The scent of sea overtook anybody's senses, all of those except the cats who had nothing left to lose.
Even as the earth tilted on its axis, those who needed a way always seemed to find an open door in choices that the normal ones would see nothing. Sometimes she wondered what it would be like to live on the ocean, with nobody else around but the sea creatures who could not speak the same words as you. Salt always seemed to flood into her every crevice each time she dipped close to the water. With her eyes closed, sometimes she allowed herself to imagine the way the water would rock you back and forth with no ulterior motives.
A Hunter in action but a dragon rider at heart. She could never get close enough anymore, it all laid just within her reach but yet too far for her to contact. Her coat missed the rustling of the sea winds, all she could do was gaze off of the cliff that they had once shot off of without a doubt in the world.
The other dragon riders had told her to leave the sea behind her, that with the dragons no longer allowed to contact them there was no more point in reserving the hope to continue. Yet, Neinna refused to give into the doubt that seemed to trickle into every past dragon riders. Seeking solace in hunting, Neinna found that hunting was the easiest way to get close to the sea for the longest amount of time. Even now, as all the dragon riders slunk away from the spotlight, trying their hardest to avoid drawing any attention to what is going on beneath the surface, she always managed to slip away before any other cat noticed she was even there.
With the riders finding a way to join together to continue riding despite it being banned, Neinna found herself using the time as much as she could. Every moment she got to steal with her dragon, she took. Stealing back her freedom from the power abusive king felt like glory shining down her back even in the darkest moments. Even when the king found time to glower down at her, she held her head high, refusing to slip, refusing to give him anything to use against her or any of her companions. Dragon riding was a passion not only for her, but for most of her friends, and she refused to slip and let that freedom get away from them just when they finally had a hold on it again.
With her head held high, she glanced out at everything else going on around her. The kingdom always seemed to be caught in a state of hustle and bustle, one that a cat could easily get lost in if they weren’t used to it. As a cat who joined as an outer wall cat, Neinna caught many cats giving her judgemental looks, which is why dragon rider became her escape in a way, letting her get away from all the cats who seemed to wish the worst upon her. The loyal Kingdom residents never seemed to like her, as most of them casted judgement upon outer wall cats, saying they should learn how to fend for themselves instead of relying on the Kingdom.
Neinna had seen many outer wall cats leave the Kingdom after days of judgement, the ones who stuck around always seemed to stick to the shadows. The only outer wall cats Neinna had ever seen treated kindly, were the youngest of kits, the ones who couldn't yet help themselves. Even still, they always seemed to catch side-eyes from cats who refused to accept ones outside the wall. Neinna found even more after it was banned, outer wall cats always seemed more comfortable as dragon riders, somewhere they won’t be judged for simply existing. After it was banned, Neinna wasn’t sure she had ever seen more cats try to hide away from the prying eyes that wanted them all gone.
Her dragon was wonderful shades of blue and purple. One of the smallest dragons within the herd, Neinna never minded being subtle in her riding. Once riding was first banned, Neinna missed the grumble of her dragon, the gravely voice in her ear when she was riding, the one that always seemed to soothe the aches deep within her bones. The first thing she did when she began riding again was take her dragon to the sea front.
The dragon riders had started gathering in one of two spots. One was deep within the forest, close enough to the mountains that if you reached out while flying it was likely you could touch them. The other was off the cliff behind the Kingdom, the one that no scouting crew ever went close to in fear of unstable ground. Besides, no cat would ever be foolish enough to stick close to that cliff, right? Just for that reason, the dragon riders all seemed to collectively enjoy that area the most out of the two.
For Neinna, she found a bonus in the fact that off that cliff the river shot down into a delightful waterfall. Behind that waterfall a cave laid tucked away, far enough into the cliff that the only ones who knew about it were ones who heard from those who found it or cats who dove through the waterfall with their dragons. Neinna happened to be one of the first cats to find it. The scent of water always seemed to fill the small cave without ever filling it, allowing it to be her perfect hide out, with the cave just big enough to fit her and her dragon, Neinna was hesitant to tell any other cats about it. So, for a while, she didn’t, simply used the cave as a place for rest beside her dragon after a long day of flight maneuvers to get back used to dragon riding.
Of course, somebody else happened to find her favourite spot as well, and Neinna wasn’t sure she minded having the extra company. Even now, when she’s hunting, Neinna can’t get her mind properly off of being with her dragon. Soon, she tells herself. Soon. Just after this hunt.
