The Squirrel And The Fox

The fight with the rogues had sent them both to a place that's like their world but not quite the same. Dew was not meant to end up with her here- one of Ianthe’s subordinates got scared and used up the bit of magic that Ianthe had stored away for them to “get rid of” Squirrelpuddle and her sister, Radishpounce. They were just carrying out orders, but it went wrong. Very wrong, and by now Radishpounce would be back at the barrier, telling everyone about Ianthe and her planned attack.

Dew was injured, her fur marred by some dark black powder as she lay against the tree, in a state of slight panic and pain. ‘You’re lucky I‘m not allowed to hurt someone who can’t defend themselves.’ That line rang through her head as she watched Squirrelpuddle walk off alone. If she wanted to ignore her warnings that was on her- she was too tired and scared to argue.

“I should follow her…”

“No, she’ll definitely try to kill me…”

“But what if she gets hurt….I mean that was the whole point but…” She lay there worried for what felt like forever. It was only 20 minutes. And somewhere around the 25 minute mark she got frustrated and got herself up, wincing in pain as she did. She looked down the path that Squirrelpuddle had gone down and braced herself for a long walk.

The forest was like theirs in all but smell, something about this place reeked of death itself. Dew knew this place existed, she had been here countless times with Ianthe and their patrol of outsiders. It was how they kept notes on the clan inside the barrier without being seen by them. Only Ianthe and her general, Fiore could move between these “worlds” at will. It was a skill they kept close to them for fear one of their own would use it against them…as if anyone would dare.

Dew was aimlessly walking down the path when she heard Squirrelpuddles voice up ahead.

“Hey! Radish hey! …Why can’t you hear me, damnit!” Hearing the panic in her voice made Dew move faster to catch up to her.

She saw a fading Radishpounce walking down the path, a limp on her back leg. Squirrelpuddle was following her sister along, yelling at her and trying to get her attention. She was so distracted she didn’t even realize Dewhop made her way over to her.

“Hey…! Hey! She can’t hear you. No matter how hard you yell she won’t respond..” She started, her ears perking up as she made sure no one else heard Squirrel’s shouting and decided to come over.

“What….is this?” She asked, sounding a bit scared and defeated as she watched her sister continue to move as fast as she could towards what she assumed was the barrier.

“C’mon we need to get out of here be-” Dew started, before Squirrelpuddle shoved her body into hers, up against a nearby tree. “You are NOT one to give me orders!” She would growl, threatening her with her claws.

“Just listen will you!” Dew winced, her body breaking even more under the impact.
“Your shouting…others probably heard it. We shouldn’t stay here.” she would try to say calmly, leaning her head away from Squirrelpuddles claws.

Squirrelpuddle groaned in defeat, releasing the molly from her grasp as she began pacing a little, watching her sister's ghostly form move away from them.
“Fine. but you have a LOT of explaining to do.”

Chapter 2: The other realm

Time does not flow here like it does on the other side. Ghostly apparitions manifest themselves of those on the other side, only they are not things that are currently happening. They could be things that have happened in the past, or things that are to come in the future. Knowing what time an apparition happened is almost impossible to tell, only those with the sight can control what they see and when.

Here in the other realm, as they call it, 1 day on the outside could be 1 month on the inside. Being inside the other realm had its advantages because of this. Those who were able to control their sights could ultimately come to know anything they want at any moment. Ianthe and Fiore were the only two known who could control the sight. Ianthe’s powers were strong, but not as strong as her mentor Fiore’s. The two of them used to be as close as ever before Fiore cut herself off from the sight and disappeared, concealing her whereabouts from Ianthe and anyone else who would want to look for her.

Those who lived in the barrier and where known as the “Iris Canopy” were interesting specimens to Ianthe. She would spend most of her days in the Other realm, watching them in their past, before they ever came to these cursed lands. Ianthe knew of the world before their memories were wiped from them, and she knew who’s fault it was that they all ended up like this. She held that information close to her chest, but some in her group had their own theories based on Ianthe’s obsession with a certain family.

Ianthe knew that from watching Squirrelpuddle that she would be trouble. So she plotted and made a catalyst of a small amount of her sight magic and gave it to Dew to get rid of Squirrelpuddle. She would have to get rid of her if she ever hoped to get close to the family that took her memories…even if they didn’t remember doing so.

- -
“So..wait….Ianthe has been spying on us..for what? Years? All because my family did something to her..something we don’t remember doing?”

“Thats the growing theory, yes.” Dew responded, limping ever so slightly as she followed the green molly through the forest.

“And where do you fit into all this? Just someone low on the totem pole who gets stuck doing Ianthe’s bidding?”

“It's not like that…..”

“Oh yeah? Then why are you still stuck here with me?”

Dew didn’t know how to respond to that one.

“What I don’t understand is why Ianthe just doesn't….I don’t know. Tell those of us living in the barrier the truth? If it's true and my parents lost their memories…they would probably want them back too?”

“You know as much as I do now…”

“Still ... .It's a lot to wrap my head around…to think this whole time we’ve been living not knowing anything. Not really.”

“When Ianthe recruited me, I was just a kit.” Dew started, still following loosely behind Squirrelpuddle.
“I was told that most who enter this world come in with only their worst memory, only I didn’t have any at all.”

“Ianthe thought it was strange so she took me on and raised me. She kept me at arms length for a long time. I always thought it was because she cared for me….”

“And now?”

“We should keep our voices down…” She said after some time.

The two of them walked in silence for a while until they came upon a place that Squirrelpuddle recognized. Just off the path a small opening in the rocks led into a small tunnel that ended in a cave covered in glowing mushrooms. She and Radishpounce had been inside there plenty of times to rest if a hunt took them far away from the barrier. She knew it was unoccupied and safe- at-least on the outside.

“Hey, we can rest up here. I know this place. Well..this place on the outside. Nothing is ever there, c’mon.”

- -

They held out hope that someone was going to come for them and pull them out. Dew hoped Ianthe would come and get her, despite her royally messing everything up, and Squirrelpuddle just hoped that Radish somehow got to the clan in time to get help. Days would pass where the two of them laid low in the cave, only going out when they absolutely needed to. They knew that time was strange here..and that their impatience was useless if it had only been a few minutes or even an hour in the real world.

Squirrelpuddle was used to the forest's impact on her body- probably more so than anyone in the clan. Her eyes had suffered what they called “a blight” turning her sclera dark. It affected her only on the outside, bearing no ill will on her body as a whole. Despite this familiarity something was still off. Days had passed and neither one of them had gotten hungry or tired. She hadn’t slept- not really- and at first she passed it off as being worried and afraid but now she wasn’t so sure.

The two of them only ever spoke to eachother when they needed to. Squirrelpuddle refused to be friendly but she couldn’t go without having a conversation on occasion. If she hadn’t she feared she might just go mad. She was quickly missing life under the barrier…
“I don’t know how much longer I can hold out just..sitting in here.” Squirrelpuddle would say after a week of waiting. She looked out towards the entrance of the cave and sighed. She wanted to leave and try to find a way out but she already knew what Dew would say-

“We just have to wait longer. I’m telling you theres no way out of here and we can’t risk others finding us.”

Squirrrelpuddle groaned and slammed her paw on the rock wall behind her.

“You keep saying that!” She grit her teeth, sighing before slumping down onto the cold ground.

“And what? You think you’d survive out there if someone found you? These aren’t your woods. You’ll get eaten alive.”

“Yeah…yeah…so you’ve said.”

“Look I’m having about as much as you are okay. Probably less.”

“Oh, yeah? I don’t know, I think I got you beat. Being locked in a strange place stuck in a cave with someone who tried to kill you…not ideal.”

“At least you have people trying to come get you out. If Ianthe wanted me out of here I would be out already.” She admitted, a tinge of sadness in her voice.

“Oh boo hoo. Your evil mentor isn’t here to save your hide. Get over it. She never cared about you and you know it.”

Dew turned her head towards the wall, curling her tail closely around her body.
“Maybe you should just be quiet.”

“Why? Does it hurt your feelings?” Squirrel kept on
“I’m just telling it like it is. She never gave a crap about you and just used you. I think it's kind of pathetic that you thought she would come for you.”

“Enough!” Dew would yell, turning to face Squirrel, her eyes welling up with tears.
“Gods, do you ever just get tired of it?!?”

“Of what?” Squirrel backed down a bit, mostly surprised that she actually spoke up for herself for once.

“Bein so….so mean.” She started, getting her courage to finally speak out after a week of being tormented by her.
“We are to you what you are to us. A-and maybe that doesn't make any sense right now but.”

“It doesn’t”

“Let me finish!” She shouted, rubbing her tears away.
“You don’t know what it was life growing up with Ianthe. With them. We were told that you people living under the barrier were evil. That its your fault that this happened to us.” She gestured to her eyes, the same black sclera that Squirrelpuddle had.

“Your…eyes?” Squirrel started, a confused look on her face.

“Its a mark of the forest. A mark of some beast. Ianthe wouldn’t ever give us many details but…from what I gather it's a mark of death.” She continued as she watched confusion spread across squirrelpuddles face and then fear, and then something else…

“She said that this happens to us because of your family. Because of what they did in their past….I didn’t think that…I don’t know. I didn’t think taking you out was going to be a big deal because you were going to die soon anyways. And Ianthe was worried you were going to expose her intentions on joining the clan.”

“And then your sister…well she just got in the way too. Unlucky for her..because she still has so much time…..”

Squirrelpuddle stayed silent for a long time, just letting the information that Dew told her sink in. She was more confused than ever, but she knew that asking anything would result in an uncertain answer. If she wanted to know anything truly..she would have to get Ianthe to tell her. But how much time would she even have left? If what Dew was telling her was true and she had this mark of death..then she didn’t have forever to figure this out. She was on a time limit.

“It’s a lot to take in, I know…I’m sorry I just…..I guess I’m starting to realize that we aren’t getting out of here” She choked back her tears, letting out a sad pitiful laugh.
“Might as well just tell you everything.”

“So what?” Squirrel started moving to stand up from against the stone wall of the cave.
“We just give up? Is that what your plan was? There's no hope for either of us cause we are marked or whatever?”

“Squirrel….”

“Well screw that, Dew. Screw that. I know you believe everything that comes out of Ianthes mouth but I don't. I let you sit there and talk me down from trying to find a way out of this place…all because you felt like there was no hope.”

“Ianthe wouldn’t lie to me…”

“She wouldn’t!? What makes you so sure of that? She wanted to keep me here. What if this was all part of her plan. What if she wanted you to be here too? Did you ever think of that?”

“I…”

“I refuse to believe we are marked for death. She told you that because she wants to make us give up. You said she can see the future. What if she saw something she didn’t like and tried to prevent it?” Squirrel now had a fire lit under her and she paced back and forth in the cave.

Dew just watched her, her demeanor changing a bit as she went to stand up. She sniffled and pulled back the tears, shaking her head and trying to get herself to snap out of her sadness.

“Right…maybe…I don’t know. It’s just hard to think that she would ever do that to me.”
“But it's a possibility, Dew. And we can’t just sit here anymore and let her get what she wants. I’m going out to find a way out of here. Come with me.”

“You’re being so…nice?”

“I just don’t want to face whatever's out there alone, alright? Like it or not we have to rely on each other from here on out…and i don’t like it. But I'll live.”

- -

With a newfound sense of understanding Dew and Squirrelpuddle headed out of their cave after weeks and finally started to explore the mysterious forest that lay on the outside. Ghostly apparitions of cats they did not recognize would appear from time to time, doing menial tasks like hunting or having a conversation with someone else. Most of the time they couldn’t ever understand or make out what the cats on the other side were saying, but finding them for some reason gave them hope that they were going in the right direction to get out of here.

The two of them, with their walls now fully down, began to grow closer, finding each other's company not totally horrible. With the small possibility of death looming over both of them they had no reason to leave their walls up or be mean to one another anymore. They were, for once, on even playing grounds. The outsiders and the barrier dwellers.

Squirrelpuddle would follow Dew most of the time. She surprisingly became a competent leader for the two of them. Maybe she always was and Squirrelpuddle just never realized it before because she would argue with anything she said or any instructions she would give. They hardly ran into any signs of any of the other beings that would be present here. Which was a good thing because the way that Dew talked about them made Squirrelpuddle genuinely afraid.

Time began to become nonexistent to them both, with the lack of a day and night cycle and the fact that neither of them had to sleep or eat made keeping track of the days harder. What was once weeks turned into months and then almost a year. A year of wandering around in the forest going from point to point trying to find a way to escape the neverending forest. All the while the people on the outside were still unaware of what happened to either of them. Everyone besides Ianthe, that is.

Something happened to Squirrelpuddle during those months, something that she passed off as just a cruel circumstance. Being the only two people to exist in an area led to things that she tried very hard to fight off at first. She wasn’t sure when it first started but she began to notice Dew’s eyes lingering on her more and more as they travelled together. It was easy to talk to her about anything, maybe because if she didn’t she would go mad in her own head. Regardless of the how or the why, she knew deep down that she had feelings for Dew. Would these feelings have been real on the outside if they were given the chance? Probably not. I guess that's why things happen for a reason though.

- -

“Dew, Look.” Squirrelpuddle would point out a clearing in the forest, one of the first signs of something different that they had seen in a long while.

“Oh, wow. It's so open.. How far do you think it goes?”
“I’m not sure…Iv’e never been out this way in the real world..” She started, going to take a step into the open field before Dew stopped her, her ears perking up.

“Wait!..” She looked around, her eyes squinting as she tried to focus in on the horizon.
“Theres someone up there…I can’t tell if it's a ghost or not.” She quieted her voice, ducking down and back into the brush behind them, Squirrelpuddle followed suit.

“If its someone, maybe they aren’t so bad?...They aren’t in the forest, after all.” Squirrel suggested, keeping her voice as quiet as she could.

“You know we can’t take that risk, Squirrel…” She turned towards her, her face softening as she gazed upon hers. The black mark that was once just present on her sclera spread up her furr and around her eyes like a little mask.

“I know, I know…” She tried her best to give a comforting smile to Dew but she just turned her head back towards the field.

“Lets just go back in and try to get around. Find another way to approach the open field.” She turned and fled back into the forest, her form disappearing in the brush. Squirrel sighed and followed suit, but not before getting one more look at the form that was sitting out in the field.

The two of them began the long trek following the trees around the opening and trying to gain space between them and the form they saw before. It took them a few hours of running through the trees to get to a spot they finally felt safe enough to exit and get out onto the open field.

“Man it feels so strange to be out in the open like this…”

“It feels vulnerable…we’ll need to be extra vigilant” Dew stated, scanning around carefully as she slowed her pace down a bit to a more relaxed trot.

“At some point we are going to have to stop being so careful, Dew…careful is slow. We don’t even know how much time I ha-”

“Stop! Okay don’t say that.” Dew would stop in her tracks, causing Squirrel to almost bump into her.
“Stop saying you don’t know how much time you have left, alright? You are going to be fine. Look at where we are…we might be close to getting out of here. And then…”

“.......” Squirrel stayed silent, knowing that anything she could say would just make things worse. She knew deep down that there was a high chance she wouldn’t make it out alive. She wished she didn’t think that way, but it was so hard not too considering all the circumstances.

“We continue to be safe until we are out of here, okay? I can’t bear it if anything happens..” She would stop herself, shaking her head as she began to keep moving. A failed attempt at regaining her composure. She was easier to read than she would like to admit.

Squirrel just grinned and sped up a bit to be beside her as they ran, giving her a knowing look.
“Don’t distract me, Squirrel!” She huffed a bit, in faux anger as she flicked her tail towards her.

“Who, me? I would never!” She feigned ignorance before chuckling a bit and letting Dew back in the lead.
“Fine though, I’ll pay more attention, alright?”

- -

The open fields in the real world were usually full of bright beautiful flowers. Shades of pinks, blues and yellows were abundant. Small critters and bugs would be in heavy supply there, making the place feel bright and alive. The fields inside this place, however, were vast and empty, with not a single sign of life to be seen. Despite the lack of life, there was a strange and ominous feeling the whole time of being watched.

“I think we should head back, Dew…” Squirrel would cozy up to her as they both slowed their pace, still reading in the opposite direction that they came in at.

“I think the fact that this place feels different means something…”

“Yeah, probably something bad. Like I don’t know…maybe we aren’t supposed to be here?”

“Or it feels like that because we are, and whatever created this place wants to keep us here.”

“You always have such a weird view on the world.”

“Just no reason to speculate…I’m sure we’ll find out one way or another if this was the right move.”

Squirrelpuddle didn’t feel very comforted by that, but decided to brush it off and just stay close to Dew, ear perked and listening for anything- not there had been any other noises for awhile.

“When we get out of here…how much time do you think will have passed?”

“Hm…good question…maybe a few hours? I’m not sure…this is the longest I've been in here.”

“Hm..” Squirrelpuddle thought for a moment on that, wondering what exactly would happen to them if they did get out. Would they go back to how they were a year ago? Would they be the same as they are now?

“So we haven’t eaten or slept in what…a year almost?”

“Don’t think too hard on it” Dew started, cutting her train of thought off.

“Just saying I’m going to be starvinggggg.” She drew it out, looking towards Dew.
“We’ll have to get something special to treat ourselves. I know the perfect places to hunt to get the best prey. Somewhere secret.” She winked, causing Dew to get a bit flustered and almost miss a step while walking.

“Anyways I’m sure its going to be weird…my biggest thing is telling everyone that you are no longer with Ianthe and that you are fine to stay with us.”

“Wait, what?”

“Yeah. It’ll probably be hard for them to understand at first but..I’m well respected. I’m sure I can convince them.”

“No I mean…wait. What do you mean to live with you?” She stopped fully in her tracks, turning towards Squirrel with a bit of a puzzle expression on her face.

“I have no intention of staying in the barrier…” she started, causing Squirrelpuddle to look a little confused.

“I don’t understand…you mean to go back to Ianthe?”

“well….no…I don’t know. It’s complicated, alright?”

“After all this you mean to tell me you’d even consider it?” Squirrel asked, sounding a bit hurt and a bit angry.

“I just…I have a lot of loose ends I need to tie up, and I can’t just abandon everyone under Ianthe either. I have friends, I have family. It’s not like it was just me and her.”

“I guess I just thought…I don’t know. That you were done with all that.”

“I am but I just…I can’t abandon those people, I care about them.”

“I thought you cared about me.”

“I…”

A twig snapped, somewhere in the distance, causing the two of them to immediately go on high alert. It was the first sound besides their two voices that they had heard in hours. The tree line was far enough away that they were surprised they even heard anything at all. They looked at one another before looking towards the treeline on the opposite side from where the noise was.

They both knew what to do, and without even checking in with one another, they booked it for the treeline, not daring to look back to where the noise came from.
Squirrelpuddle was quick, but Dew was quicker. Dew quickly got ahead of the green molly and descended into the brush, running quickly into the forest. Once she was deep inside where she deemed herself hidden enough she turned around and expected to see Squirrelpuddle right behind her. She was not.

Panic settled in for a moment before she finally caught a glimpse of green fur emerging from the brush in front of her. The feeling slowly went back to panic though as she saw her limping, the darkened marks around her eyes spreading, quickly, to the rest of her body.
“Run!” Was the first words out of her mouth as she shuffled past Dew, trying her best to be quick and failing horribly.

Dew ran up beside her and supported her as best she could. She had a determined look on her face as she pulled Squirrel’s body along picking the pace up as the two of them ran through the trees, trying to find somewhere where they could sit and hide. A deep, dark roar could be heard from where they came from, and a form pacing back and forth, before running off in another direction could be heard. Dew kept them moving for a while, feeling Squirrelpuddles body grow more and more limp as she did her best to keep her up.

“What the hell was that?” Dew asked in a hushed whisper, assuming that Squirrelpuddle had seen it.

“I don’t know…it was so dark…like a blur.” She choked out as Dew finally laid her down on the ground in between some bushes so they were well hidden.

“So not an outsider? What the hell…iv’e never heard of anything like that in here ... .those fields must be its home. I’m so sorry, Squirrel…” She started to panic ramble, causing Squirrel to put a paw over her mouth, shushing her.

“You didn’t know..its fine…its alright” She tried her best to calm her down, but her voice was also shaking. She was terrified, and now also injured. She knew her paw had gotten twisted while panicking to get away from the beast, but she was unaware of the quickly spreading black marks on her body until she saw them slink up her paw.

“What the hell…” she went to look at them and Dew looked at her, now almost fully covered by them.

“How do you feel? Are you okay? T-the marks they are…they are everywhere now…Please tell me you feel okay?” Dew panicked, pushing her head into Squirrels, her eyes closing as she silently wished for her to be okay.

“I…I feel fine. Despite my paw…I don’t feel any different” She stated, and for a moment she did feel fine. She didn’t feel any different than she had moments ago.

But then something struck her, deep and cold- right in her heart. She flinched a little- watching as Dew pulled back to look at her worrying. She convinced her it was just her paw, so Dew held it gently with her own on top. Dew lay beside Squirrel, her tail wrapping around her own as she tried to comfort her. Squirrel felt a tinge in her heart this time- not because of the pain from the black mark- but a new kind of pain. A pain knowing she was not going to make it this time. A pain knowing that she was going to leave everyone she cared about behind. Her siblings, her best friend, her apprentice…everyone at the camp, even Dew. She was going to leave them all behind.

“Dew..” she started, her voice a little weak as she used the last bit of her energy to talk to her.
“I couldn’t bear losing you either.” she laid her head on their paws, closing her eyes as she let the darkness take her. Her breathing began to slow down quite noticeably and Dew caught this.

“Squirrel…?” She panicked a little, going to move but Squirrel held tight to her paw with her own.

“No…hey, no…don’t do this to me…c’mon get up.” She looked down at her, half wanting to get up and shake her and the other half just wanting to sit there and be next to her as she wished.

“We were supposed to get out together, Squirrel…c’mon please…wake up.”

But she was already gone- And Dew sobbed over her body, knowing it to be true.

The soggy surface squelched beneath a careless marching, fresh pawprints now dotting the verdun-umber mud. Each step further from his pestering parents aided in easing the tension along the braided tom's shoulders. The weight of their expectation rolling off carnelian fur, freeing him of the effort of forcing a polite facade. Why couldn't they just accept him? Why did they have to expect so much? The questions swarmed the young tom's mind, only furthering his frustration- whether for his parents or himself, he wasn't so certain.

As light paws wandered aimlessly, an acrid odor struck Temptation's senses, bringing his wandering to an abrupt halt. The tom glanced around, pink nose wrinkling in disgust as he searched for the source of the spoiled smell. It didn't take long to locate the origin; a pile of rotten eggs, cracked and shattered into revolting pieces. Near the jumble of vile eggs laid the lifeless body of a big lizard, seemingly freshly killed by something larger, and more dangerous. (+4FP big lizard)

"What happened here?" the young cat murmured to himself, stepping away from the sight. With parted jaws, the putrid scent landed atop his tongue. It took all of his strength not to recoil from the odor, but there was something else hidden beneath the reek. A faint yet familiar whiff drifting upon the sodden air. (A predator (crocodile) has been scented! Does your patrol choose to pursue or ignore the predator?)

    SHADOWHATCH CLAN !!
xbutter dragon archive butter dragon's last post

the aroma of pecans, cinnamon and wild apples spiced the breeze, lilting in the space between him and the forest stranger. and as those stardust eyes drifted to favor’s and fluttered shut with an easy wink, he couldn’t help but grin.

“how ‘bout i show you where i’ve searched so far?” there was a knowing in the twitch of their smile, a confident, rugged feel to how fennel held themself—the mark of someone who knew their place in the ŕealms with all its schemes, adventures, sharp turns and sidetracks. “it looks like your friends need time to rest, no? we won’t go far.”

and so he wandered alongside the forest stranger. wandered amidst silver-green pines and sun-burnished spruces with the squish of moss underfoot and a capricious spirit-wind tangling birdsong and sweet berries, wildflower petals and magpie feathers into both their curls. (+1 dried oak leaves, +1 hawkweed)

“... i’m telling you. my friend is the best chef.” their well of stories never seemed to run dry, a vessel that poured a lifetime of laughter and lessons into a few lilting syllables and a string of words. “wren's always experimenting with new dishes. stars, you remember that story i told you? the one where i traded her recipe of wild roast and berry stew to a pirate in-exchange for the keys to the brig? that was her cooking that saved me from moons locked up on that ship.” their grin held the warmth of a summer sun. “hold on, i think i have a sample right here—not quite stew, but some sun-dried and salted jerky. you should try it!” (+1fp scraps, +1fp scraps, +1fp scraps, +1fp scraps)

fennel smoothed the wind-burned leather of their satchel closed. “last i remember she was trying to fry eggs on hot stones. they always got stuck—”

“hot stones? you mean like stones left out in the sun?” favor's pace faded to a standstill. “like those stones over there?”

smooth river stones fitted into a loose ring shone, near incandescent, under strokes of daylight. and between seam of rocks, the coils of a sun-bathing creature undulated, shimmering black scales shot through with ribbons of gold. a garter snake. at his approach, the serpent slipped over the river stones and through the sea of wild grass, like a culprit fleeing the scene of a crime.

oh. oh no.” for he saw her, then. a chef who had leapt from the whispered pages of story into the real living breathing world as a still, crumpled form. he could see her wilted curls of faun and snow, a sprig of parsley behind her ear, and an overturned basket of bird eggs by her side. he could imagine how it went down. a chef out to try something new, a ravenous snake after an easy snack, a tangle between two forces ending in a snake bite. and yet, her chest still moved—a light, easy cadence. what in the…

“garter snake!” warmth dotted his cheeks and he chewed on his lower lip. “sorry, it’s… she’ll be okay. i’ve seen them during my hunts. they're not poisonous.”

the dove-ash hue to fennel’s features waned, but the once easy lilt to their voice had become a husky rasp. “can you help her?”

the patrol has found fennel's friend (wren)! however, she's been bitten by a snake and requires three herbs (any type) to heal. does the patrol help fennel's friend or continue on their way?

“why hello. didn’t think we’d see anyone ‘round here.” the rogue leader’s blackened teeth pull back in a crooked smile, one that didn’t quite reach his slitted eyes. and on a silent signal, the band pounce: -15% health for blacktoe! he may continue patrolling without rest.

despite their rocky start, the pair drives the band of rogues out and picks up a few stolen goodies from them too: the rogues have retreated and also dropped some items, +3fp perch, +1 ragwort, +1 burdock root, +1 burdock root, +1 common edit from wahoo's task #1

however, one lone rogue lurks outside the border, tail slicing like a whip through the crisp autumn air. it seems that he isn’t quite ready to leave his prize behind: round two of rogues! swathed in twists of shadows, a rogue waits (not trespassing). does the patrol chase him off or leave him be?

explore writing (optional): Sitting with his tail wrapped around his paws, Hawkfire was looking for something to do. His eyes landed on the prey pile on the other side of camp. or... more like bug pile.
I am not eating that, he thought, flicking his ears back. It was only a moment later that Wildfire's bright reddish coat caught his eye.

Standing, he called out to get her attention as he leapt over to her. “Wildfire, it’s time for your training” he said, turning to make his way toward the camp entrance. Wildfire followed after him. “Whatever it is, I’m totally gonna win,” she stated.

Hawkfire rolled his eyes. “Yeah, sure. We’re going hunting.”

Wildfire stopped, standing defiantly. “But we did that yesterday. And the day before. Don’t you have anything new?”
Hawkfire sighed. “Most of our prey is bugs. And I’m not exactly thrilled to be eating them. Besides, it’s almost leafbare, and we need to stock up on prey. Now, come on.”

He gestured with his tail, and wildfire hesitantly chose to continue on through the entrance tunnel. When they stepped out the other side, wildfire said “I bet I already know all that stuff anyway.”

“Well, you can always become even more awesome with practice, I can too,” Hawkfire answered. “I’ll tell you what,” he said more playfully, “we’ll make this a competition, no teaching. And whoever catches the most prey chooses what we do next. Deal?”

Wildfire’s eyes lit up. “You’re on!” she replied excitedly, jumping ahead of him. “There’s no way you’re gonna win!”

Maybe you could learn to have more focus in non competitive situations, Hawkfire thought with an amused purr. He paid attention to everything around them as they walked. The soil under their paws, the birds in the trees, too high up to bother with and definitely aware of their presence, the dappled light through the trees, the smell of pine, the crisp air, the breeze in his whiskers.

They stepped out of the forest and into the open valley, grass replacing soil, now golden yellow from leaf-fall, matching with the golden aspen trees around the river. all brightened by the sunlight, the color only broken by the pine trees bordering the sides of the valley.

They made their way to the top of a hill with a good view over the whole valley to plan hunting locations. But when they reached the top, Hawkfire stopped short.

He had caught the scent of something. And it wasn’t prey.

It was a cat. But it wasn’t any cat from BlizzardClan or any of the various loners they were familiar with.

    “Change of plans. Stay close.”

George shed a singular tear like the crying face emoji at his bush-inflicted wound. This was so sad and tragic for him. How could this happen. He pulls some magic herbs and food out of his cartoon back pocket to recover.
