scrambled to her feet. She ran. She jumped. She hit the bed with a muted thud.
Slinky pushed some snow to the side of the bed and curled up tightly. The cab sheltered her from most of the wind, and occasional *puffs* of flame helped keep her warm, but even with these small comforts, it was simply frigid. It was barely ten minutes when she started feeling a bit tired. What was it they said about sleeping when you're cold? Oh, yes. Don't.
“Once upon a time...” Her teeth chattered. “There was a couple with no children.” She *puffed* another flame. “The old man wanted nothing more then a son... even if he where no bigger then his thumb.” *Puff* “He sent his wife to consult with the wizard Merlin...” *Puff* The story went on, and soon the charming tale of Tom Thumb and his misadventures almost completely distracted her from her shivering. She even forgot to breathe fire. Tom had just reached King Arthur's court when Slinky suddenly found she couldn't keep her eyes opened. She curled into a tighter ball.
“...All the ladies where delighted with the new dwarf...” She yawned, and shivered. “And he would attend...” The world slowly turned black. “...tournaments... and...and...”
“Slinky!” Slinky opened her eyes reluctantly to see Carrie's anxious face. The soft, strained voice started scolding, as hands brushed the thin layer of flakes off. Slinky blinked as Vince threw his coat over her, turned her on her back, and hustled her into the cab. He pointed a finger firmly at her, then closed the door. Slinky shook her head wearily and curled up to resume her nap. What was she doing out in the cold anyway?
Carrie and Vince! Slinky shot up and cursed. Her humans where in trouble! And she let herself fall asleep! Slinky pressed her nose against the window, looking at the large white building. Where they in there? She pushed against the door. It didn't do any good. She paced back and forth on the seat. Negligent! It was a big word, but it was the only one that could describe her attitude. Or maybe just plain useless. She slumped down into the seat, feeling thoroughly disgusted with herself. Then the door opened. Her floppy ears shot up.
“I told you everything would be fine. Humans always know what they are doing.” Slinky sneezed and Andy backed up. “Even if they aren't always sensible about explaining it.”
In Slinky's opinion, the story had a perfect ending. Her heart pounded when Vince came back alone, pale as ghost. And, being Vince, he wouldn't say a word. They drove off, Vince ignoring Slinky's frantic questions. They went to pay a visit to Dr. Trice (Slinky thought that it was going a bit overboard, it was just a slight chill.) and then Vince drove off. When he picked the dragon up, he was smiling. Tired, but smiling. Slinky started sneezing like crazy, and she was left in front of the heater for a day and a half. Then, Carrie came home, and she had a...
“WHAAAAAAAAAAA!”
“Carrie! The baby is crying again!” Slinky shouted, then sneezed again. She waited anxiously for Carrie to stumble out in her robe, and enter the nursery, then relaxed as the crying stopped. Yes, humans always knew what they were doing. It was simply a matter of trusting them. Slinky smiled to herself, sneezed, and curled up for the rest of the night.
Did Carrie remember to test the bottle's temperature?
