The New Legend
Sunlight peered through the window, shining on my beadspread. Slowly I opened an eye, and closed it. Opened the other. I grumbled, closing both eyes, begging the sun to go away so I could sleep. But I was forced to wake up when there was a knock on the door, and Jeremy, my brother, walked in. Sighing I sat up, wiped the sleep out of my eyes, and grabbed a clean-sweat shirt. Pulling it over my head I turned to Jeremy, angry at him for waking me up. Sure, it was the first day of school, but heck, he couldn't let me sleep in for 5 more minutes?
"Seriously, Germ, I can get up on my own," I told him, even though that was a total lie. One time my parents let me get up on my own, but I ended up sleeping through the whole day. Pffft. They would never let me do that again. I shuffled past my older brother, eager to start the day without Germ bullying and ruining my life. I call him Germ because it's like Jerm, which is short for Jeremy. It's nice to imagine spelling it that way. When I got downstairs, I turned the corner into the kitchen, where my father and mother were eating pancakes. I can't believe it was pancakes again. I shoved a full piece into my mouth messily, then ran out the door, grabbing my backpack on the way. I jumped on my bike and started peddling my fastest. A new school means a new life; I couldn't risk being late. We had recently moved to Egypt and I was going to be the new kid. Suddenly I stopped peddling, seeing a sight which scared the broad daylight out of me. Our new school looked like a haunted house; it's windows were shattered, and the wood was moldy and old. The wind made the door creak open and close, and it seemed everything was dark and dusty inside. My new friend, which I had made during the short time I had been here in summer, saw me and stood up in her seat, waving. I wearily looked around. This did not look like a school...at all. I shivered. I turned back to Ginger (my friend). She looked like this was normal...she wasn't taking any notice of the odd school at all. I wearily sat next to her and jumped as something slimy touched my back; disgusted, I turned around to see the chair had growing mushrooms on it. I grabbed a stray stick that was on the floor and pushed them off of the chair, then sat down. "Is school usually like this?" I asked Ginger. She shook her freckled head, her fizzy orange hair flying up. "Nope. But the new school..." she coughed, and I realized there was something she wasn't telling me. "The new school had to...well...be...um..." Suddenly the door whipped open and a tall, black haired woman walked in. She wrote something in white chalk on the old chalkboard. I covered my ears, hearing a screeching sound from the chalk. When the tall, black-haired woman stepped back, we knew her name. It said
"I am Mrs. Sekhmet ."
It seemed I had heard the name 'Sekhmet' before, but I couldn't get my mind on it, and I didn't have much time anyway because Mrs. Sekhmet examined the class, looking all the kids in the eye. When she saw me, her eyes turned a burning red color, and she exposed red fangs. Okay, so, I don't believe in vampires, but this was creeping me out. Mrs. Sekhmet continued observing the class before she sat down on her own chair. "We have a new kid in class," she announced. "Would you please stand up, Jades?"
I stood up, wondering how in the world she knew my name.
Mrs. Sekhmet bared her red fangs at me, and told me to come to the front of the class. I stood, shivering, staring at all the kids. Something about Mrs. Sekhmet didn't feel right...
When I got to the front of the class, Mrs. Sekhmet wrapped her thin arms around me and leaned over, whispering in my ear;
"I have my eyes on you, Legend of Jades!"
It was like a bull roaring in my ear. Even though it was a whisper, it was like a hissing sound. It was like, louder than the chalk screeching on the chalk-board. She pushed me back to my so-called desk, which looked more like a stool in a shape of a table. I tumbled first-face into it, and heard other kids laughing at me.
----
After school, I had a lot to think about. What was up with our haunted school? What was Ginger not telling me? And most importantly, what was wrong with Mrs. Sekhmet ? She said `I have my eyes on you, Legend of Jades!`
Legend? I don't think I'm any kind of legend... According to Jeremy, anyway.
----
The next day of school was worse. Everyone kept glaring at me. At one point Mrs. Sekhmet asked us who our favorite Egyptian Goddess was. Everyone said 'The Eye of Ra', except me. I told Mrs. Sekhmet it was Bastet, cause she is a cat and I love cats. When I said that Mrs. Sekhmet took me into the hallway, where everyone could see me. She yelled some curse words and punched me in the gut, then told me to get back to the class and stay there. I have no idea what I did wrong, but it must had been bad because no one would talk to me. Ginger looked like she was guilty, but not even her would talk to me.
----
When I got home, I did some research about Egyptian mythology. Here's some:
`Hathor was the goddess of joy, motherhood, and love. She looked after all women. She was the goddess of music and dancing, as well. Dead women were identified with Hathor, as men were identified with Osiris. She has a sun disk on her head and cow horns. Sometimes she had cow's ears or was a whole cow.
But she had another side as well, as Sekhmet, the Eye of Ra, the destructive Sun Goddess. The Egyptians knew that the Sun brought life, but they also knew that the desert Sun could kill you.
Ra, the Sun God, was angry with mankind, because they laughed at him. He said that he'd send down his anger as Sekhmet, the Eye of Ra. She went down to Earth, killing men, and drinking their blood. She started to frighten Ra, who only wanted to punish Mankind, not destroy them all. So he dyed some beer red, to look like blood. When Sekhmet saw the beer, she was thristy for blood, so she drank it all, got drunk and went to sleep. When she woke up, Ra persuaded her to stop killing Mankind.`
Wait, was her name Sekhmet? Isn't that our teacher's name? I am seriously worried now.
----
That night, I couldn't sleep at all. Sometimes my eye-lids would close on me and Mrs. Sekhmet would be there in a dream, hissing and baring her red fangs. Every time it was the same message:
"Beware, Legend of Jades!"
----
At morning, I wouldn't get up. Even when Jeremy called my parents and they scolded me. I had my head dug into my pillow. I didn't want to get beat up by Mrs. Sekhmet again, especially if she was the Eye of Ra. Was that why she had beaten me up; for saying Bastet was my favorite Goddess? Pfffttt. Like I'd ever say she was my favorite...I hate vampires, especially the Twilight saga.
----
But I didn't have much choice; my father lifted me off of the bed and looked me in the eye. With that killing stare I grumpily got out of bed, brushed my teeth, ate some pancakes (again!) and put on a Bastet T-shirt. Then I biked to school, and was stopped by Ginger 10 feet away from the schoolyard. "What is it, Ginger?!" I asked, confused. My freckled friend looked frightened, maybe even aghast of something. "S-s-s-s-she's coming..." she whispered frightfully. Before I had time to reply, she grabbed me by the arm and plunged around the shabby school, diving into a hole in the back of it. We tumbled down stairs that were slick with fungi; one broke underneath my weight and I fell on top of some case. Confused, I edged off of the case, looking down I saw a golden plate with letters engraved;
"BASTET"
Figuring it must be some type of burial ground, I dipped my head to the case, knowing it was rude to step on a dead person-or at least where they were buried. "Sorry, Bastet." I said, then realized what I was saying.
Bastet? The Goddess of cats?
My eyes widened. I stared at the mummy case, memorized. I read the gold plate over and over again; the fifth time I saw small, black letters:
DAUGHTER OF RA
It must be Bastet The Great. My jaw dropped. "Really sorry Bastet!" I wish I had flowers!
Suddenly an arm pulled me away from the mummy case, into a dark corner. Ginger sat next to me.
"I am so sorry Jades. I should of told you everything before, but the Eye of Ra threatened to kill me if I did."
I gazed at my friend, baffled. "You mean Sekhmet?"
Ginger slapped my mouth with her hand. "SHH! Don't you know not to say her true name? She'll kill you!"
I wriggled uncomfortably, "but she wrote it on the chalk-board!"
"Wrote it, not said it. That's why we only call her Eye of Ra, because that's who she is. Boy, you have a lot to learn..."
When Ginger said that, I realized how much learning I was taking in right now. Was there more?!
Ginger went on, stating there was more to learn.
"She hate's Ra's daughter, Bastet. That's why she punished you so harshly when you said she was your favorite Goddess...though it would be about the same if you said someone else that wasn't Eye of Ra! That's why everyone else said Eye of Ra. Anyway, about the old school, the Eye of Ra destroyed it. She told everyone to come to that school...some kids refused and died under her fangs." Ginger paused, shivering. My mind was buzzing; my teacher is Sekhmet! My teacher is Sekhmet!
Ginger continued,
"So she hyptoized the parents so they didn't really know what they were doing-when your's moved here they were hyptoizied to. Also, she ordered everyone to eat pancakes for breakfast."
"What?!" I exclaimed.
Ginger shrugged, "it's her favorite food."
Okay, that is just stupid. But it makes sense...ever since we moved here I've been eating pancakes...
"And it was also said in the legend you would love Bastet, that being said, another legendary warrior was born in the basement Eye of Ra's school. That's why I hid you here...so we might find it. Eye of Ra was chasing me because she knew I was going to tell you, Jades, and warn you," explained Ginger.
My eyes sparked. My friend had risked her life for me. That meant a lot to me, and I bet if this happened to you it would mean a lot also. A warm feeling quaked inside me and our friendship grew stronger. I leaped at my freckled friend, hugging her tightly.
Ginger pushed me off. "Thanks for the hug," she said sarcastically, brushing dust off. "Your welcome," I replied, ignoring her sarcasm. I then looked around the old basement. Ginger said we needed to find the legendary warrior who would help me, so find him we do. But...what did that have to do with me liking Bastet? I stood up, and brushed dust off of myself.
I suppose this 'legendary warrior' thing would be hiding from Eye of Ra, but then that made it harder for us to find it...
I wondered around, and eventually Ginger got the idea and started to help. We looked in every corner, under each abandoned table. I even had the gut to lift up Bastet's mummy case to see if the legendary warrior was under her. Nope.
Then of course I kept on boasting to Ginger on how I touched Bastet's case.
"Not exactly a good thing..." she said.
After a while, I realized Ginger was pretty skittish down here... It was like she was doing something wrong.
Then again I guess we were...not exactly supposed to be down here....
I continued looking, in case we missed the legendary warrior. Then it hit me; shouldn't Ginger know since she had known all that other stuff? I turned around and shouted for her;
"GINGER!"
She didn't come. I had a queasy feeling inside my stomach, like something bad was about to happen. Didn't enough stuff already happen?
I wandered around, nearly petrified to bone of what was about to happen. Don't ask me why, but I just knew it wasn't good....
I finally bumped into something, and looked up to see something I never expected to see.
----
There was a tall woman (my guess Sekhmet) except she had a lion's head. I covered my mouth, but it only made the scream louder. Instead of covering my mouth, I cupped my mouth.
I don't think anyone has ever expected to see a lady that has a lion head.
Sekhmet was holding Ginger close to her chest. Her frizzy orange hair was frizzier than usual; what happens when Ginger gets scared. Her eyes looked terrified; she was staring at me, and deep inside her eyes was more guilt. Was there something else Ginger wasn't telling me?
----
Pffft, well, Sekhmet was certainly not happy. Her lion eyes were furious; she opened her mouth and did a ear-drum busting roar. In fact, her eyes were red. She bared her bloody fangs at me. I winced.
----
"Any last words before you die, daughter?" roared Sekhmet. She was talking to Ginger. My eyes widened like a full harvest moon. Ginger was Sekhmet's daughter?!
Ginger managed to nod under her mother's grip. So Sekhmet released her hold of Ginger's mouth.
----
"Legendary...warrior...is...Bastet's...daughter..." panted Ginger, her eyes full of fear.
Looks like I'll be touching Bastet's case again.
Sekhmet pulled Ginger's neck up so her daughter could look her in the eye; "You weren't supposed to say anything useful!" she snarled. Then they dissapeared with a white dust; I could hear Ginger's voice echoeing right after;
"I'll be in the underworld if you need me..."
So my best friend was dead. Great.
I looked around frantically until I saw Bastet's case. It took me about an hour to find it again...this basement must be bigger than I realized.
----
I wasn't sure what to do...but mother's protect their babies, right? So maybe the legendary warrior was with Bastet.
I wish Ginger would of told me if the baby was a boy or girl! It would be rude to mistake Bastet's child.
I would have to open her case.
Okay, you may not think this is a big deal, but opening someone's case feels wrong, and very disrespectful. I winced, and let my hand touch the case. I lifted it up...
----
I screamed again. And this time it was quieter than before...I manged to cover my mouth, not cup it. There were two cat forms...wrapped in whatever you wrap mummy's in. I gazed at it, memorized. Suddenly I felt a finger tap my shoulder, and, astounded, I turned around. A tall man stood with a falcon head, and I could tell he was smiling. "Hello, Legend of Jades, I am Ra, King of the Gods," the falcon announced, looking me in the eye. "Come with me, I shall help you along with my daughter's child," he chirped. I remembered reading some research that said Bastet was Ra's daughter. So that must be who he was talking about. I met his gaze; he looked nice enough. Well, Bastet was nice, so why not her father? Smiling, I picked up Bastet's child carefully, only to drop it under it's heavy weight. Ra glanced at me, "I would help, but it's best for you to do it...you'll grow stronger. Besides, Legend of Jades, there will be harder things than carrying that. Oh, much, much, more."
I glared at him, slightly annoyed at him for panicking me. But I figured not to argue with the King of the Gods, and tried again at picking up Bastet's child. Ra chirped and walked away, gliding gracefully up the stairs. He hopped over the one I had broke as if it was easy. I waddled after him, already sweating from the mummy case's weight. Before I got to the stairs I fell over from it's heaviness. I glared at Ra again who was waiting at the top of the stairs for me, and had to force myself not to curse at him. How dare he make me carry this heavy case all the way up those heavy stairs! Bracing myself, I stepped on the slippery step, almost instantly slipping under the weight and the moldy moss. But something studied me, and I turned to see that the mummy case was gone. Confused, I frantically looked around. How had it just dissapeared? And who studied me? I glanced at Ra; he had his back turned and was tapping his foot impatiently at the top of the stairs. Suddenly something swept me off my feet, and I did a face-plant on the stairs. I nearly threw up at how close the mold was to my face. It was rubbing against me. Then I heard a meow; managing to crane my neck I saw that the mummy case had unwrapped itself and birthed a cat.
Bastet's daughter was born.

I suppose there would be more...but I only wanted to go up to the point when she finds the egg, because heck, it's already long as is ^^! If you want to read what happens next, I'll be making a full story out of it and posting the link sometime later.
