☆ explore writing:


A loud grunt and crash of dirt ricochets through your ears, the smashing of autumn leaves and thuds of paws against cold dirt.

“Get back here!” A sharp screech echoes, bright orange and auburn fur crashing through low hanging branches and hurdling over rocks. The feline's bright wings arching and snapping open and closed as they weaved through obstacles, their dual colored eyes sharp on their fleeing opponent.

The other feline let out a barking laugh, “You're getting slow there Albatross! Might want to hurry up if you want to catch even one of my molting feathers!” They taunt, flicking their bushy tail out in a playful way and they glanced back with a sharp smirk before twisting back to jolt and break from their flat run to push themself sharply upwards and slam their claws into the soft treebark of one of the havensent willows.

Albatross snarled as he overshot and spun on his paws to launch upwards after the other feline, “Knock it off Oriens, this is your last warning!” He screeched, claws snapping and clunking against the bark as he almost smacked the tree with each push upwards towards the nest of branches.

Oriens peered over, bright amber eyes bright with mirth. “Where's the fun in that!” He chirped before turning and bolting towards a break in the branches, tail flicking wildly behind him as he launched from the hanging leaves and reached his paws out with a sharp yelp as he went sliding down a few thin hanging branches of twirling leaves before pulling himself up with a loud laugh as Albatross halted from the tree behind him.

Oriens turned when he finally reached a sturdy bunch of branches and smiled towards Albatross through the cascade of now swaying leaves and smirked at the look of worry and anger on the other tabbies face, his head wings flicking in amusement.

“What! Cat got your tongue or you can't make the jump?” Oriens shouted over a purr of mirth in his voice as Albatross’ expression changed back to pure annoyance.

The smaller feline hissed before yelling at him, “Just surprised you're apparently this much of a maniac! Jumping that far, you really have no sense of self-preservation!” With this Albatross turned and bolted down the tree, leaving Oriens to watch as the other bright fur disappeared into the bright autumn leaf-litter with a tilted head.

“Well, he’s just a ball of joy isn’t he.” Oriens mused out loud before smiling and trotting towards the trunk of the tree to leap down and follow after the annoyed feline, it was the most fun he’d had in eons.

He wasn't sure what was real anymore. Was there something next to him, was he alone, was Stormbranch with him, were his littermates real, was anything real... was the clan even real anymore? Really, what is reality anyway other than a series of perceptions we think we see, even if we can't see them.

No, don't do this, you can't spiral right now, wake up wake up wake up wake up -

The world kept spinning, images flashing past in his brain. Was he asleep? Was he awake? He had never felt this terrible before. Was he even feeling anything at all? Was that Stormbranch, cutting into his auditory perceptions? Was it the wind? Was there an earthquake, sending him down into the earth? Was there a storm in the sky, sending waves of splintering pain through his head, booming thunder making him feel like he was surrounded by falling boulders?

No, nothing was real except Stormbranch, his strong muscles carrying you home. Stop thinking about things happening around you, they aren't real -

Except this was reality now. If it wasn't real, why was he experiencing it at all? Why why why why why -

And then suddenly, he could feel nothing at all.

The voices sounded like they were underwater, but they were voices. He felt the icy fear grip his heart, fearing that he wouldn't be able to hear right again, that the thunder or the earthquakes or whatever he felt would come back. So he didn't move. He kept impossibly still, letting the voices become clearer, his mind no longer wandering to strange places, no longer seeing things that weren't there - or maybe trying to unsee what was there, he still wasn't sure - and he let himself comprehend what had happened.

"...he seemed to be in shock," the soft voice of Leaf drifted into Atlasdash's ears. Good. He could hear individual voices after all. "But I think the poison is almost fully gone now. He just needs rest."

A soft sigh of relief from another cat, though the other didn't say anything. A soft scuffling of feet made Atlasdash realize that Leaf must have left, though the second pair of paws seemed to remain, a soft paw scraping through the dust, stirring up the soft smell of earth. It was nice to smell the earth again, to let his senses slowly come back.

In the silence, Atlasdash found himself orienting himself more. Wiggling an ear, flicking a paw ever so slightly, twitching just the very tip of his tail. One by one, body part by body part, Atlasdash let himself regain control, letting himself realize that nothing was lost. He was still here. He was still alive. He was back in reality, seemingly with no lasting effects of whatever those cats had given him.

Atlasdash breathed in deeply, steadying himself to open his eyes, hoping that everything was normal. When he did, he found himself looking into the concerned gaze of Stormbranch. The pair regarded each other almost sheepishly for a few moments, neither really sure what they could even say to break the silence. Atlasdash opened his mouth several times, feeling self-conscious, unsure, the anxiety from the attack still rattling him on the inside.

"How are you feeling?" Stormbranch finally asked, standing and nudging a water-soaked moss over, which Atlasdash lapped at graciously. He never knew how good water could taste.

"Like I got hit by lightning," Atlasdash said hoarsely, shaking his head slightly. "But nothing hurts anymore. And you look like you, and the world looks normal again, so honestly, I can't complain too much now," he said with light amusement, trying to keep the tension from returning. "I think I just want to sleep for a few moons."

Stormbranch smiled lightly, shaking his head in return. "I can't blame you. You had me worried for a moment, but Leaf said the poison is gone. You've earned a break, trust me. Others can handle the outer patrols for a while, and you can ease back into things - when you're ready, of course."

Atlasdash gave a quick nod, already feeling stir crazy at the thought of not going out. "I'd love to take a small outing, or at least a walk. Am I allowed to?" At Stormbranch's nod, and offer to come with, the pair made their way slowly from the healer's den, thankful that it was midday and the other patrols were out and about. Atlasdash could avoid the concerned looks and nervous glances, at least for now.

The forest remained unchanged. Time moved on while he was sleeping off his poison and letting his body heal, even if it felt like Atlasdash lost so much in a short amount of time. He was thankful that everything was still the same. The birdsong still echoed around the larger trees, the stream still gurgled along, and the bugs still scratched at the oak tree bark.

And Atlasdash had a new sense of clarity and a sense of protection - Stormbranch. The pair's reconciliation was going strong, something that Atlasdash knew he would never take for granted again. Each day, as Atlasdash quickly regained his strength, no matter what he had done that day - Stormbranch would walk with Atlasdash through the inner parts of the territory. Sometimes they would walk in silence, sometimes they would talk; but mostly, Atlasdash and Stormbranch had each other's company, and that was enough.

The moon passed without incident, and Atlasdash felt rejuvenated through his rest, asking Stormbranch to let him on true patrols again and again. His father still hesitated, both Leaf and Stormbranch not wanting to risk any negative effects from hurting Atlasdash while further out on patrols. But slowly, perhaps too slowly, he finally convinced them both that he was ready to finally do normal duties.

Back out on patrol, even if he was under the watchful eyes of Stormbranch for the first time, Atlasdash knew he would come back stronger than ever. Nothing would keep him down, not the rogues, not the poison - in fact, he would prove that he was a force to be reckoned with, for now he had another force to drive him forward.

Revenge.

Heatherbreeze lay in the sun lazily, nearly ready to sleep when prodded by a gentle paw. She looks up to see River gazing at her with their wide, shimmering eyes.
"Mother, I require walkies."
Heatherbreeze stares at him in confusion. "Wh-what? Walkies??"
"Walkies," he says matter-of-factly.
Heatherbreeze sighs and stands up. "Ok, fine. Walkies. Whatever that means."

And so the two go for walkies into the forest.
"Mother," River begins. "You are very dead-leaf colored, you know. But me? I am the leaves that fall into water this season."
