Waiting for you atop the same old oak you met Angelquartz on is a shimmering silver tabby looking down on you with cold, luminous eyes. Draped around their shoulders is a scarf of pure moonlight that only serves to enhance their radiance.

This must be Selene, the moon you were tasked to find.

You hesitantly introduce yourself, which makes him break into a beaming smile. “Ah, yes, a little star. I’ve been expecting you. Angelquartz says you want to know where Helios is, hm? Well, don’t bother! The forest will be fine with just me.”

As you watch, however, a little bit of her radiance fades from her pelt, taking the light of the forest with it. Flowers wilt a little, birds fluff up their feathers, even the fae who populate this place shrink a little further into their resting places.

You open your mouth to refute Selene’s claim, but he barrels right past you. “Sure, we had an argument about little stars like yourself before she up and vanished, but with all of you by my side we can keep this forest as lively as she can! Come on, what do you say? Join me and we won’t need her at all.”

Oh boy. This is going to be tougher than you thought, won’t it? You think back to the Seasons, how desperate and wilted they looked without the Sun’s glowing rays. This isn’t going to go nearly as well as Selene thinks it will.

and tonight, the stars and the crescent moon seem less radiant. it is as if their warmth and luminance had been sapped from them, turning them into nothing more than heaps of cold, distant rubble in the realms far beyond yours. there's a new chill in the evening breeze that bites right down to the bone.

even the gentle curls of angelquartz's bangs seemed to droop after the day's news. yet, ae still hovered over the dying tongues of flame, their paws flapping in a frantic frenzy to keep it burning.

"i got it this time!" sequins of firelight danced off the tip of aer lashes. "it only took me half the night, but it's progress!"

the tiny flame seemed to startle at their enthusiasm and extinguished in a puff of smoke.

"...oh."

Optional Blurb: The fire being stomped out within the forest made Baby stumble backwards, quivering at the darkness. A glowing pair of green eyes burned in her mind, and she shook her head wildly, with reassuring whispers beneath her breath. "Not real. Not real."

Baby found more sticks, placing them into a pile. This time, however, she also found a small can of gasoline she had stashed [don't ask], and doused the sticks before setting them ablaze with a spark from her paws once more.

The light comforted her, but the idea of the flame going out again terrified her.

honestly, sirius didn't know what they needed fires for, since they were all cats with decent night vision. however, if they need help, she could never let herself ignore their pleas...

Optional Blurb: McBean is late to the party, but she understands the assessment. She gathers as much wood (as well as other flammable woodland litter) and dump it in a pile. While no one is looking, McBean "borrows" someone's already lit fire and sets her pile alight. Piece of prey!

Whatever the gods have in store for the fires must have some kind of meaning; McBean just finds this whole thing perplexing. She just hopes her fire won't go out...
